My wife and I like zoos and we try and visit them when traveling. The list so far:

    Minneapolis
    San Diego
    Seattle
    Dallas
    San Antonio
    Phoenix
    Tampa
    Albuquerque
    Las Vegas-worst of them all.

    Anybody else?

    Las Vegas has a zoo?

It's true. You DO learn something new every day!

We were underwhelmed by San Diego's zoo. We had always heard it was so great, so I am sure our expectations were high. I theorized that it was probably one of the first to do things that lots of zoos do now so they still have the rep of being innovative.

But I like zoos. We went with the kids all the time. I don't know if just my wife and I would go to one on our travels now that the kids are grown.

Zoos and aquariums are always on our list of possibilities when we travel.

Which Seattle one did you visit? Woodland Park is okay but Point Defiance is a "sad zoo" IMO unless it's the holidays and Zoo Lights are happening.

Monterey Bay has the best aquarium we've seen. I was surprisingly impressed with the zoo in New Orleans.

Las Vegas has two, that I know of. The Strip and Fremont Street! If only they had a few cages!
    Good luck. :beer::beer:

Woodland Park because it was an easy bus ride there. Didn't even know about Point Defiance.

    "Zoos," in some guise? Yes.

    Monterey - Aquarium
    Bend - High Desert Museum
Palm Desert - The Living Desert
    Tucson - Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum
    Etc.

By far one of the best - the Bronx Zoo. You should watch The Zoo on Animal Planet Saturday nights.

We love going to zoos! One highlight was the Denver zoo where they had a sea lion who would predict the outcome of football games and would pose like hours favorite player, Tim Tebow haha.

We also went to that crappy Vegas zoo, and it was the worst place we've ever visited. Thankfully, it got shuttered a few years back after the employees walked out

I've gone on occasion - probably the best I've visited was the Nashville Zoo - they had full grown forests but with nets over them so the habitats were just open for the animals (of course w/protection for US).

We tend to hit museums first and usually assume that the local zoo won't be as impressive as the ones in Chicago. But we've had no little ones in the family for awhile. Now that's changed with my niece so zoos will probably become a high priority on vacation.

We are going to Phoenix in May and plan to either visit the Phoenix zoo, or the Wildlife Zoo & Aquarium.
We are from the Seattle area, and try to visit Woodland Park each summer.

I just realized that I have visited a zoo only once, when I was around 6 or 7. Barely remember it and I have no idea which one it was.

Had a great time at the Atlantic City Aquarium. Of all our trips to NYC haven't made it to the Bronx Zoo but it is certainly on our bucket list.

The thing is, a lot of these places some of us are discussing are all about local history. The Living Desert in Palm Desert, and notably the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum in Tucson and High Desert Museum in Bend -- to name some of the more important ones regionally -- are all about the native and natural and human history of areas. It is all interconnected. They might have animals in enclosures, but they aren't zoos. Same with things commonly tagged "botanical gardens."

We didn't make it, but our bartender highly recommended the botanical garden area next door to the Phoenix Zoo.
