    My Trip Report

    Background

I am 68 years old and have been going to vegas twice a year for years. A year and a half ago I had a real stroke, but it didn't affect me too much. Just a temporary loss of memory. I woke up that morning and went to take a shower. The radio dj said it was tuesday morning. I went back to bed. My wife, (the saint because she has put up with me for 48 years) asked why I was coming back to bed. I told her it was my day off, so I was going to sleep in for another hour. She told me I had traded days off because my son-in-law was having a spinal operation.I replied "no shit, which one?" She knew something was wrong. She kept asking me questions that I couldn't answer. Finally, after about 20 minutes of questioning me,she asked me "who is president of the United States?" I replied "Obama, but don't blame me, I didn't vote for him." Anyway, after a few hopital trips I'm ok.

The reason for that story is that she wouldn't let me go to Vegas with the son-in laws because she said I could bs them if it happened again, but she would know. And she wasn't going to Vegas any time soon. Finally I talked her into going so the planning began.

Since I had been boycotting Harrahs and MGM props ( for their horrible bj rules) we couldn't stay for free there. And my Tropicana offers had been reduced because of my absence. The girls didn't want to stay downtown. I could still stay for free, but S-I-L couldn't because of only playing there one time. I reluctantly searched total rewards website and lo and behold I could stay at Harrah's Sat through tuesday comped. I probably have only given them 2 hours play in 4 years, so I was amazed. Only had to pay the resort fee. Grrrr.

We all like playing at the Trop and were dissapointed s-i-l couldn't get comped. I called my host, but he was out on medical leave. I finally called and talked to a host on duty. I explained my absence and asked them to review my play and also my s-i-l 's play from the one time he had played there. SCORE! two rooms comped coming in on a saturday nite!
    Boy, was that long-winded. Sorry.

    The Trip

Boarded the dogs and finally on the road to Indy at 10 am. Flight on Southwest was uneventful. Changed planes in Kansa City and arrived in Vegas about 4:45 about 10 minutes early. Decided to cab it this trip because I just didn't want the responsibility of renting a car. About half way to the Trop, some idiot was on the side of the road decided he wanted to be where we were sideswiped the cab. Everyone ok, but had to change cabs. I left my statement on what happened and then off to the Trop.

Checked in and got a second floor room at the Paradise tower. More on that later, but relegated because I smoke (repeatedly and often I might add.) Room was clean and neat. Requested a fridge and coffee maker, no problem.

Settled in and unpacked and then off to see the Dan Band at Mandaly Bay via the tram. (Thanks my vegas!)
Got the tickets and proceeded to the venue. Security has you empty your pockets and wands you before you can enter. It was worse than tsa at the airport. Got to the bar and ordered drinks and waited for the band. About 45 minutes later some local musician/comedian tries to entertain the crowd. The Dan Band was still on route. Finally at 9 pm and still no Dan Band, we decided to leave. My daughter and S-I-L had texted that they had arrived and we were all hungry. My wife hadn't eaten all day and I only had a hot dog at the airport.
It was 11 pm our time. We left and met up. I don't know if the band ever showed up, but was dissapointed.

We decided on the Shake Shack for dinner. We had heard good things about it. On guy's trips, the over-under for In-and-Out burger is always 2. This trip we were going to compare the two. Really liked the burger, maybe better than InOut. We walked around the Park and checked it out. My wife said that she just got wet and I replied that it is raining. Look up. She said it isn't raining. I insisted that it was raining, but only in spots.
sil said there were misters that were cooling people off. I asked him what these magical machines were that could make it rain in spots. As we left, I remarked that it was odd that it was only raining in spots at the Park, must be bad juju at the Park, we must stay away. (And now you can see why my wife says I could bs them, but she would know.)

Walked back to the Trop and checked things out. We all decided to go to bed and hit it in the morning. It was 3 am our time and we were bushed. We had already agreed not to play with the saturday nite crowd because it could be bad for the bankroll. As a side note, while I didn't try the $20 trick because neither the wife or I care about the room as long as it is clean, sil did try. The gal tried to get them in a sky suite, but everything was sold out. She apologized profusely. She did send up champagne and chocolate covered strawberries and gave them a $50 food credit.

Day 2 started at 6am. Down to the tables where sil was already playing bj. He was sitting at 3rd base so I took 1st base. Bought in for $300. Just the 2 of us. Cards went back and forth, nothing remarkable.
We both play the same way. Pull the chips then on second win, double the bet, then pull, double etc. We have memorized the wizard of odds basic strategy and brushed up playing the blackjack trainer for hundreds of hands. The girls came down and we were off to the Gospel Brunch at the House of Blues.

Went to the gift shop to get the comp and then to the box office to buy the tickets. Buy one get one thanks to My Vegas. While the show isn't my cup of tea, this was for my wife (the saint.) She wanted to see the show, so we did. It was entertaining for a while, and I was surprised that the food was good. I started out with a free bloody mary (My Vegas) and a caesar salad, house salad and peel and eat shrimp. The cocktail sauce was outstanding. Next was biscuits and gravy, roasted potatoes, bacon, more bacon, and finally some bacon. Back to the food line again for chicken and waffles and shrimp. If you're wondering about the diet and my stroke, on my last visit to the doctor when asked how the diet was coming, I told him I've been eating midwestern and southern food my whole life, and that probably wasn't going to change. When asked about smoking he got the same reply. He thanked me for my honesty ;)

Back to the Trop via the tram. Backtraking, the nite before we had taken the express tram. For some reason, the express wasn' running Sunday. When we took the tram to Mandalay Bay, I thought it stopped at the Luxor' but is was MB. I told them to stay on the tram, it was the next stop. Nope. Back to the Excal. Then back to MB. I then explained that it was a secret shortcut that would open up a magical way to the brunch. On the way back I told them not to get off at the stop that there was one more to Excal.Nope. Back to MB. the regular tram must have different stops than the express. I explained by doing the ride twice, it opened up the magical walkway to the oasis out of the desert known as the Trop. Again, you know why the saint insisted on coming.

Back at the Trop, sil and I played bj while girls went to the slots. The table was choppy, hardly ever able to win when upping to 2 units. Lost most of my $300 buy in. We decided to rest before going to the Linq. Wife and I napped while daughter and sil went to the pool. (The nap was uneventful;)

After showering, we met up in the casino. Played a little while with the same results (see a trend here?) We then headed to MGM to get tickets to the Monorail. Buy one get one 2 day pass compliments of MV. Took the monorail over to Harrah's walked across the street to TI. Decided we were hungry, and since my wife turned up her nose at InOut, decided on Peppermill. I had the BLT with avocado, while she had the Salmon.
I loved my meal, she did not like hers. She did like the onion rings however.

Ubered back to TI. The girls went to the slots and we proceeded to the best bj rules in Vegas at lower levels.
At TI, insurance is allowed, double after splits, resplit aces (no hit after split). The only downside is dealer h s17. The bj geeks know what I'm talking about. Proceeded to a good session, hitting couple of $75 bets, losing at $100. (Instead of pull and double, I elected to go $15, 25, 50 etc.) My daughter won at slots while DW lost. Ubered back to the Trop and called it a nite 4:30 am our time.

This is taking more time than I thought. More later including downtown, Aria and Orleans.

Ok, forgot one incident at TI that would become promminet for the rest of the trip. While sitting at the bj table an asian person sat down at our table and bought in. I thought he was a baby-faced man. Had on a hat and was somewhat timid. While we were playing he kept muttering "booshie" (bullshit) and "dealer break" among other things. The problem was he expected the dealer to break on 19, so wouldn't hit. Other times would hit and bust when the dealer had a bust card up. "booshie" As I looked at him a little bit I thought he might be a she. I really couldn't tell. Kind of like Pat on SNL. Now I was leaning to female. At one point when I lit up a cigarette, she said "excuse me young man, I don't smoke at home, but would you give me a cigarette?" I obliged. A little while later, as I lit up I asked if she would like another. She would. After another 1/2 hour sil and I colored up. After cashing at the cage I ran into her again. I gave her another cigarette for the road. She smiled broadly and said "high five." Her hand was down by her waist. I gave her five and told her that wasn't high five and held my hand up high. She then gave me a high five and we were on our way.

Hey, that's one thing I forgot to add to my Category 3 items (do if I have the opportunity) "Spot the Hooker!!" Of course, that'll be easy one of the nights because . . . . .

I'm not sure if he's dead--or if the final episode scared him away!

Ok left out hooker sightings. Several younger ones at MB and one classy one. Wife asked how I knew. I said it was hard because several younger girls dress like that anyway, but maybe it's the eye contact and they seem to be searching. NYNY had several younger ones that appeared to be "learning the ropes." The Trop had only a couple, and they were fairly obvious.

Monday morning began with a text to SIL, "Booshie." Went down to the tables and no SIL. Described him to the dealer and he hadn't seen him. Outside to smoke. When I came in, SIL was at the table. He was freaked out that the dealer knew his name and told him I went outside.

This session was up and down. After getting to $30, I finally got a hand that you play for. Pair of 7's vs. a 2. Split. Another 7. SplitIn the meantime. A 3, Double. A 10, stay. Another 7, split. A 5, hit. And finally, a 4, double. Dealer didn't break, but I won 3 of 4 hands, including both doubles. Went up to $60 and won 2 hands, up to $75 and lost. Decided to color up a winner. SIL didn't have a good session and continued to play a little more.

In the meantime, I wandered over to the Skechers store and stopped at ABC for coke and water. Noticed 2 attractive black hookers (not together) on the way. Went back to the Trop and SIL was still playing. I told him he was in trouble with Mom. He was supposed to watch me to make sure I wasn't stroking out. I told him I had fallen down twice, was mugged and had shit myself. He replied "I'll furnish the tissue."

Speaking of mugged, a young man had turned 21 on Saturday, and was plastered. SIL had gone down early am to play and tried to get him to stop, to no avail. He had been befriended at the table by another young man, and they left together. Minutes later after I had come down, he walks in witha black eye and had been mugged by his new :friend." This was in broad daylight.

Lunchtime! Call me anything you want, just don't call me late for dinner! We rounded up the girls and headed to Aria ( My Vegas) I started out with the crab legs (of course) and a tomato salad. I intended on going back for more, but there were a lot of good-looking options. Chips and habanero salsa, a reddish-orange shrimp and potato dish, and chicken gumbo. Back at the table, SIL also tried the red/orange shrimp. He was on fire. Said his upper lip was numb. My daughter got him some ice cream and all was better. LOL. I tried the dish and found it quite good. It was hot, but not 10 alarm hot. I did not like the gumbo for some reason. Back to the line for some beef pho. Found out it was not pronounced phO, phU asin pho you. Also had mussels in sauce. very tasty. Wound up with carmel corn for dessert.

We strolled back to the Trop, played a short session (small win,) and decided for naps.Tonite we were going downtown.

So I go back down to the casino and SIL is on a monster run. Bet up to 160 with a double down hand. No booshie! Win. Up to $320. Won. $320 again. Double.Lost. Booshie. Cashed out with a sizeable win.

Girls come down and we take the monorail to SLS. Walk through (yawn) and head to Lucky Dragon. There were a few gamblers there, mostly but not all asian. Took pics of the dragon, then ubered downtown. Walked into the Plaza. What tables were open were full. Decided to get something to eat.

I had read good things about Triple George and Pizza Rock, so we headed in that direction. Wife was questioning my choice as in her eyes I had bombed at the Peppermill. (Go figure.) Triple George was not busy, so in we went. Nice atmosphere, cool, and water!

Upon arrival, the person who seated us told us our waitress was stuck in traffic, and would be there in thirty minutes. No sooner than that came out of his mouth, there was Brenda, our waitress. Little did we know, she was quite possibly the best waitress in the world! She was attentive without being intrusive. As dinner went on, she waited to fill my iced tea until I was empty. She told me that when I put sugar in my tea, she didn't want to throw off the ratio. I don't know how many times I didn't want my tea refilled because I had it the way I liked it. Brenda was the first waitress ever to understand that without me saying a word. Wife had swordfish and I had Shrimp Primevera. Mine was excellent, and the wife said it was the best swordfish she had ever had. cooked perfectly and moist.(Keep in mind we are from the midwest so tifwiw.) Triple George will be on our must do list from now on, and we will be sure to ask for Brenda.

Back to gambling. We walk through Fremont, all tables are full. Out on the street a show is starting. We walk by two guys liting up and passing a toke. Smelled like skunkweed! I was dissapointed that I couldn't showWife the banana hammock man. He was a no-show. Finally we get to GG. To the "high limit" room we go. It had been berry berry good to us last year, so we were anxious to try it again. SIL sat at 3rd base and I was at 1st. We played 3 dd shoes. Got my bet up to $100 a couple of times and scored a dd at least once at $100. All in all a good session. Left with a good win. Of course, when the dealer didn't bust, we called Booshie.

To the GN and Uber back to TI.

We find our table at TI and it is back and forth. Get on a little run, then here come the "drive buys." Finally, after several drive buys, the pit boss makes it a %
$50 table, grandfathering us in. End of the drive buys. After a good streak we color up and go to find the girls. Daughter had some wins, Wife........not so much. We paly around a little at slots, and then uber back to the Trop. Back to the room and hit she sack.
