So my gf and I are planning our first ever trip to Hawaii this spring. We are planning to stay on Maui. Never having been there, if anyone has any good tips for that island, I would love to hear them.

More specifically, we are thinking about booking a room at the Andaz resort in Wailea. Anyone stayed there?

Finally, I would like to hike Halekala, but I don't really want to rent a car. Does anyone know if there are organized tours of Halekala from Wailea? Thanks

  • What is this "slot tournament" you speak of?
Haven't been to Maui (yet!), but have heard great things about the Maui Revealed guidebook (check your local library). I found their Oahu guidebook useful for a previous trip.

Thanks. I will look it up

Lahaina is a fine town, good sea side restaurants. If you do the road to Hana stop and swim in the pools at the bottom of waterfalls and hike along the way. It's the journey, there's not much at the end of the road. However the black sand beach just outside of Hana was kinda cool. Also the views from the top of mountain on the island by the observatory above the clouds is amazing. You can take a early morning bus ride to the observatory watch the sun rise then bike down the mountain, there are tours that's offer that service.

We took a tour of a lava tube just outside of Hana. I kinda wanted to go up and photograph the sunrise on the mountain but nobody wanted to get up that early to go with me.

Hmmm, not having a car in the islands? I'd rethink that. I can think of few places more demanding of a rental.

The Wizard Pub (Maui Revealed and others) guidebooks are great. Not perfect, but great.

Eats: Eskimo Candy in Kihei. Star Noodle in Lahaina. Hali'imaile General Store in Makawao.

Drop me a PM UK to discuss further, if interested.

Thanks. I will check out these guidebooks

I have been to Maui in 2014 and absolutely loved it, particularly the area around Lahaina. I have fond memories of Lahaina.
I agree with ken2v - I'd rethink having no car on Maui.

10 years in a row to Maui, Kaanapali Beach. If you want to Start a Conversation I'll try to help.

The Andaz is an outstanding property. I haven't stayed there personally but my daughter and her family have stayed twice and absolutely love it. Don't think you'll be disappointed...

And yeah... you're gonna need a car to get around.

Have a great time...!!!

I agree with Ken2V that you should rethink the car rental thing. Most resorts will have a rental office on site and you can get one for a couple of days. I think that we've always had a car in Maui and the big island, but not always on Oahu or Lanai if we were going to stay close to the hotel.

I'm sure you can arrange a tour to the crater, but you're stuck to their timeline, so... ;) Dan wants to do one of the tours where you take a bus up and ride bikes down, but I think I'd still take my rental car and meet him at the top if he does that.

There are tours to everywhere. Half day, all day, everything. Rented a car first few times. Haven't rented one the last 7 or 8 times. They are finally redoing the car rental facility at Kahului Airport. It will have an electric tram instead of all those dam shuttles. A dozen rental car companies all in one place.

Another thing... by next spring they will be charging admission to Haleakala... also if you're going to catch the fantastic sunrise and driving up yourself, you may need to make a reservation for a parking spot.
