Recently southwest has released a 5:45 am flight getting to Vegas at 9:15 from my home town and coming home at 6:35. My question is if anyone has ever done such a short little day trip like this having to fly and also would you recommend doing it? This would give us roughly 8 hours to play, drink and shop a little. Need to book ASAP to lock the times in.

Not for me, wherever I visit I like to stay over at least for the night so can relax a bit and not clock watching.

Also not much for flying but even if driving and travelling a couple of hours I like to stay over the night at least.

    Whatever you decide, enjoy.

I'd do it if I had a hankering to go to Vegas and it was a short flight.
Looks like you're based in Texas, so getting in and enjoying yourself for
a while sounds pretty good to me.
I used to do that with the shuttle flights to NY (when I lived in MA) and go to see a
Broadway show matinee, have a nice meal, do a little sightseeing and return in the evening.
I wouldn't recommend it during the holidays...the airports are insanely crazy.
If it's during less than peak-flying times of the year and the price is good for you, go for it and
    have a good time.

Yes it’s on a Tuesday on December 12th so I don’t think it would be to busy. Think I’m going to do it.

I did a 36-hour trip this year over my birthday but I can't imagine having any fun in just 8 hours on the ground. I'd be constantly looking at my watch and worrying about how little time there is. At least over the Bday trip I had a full day sleep to sleep to enjoy. Couldn't see how the cost/benefit ratio would make any sense, but if you're seriously jonesing I guess go for it?

I've done something very close to that timeframe. I wouldn't hesitate to do it again but what is right for me may not be right for you

Yeah, I would do it but I'm always angling for as many days as possible there. I agree, avoid holidays and you should be Ok, just make sure to get to Frankie's while you're there!

I did this last year from MKE to MSP to visit my daughter at college on a Sunday. Spent about 8 hours together, and I was back home in time for Sunday Night Football.

I did take a trip where I was on the ground in Vegas for 25 hours. Would have been 26, but my flight was cancelled and the best they could do left an hour earlier.

I've done a trip where we got in around midnight and left about 25 hours later. With an 8 hour trip, I'd be worried flight would get delayed and make the trip too short.

Haven't most of us done something like this, though it likely involved a romantic connection, prospect, long shot or pipe dream?

About 25 years ago, I went on nearly 3 dozen one day junkets to Atlantic City (and evening trips on weekends). They cost $99, which I often reserved the day before and paid cash at the airport. The charters flew directly into AC (where the closest commercial flights were to Philadelphia) and they supplied ground transportation to Harrah's and Caesars Palace. Most trips left Atlanta around 9 am and I was usually playing around 11. The return trips left the casino around 11 pm, I was usually in bed by 3, and back at work at 8. But at least the flights were relatively short and I had 12 hours in the casino. Making it through the next day was always torturous.

Around that same time, they also offered day trips to Vegas, as you described. I never considered going, but did talk to a several AC travelers that had. They all said that casino time was less than the flights, the trip was way too grueling, and they'd never do it again. Personally, they'd have to pay me more than the cost of the trip to get me to go! Still, it might be worth it once just for bragging rights! Let us know how it was if you go.

Wasn’t there a thread on here a while back about forcing a connection through mccarron with a long enough layover to zip to the strip for the better part of the day ? That might work if I was heading to Arizona or California for something different.

My nephew worked for air canada in his early 20’s. He and his buddies used to do stupid stuff like fly to London for a coffee, a night in Tokyo etc. ah To be 21 again....

I did something similar when in Vegas once. Booked a day return flight to San Francisco. It was a bit of a quick visit, got there about 11am and left about 9pm. I was coming back from Vegas once and sat next to a guy who was on his way back from a weekend in Vegas from the UK
Apparently his mate invited him out to Vegas for a party. He flew out on the Friday then flew back to the UK on Sunday

my own rule of thumb is 3x relaxing time to travel time at a minimum...usually measured in days, but if measure in hours your trip would not qualify. As mentioned above, It's your trip so do what makes you happy

Flight time is one thing, time in the airport and to and fro another. You should do what you want, but that’s way too much flight and airport time for too little Vegas time for me. No, no, no.

Hell, I think our five day trips are too short. We have a 2 hour 45 minute flight from Texas, but it sucks up a half day or more of travel. We get up at 4:30 AM to be able to be eating lunch in Las Vegas, and we leave the hotel around lunch time to finally get home from the airport at around 8:30 PM. No short trips for us. I’m too old for a quicky.

This is a good point. I had a flight in August that was supposed to leave at 7:30 in the evening that didn't leave until after 11pm. You're putting an awful lot of faith in the airlines with only 8-9 hours on the ground.
