I am thinking of staying at the California for the first time. I wanted to know if the east tower room renovations are complete? If not, anyone know approximately when all the rooms will be complete? Are there any other areas that they are updating? Also any insights that I should know about before my first stay?

I cannot give you an update but I was in the East Tower Room 1622 & it was OK,though the view from the room was nothing to write home about as it looked internal between the Towers..though notable that updating could be done..Apart from the air conditioning coming away( see picture) the room was a decent size and clean..This was my 1st stay downtown & I went on to stay at the Paris & to be honest preferred Downtown & Fremont Street to the madness of the main Strip,as there was plenty of security around & felt less threatened than on the Strip which is now a hoard of Party goers.

The buffets at MSS &the Fremont offer amazing value & the SDX stops directly outside the front door with the best deal being that you get a $10 per day off if you "charge to your room"...breakfast at the Fremont cost me around 16c and Dinner at MSS about $10 once I charged to my room and had it taken off..The Hotel / Casino offers a taste of old Vegas and will definitely be back on my next trip....the only downside being they charge for Wi Fi..

Sorry I cannot give you updates on ongoing renovations but hope you enjoy the experience

The SDX is the downtown express right? It stops outside the Cal? Can you elaborate about it and the $10 per day off part?

SDX is the strip and downtown express. Sounds like the $10 was for meals($10 per day- use it daily or lose it) with a special room rate they have a couple times a year. One just ended feb 28. Don't Get Stripped was one special that included $10, Got one a couple years ago for $15 daily til I rated comp rooms

As to the bus stop: front door of Cal equals the door at Ogden and Main, cross Ogden like you are going to the old Las Vegas Club then turn left. There is a bus stop schedule sign. For many years it was not used but appears to be operational again.

I was in March and stayed in the West Tower. The renovated rooms are very nice. I cannot speak to the East Tower

I was at the Cal from March 1 thru March 5, and my cell detected the free wifi on the casino floor (it's called BOYD_GUEST_WIFI and not California-Rooms-Cox which is the $10 per day in room wifi), but the free wifi wasn't working yet. I'll be at the Cal on Monday again and I'll report back if the free wifi is up and running.

Update: The Cal's free wifi in the casino is now up and running according to my friend who works at the Cal.

Interesting. After we checked in to our "suite" in Feb, I inquired if our suite was the only type of suites? I was told yes. Our suite didn't look anything like the one shown. Don't get me wrong, it was a nice room in the west tower, but it didn't have a wet bar, microwave, bathtub, dining table for four etc. It was maybe 1.5 times the size of a normal room.
Only thing I can figure is that we requested a suite with two queens. Maybe that makes a difference?

Looks like the "dump" is getting better. (turn down sound to skip robot voice)

Can you expand on this? In your eyes, what makes it a dump? What would you change to make it not a dump?

LOVE my "dump".....my home away from home. Perfect for me.....wouldn't change a thing about this "dump".

I guess I found the Cal to be old and run down. While it is nice they are renovating it, I feel like the attention to detail in the renovations could be greater. Also I find the casino to be quite smokey and it's clear that the place is old

I agree that the place is old. But I have been at the Cal many times before the renovation and again back at Thanksgiving after most of the casino renovations and I think the old girl looks pretty good! Most, not all, but most of the downtown casinos are in the "old" category and I think that is what brings them the appeal and charm of downtown. Thanks Jidery for responding back!

  • Keeping Our Foothold in South Point...again!
The Cal is still a dump, needs tons of work.

Hah, where is the Dislike/disagree button when you need it?

Jidery, if you don't like the place then don't visit it. Plenty of us like the place and enjoy staying there and don't think the place is a dump.

But thanks for responding and explaining why you don't like the place. Many of us agree that most downtown hotels are old but to tell you the truth, other than the GN and the DTG do you think the other hotels are any better? GG is smallish and has low ceilings and traps the cig smoke. Plaza and El Cortez sends scents into the casino which some people dislike. Binions is just old, as is Fremont (IMHO). Same for 4 queens. I don't like the loud music at the D so I don't play there. And to me MSS is similar to the Cal, except that the Cal has been recently renovated so actually is "brighter" than MSS.
