3 day trips aren't my cup of tea, but they are still better than nothing PLUS Taylor returns

    My Trip Report

    Saturday, May 13, 2017

It’s that time again. I get to return to Vegas and this time, Taylor is returning also. On the way to the airport, Taylor told me that since she missed the last trip, she feels like a Vegas virgin all over again. Hopefully, she isn’t carrying around a list of “Must do things for first timers”.

Our flight was for 6:45am so we were able to arrive before the traffic got too nasty with the race traffic in Indy today. Today is the Indy Grand Prix, or whatever it’s called, but traffic won’t pick up for that until around 7-8am. Some of my coworkers will be at the track today working the gates, but I don’t get that fun until next weekend and then again for the Indy 500. The lines at the airport are super short this morning. I parked the car and then Taylor and I were able to check our bag and get through security all within about 10 minutes. Saturday mornings are usually super busy and then it slows down about 8-8:30am and stays pretty slow until about 2pm when it picks back up. Even though the lines were short for us, the rush was about to hit. There was a large group approaching the Delta kiosks when we left the counter and there was a pretty good crowd in Civic Plaza, which is the food court and shopping area before security at IND.

There will be no preflight breakfast for me today, mainly because there is a long line at 96
th Street Steakburgers and they are pretty slow at making food when there is just 1 person in line so I don’t want to wait behind 15 people. If I would have known it was going to be busy, I would have gotten McDonalds out at Civic Plaza, but not going back now. So instead, I stopped at one of the shops inside security and got a bag of bbq chips to munch on. BBQ chips are the breakfast of champions right? lol

Our flight started boarding shortly after we got to the gate and like always, we get on early and I’m quickly served a Miller Lite. Today, we are flying through Salt Lake City. If I can’t fly non-stop, then SLC is my preferred airport to go through. LAX, believe it or not, is my 2
nd[/SIZE] favorite choice. Both approaches are beautiful approaches and it’s usually a short distance between my gates on the flights to Vegas at least. Along with that, LAX has Rockin’ Brew, which is located right next to one of the gates I usually fly out of when going to Vegas. Beers cost $13, but it’s a good atmosphere for an airport place. That’s not important right now though because we’re going through SLC and I’m drinking already.

This trip is a little different than our usual trips to Vegas. For one, it’s just a 3 day trip, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, flying back home on the red-eye on Monday night/Tuesday morning. Also, since it’s a short trip, we are renting a car this time. Taylor rented a car that one time she was here because she was staying for just a few days while I was staying for a week, but this time, it’s for both of us even though she will be the primary driver. I refuse to make promises of sobriety in Vegas. Both flights today went smoothly and we arrived in Vegas a few minutes after 10:30am and by the time we got our bag, it was right at 11am. We walked out the door just as the bus to the rental car center was pulling away so we had to wait a few minutes for the next one. I don’t even know how long we waited. It was probably only 10-15 minutes, but it seemed like forever.

When we rent cars, unless it’s a special occasion, we don’t request anything fancy. This time, we got a 2016 Chevy Malibu, which drove really nice and was perfect for our needs. Since we have a car, we decided to head straight to the Yard House to eat, but we didn’t go to the one there at Linq. Instead, we went to the one at Town Square. I haven’t been to this one since the one on the strip opened and I must say that it looks dead in there compared to the one on the strip. I’m sure that this one isn’t hurting for business, but it is out of the way and not even easy to find once you get to Town Square so more than likely the only people that are coming to this one are the ones that are actually looking for it.

We sat ourselves at the bar and I quickly have a half yard of Miller Lite in front of me. I quick bit of advice for anybody that may go to a Yard House at some point. I was told years ago that you need to sit at the bar here because service is much slower at the tables. I have learned this myself at various Yard House establishments when I’ve been forced to sit at a table during sporting events when the bar is full. So, assuming that everybody in your party is 21+, always sit at the bar at this place. I got my normal and Taylor got some burger with applewood bacon, which smelled amazing and she let me have a bit and it tasted just as good as it smelled.

For this trip, we’re staying at Caesars Palace again so after we eat, we head there to check-in. It’s a little after noon so we should be good now since neither of us have ever had an issue checking in early as long as it’s after the normal check-out time. We had to wait about 20 minutes to get to the counter, but our room was ready. We weren’t very high up on this trip, but we did have a room overlooking the pools.

I was all for skipping the traditional trip to the Stratosphere this trip, but Taylor still wanted to go so we went and got the car and headed to the Stratosphere. Taylor isn’t drinking today so I got my slushy and she found a machine she likes. I’m glad we came here. Neither of us had any luck gambling, but that slushy was so good today.

After leaving the Stratosphere, we headed to Westgate. Even though we’ve driven here before, we still passed up the entrance to the parking lot and had to drive around for a minute to get back to it. I finally had my first bit of luck on this trip and it wasn’t really any luck at all because all it did was limited my losses. I won $80 on a Monopoly machine so instead of being down like $400, I was only down about $320. Taylor isn’t having any luck either, but we are both having fun.

We have never driven to NYNY before so we decided to head their next. I can’t speak for everybody of course, but to me, it feels different arriving at these casinos by driving there than taking a taxi, Uber or Lyft, a bus, or walking. I can’t explain it, but it’s just different. On the way, we did nearly kill somebody that decided to walk across the street by Aria. We did the typical Vegas thing and honked while barely tapping the brakes.

We parked at NYNY and played there for a bit and then walked to the other casinos in the area. Neither of us had any real luck. Each of us had a $160 win, but other than those, it was a losing day for us. We did head back to NYNY and hit Coyote Ugly, where I drank a lot. Vickie and Jen did what they do best and hooked me up with lots of booze. Despite drinking so much, I never really felt drunk today. Don’t get me wrong, I was drunk and definitely couldn’t even consider driving, but I never really felt the alcohol today. Anyway, I’m off to bed now, but there will be more fun tomorrow and hopefully that fun includes some wins.

Taylor and I woke up this morning about 7:45am anf got ready for the day. Our plan today is The Peppermill for breakfast and then do our normal stuff in that area and then see where the rest of the day takes us.

We quickly get ready, get the car, and head to The Peppermill. There is a large group inside waiting to be seated so I thought we were going to be waiting a bit because we couldn’t tell that they were all one group. However, we are seated quickly so we kind of figured out that they were a group waiting to be together. It did take a few minutes for our server to arrive, which is pretty unusual here in my experience, but she was training a new waitress so it’s understandable. I got my normal here and Taylor got one of the omelets, but one that I believe is new for her. She also got a Bloody Mary. Today, she gets to drink and I’m the driver. She’s earned it after having to babysit me all day yesterday.

After finishing our breakfast, we headed over to Circus Circus and no, we didn’t forget the car this time like we did the last time we drove to The Peppermill. Taylor won $225 at Circus Circus while my big win here was $37. Oh well, a small win is better than no win right? I may be mistaken, but I do believe that her $225 win is the largest we’ve ever had at Circus Circus, or at least while we’ve been dating anyway.

We left Circus Circus and took the car back to Caesars because it just makes more sense to walk or use public transportation for where we’re going today, but I still don’t plan to drink just in case we drive later on. We do gamble at Caesars some and my luck finally changes a bit. I hit $330 on a Wizard of Oz machine and then another $110 on Colossal Wizards. Taylor played Top Dollar and hit $125.

Unfortunately, that little spurt of good luck we had at CC and CP wouldn’t last as the rest of the day was basically all losses with the exception of a couple $60 wins for each of us. We hit pretty much all of the CET properties and even a few MGM properties, but had no luck.

We ended up eating dinner at Stripburger and then went to bed fairly early. Taylor got drunk today and was almost passing out at Stripburger. Sorry that today’s is so short, but nothing really exciting happened. Of course, I’d much rather talk about nothing exciting happening in Vegas than anywhere else.

I woke up around 6am today and had no intention of getting up at that time, but I heard Taylor in the shower so decided I might as well get up, When she got out, she apologized for waking me, but she really didn’t do it. Today us our last day in Vegas as our flight home tonight departs at 11:35pm and after a stop in Minneapolis, will arrive back in Indianapolis at about 6:50am tomorrow.

After we both get ready, we head down to the casino to gamble a bit since it’s too early to go to the Wynn for the buffet. It’s been awhile since I’ve been in the casino at Caesars at 7am so I’m surprised at how busy it is. I mean, there’s not like lines or anything like that, but there is a pretty good amount of people here. I play some $1 Quick Hits and after putting $100 in, cash out for $230. That’s would be the only luck we’d have at Caesars today though. We did play several machines, but nothing else good happened.

We go get the car and drive to Wynn. We get there a little later than usual so there’s a bit of a line, but not a problem as the line goes quickly. Mine and Taylor’s first plates today were nearly identical. The only difference was that I got more bacon and she got eggs benedict instead of scrambled eggs. Next up for me was my plate of fruit. I was kinda bummed because there was only a couple chunks of pineapple, but I loaded up on everything else and Taylor got another plate of some good breakfast food, just smaller this time. Then I got a plate of dessert, which consisted of 2 cherry danishes and one of the oreo cookie things in a cup. Taylor ate one of the danishes, which I anticipated so that’s why I got 2 of them, but it was so good that I would have eaten both if she hadn’t had one of them.

After eating, we go to the casino. We each had a little bit of luck here. Nothing like what I’ve had on recent trips, but we both won a little bit. I ended up hitting $200 3 times and $170 another time. Taylor had a $400 win and a $140 win along with several $30-40 wins. So we did well here which is nice considering we’ve been getting our butts kicked this trip. One thing about the Wynn, Taylor and I tend to go back and forth between Wynn and Encore so I never really remember which one I’m in at the time when I’m on a certain machine so that makes it hard for me to find the same machines over and over again here.

We’re heading downtown today because Taylor is going to try to kill me. She purchased tickets for the Zoom-line in advance, which is the higher and longer zip-line. I was just getting used to the little one, but today I die so I won’t be able to tell you all about this adventure. We’re doing that around 1:30-ish so my time of death should definitely be before 1:45.

We get downtown and valet park at El Cortez. It’s my favorite casino downtown and I’ve stayed here a few times. Tony, who has been working there forever, greets me as I walk in. I’m not sure what Tony’s official position is. I’ve seen him parking cars before, but then on the same trip, I’d see him working the bell desk. Maybe the positions are combined at El Cortez or maybe he’s a boss and does a little bit of either one depending on customer demands at the time. This guy always tells me a good Vegas story as long as he has the time so if you stop by El Cortez, stop by the bell desk and see Tony. He’s a short older bald man. He is also a wealth of information so he can probably answer any question you may have. Unfortunately, his vast knowledge of the city doesn’t help me or Taylor win. Taylor did actually win $300 on a Forbidden Dragons machine and then won $80 on Texas Tea. I’m not sure how much I lost, but it was definitely too much.

It’s now time to head to my doom. There is a good and bad thing about going earlier in the day. The lines aren’t nearly as long as they are if you go while the Fremont Street shows are going on. So that part is nice because it takes away some of that waiting in anticipation. Of course, the people that are in line can easily see just how scared somebody is. We’re at the top pretty quickly and before I can object too much, I’m hooked up and ready to go. Taylor tells me that we’re going on 3 and I don’t remember hearing her count. All I know is I’m suddenly flying through the air. I seriously don’t think I took a single breath on my journey down Fremont Street. I’m sure I did, but when I finally got off, it just felt like I had been holding my breath the entire time. I did survive though.

After my brush with death, we hit the casinos along Fremont. Neither of us had any considerable luck, just a few smallwins here and there. This was an odd trip to Fremont Street for us as we were leaving to go back to the strip around the time when most other people were arriving on Fremont.

We were actually going to the Hard Rock Hotel to play some. I haven’t been here for awhile and couldn’t find my card so I had to stop by the player’s club and get a new one. I didn’t have any luck at all here, but I remember why I stopped coming here. At the time, I was mainly walking the strip so it was pretty inconvenient for me to come to HRH, but I also don’t really care for their selection of machines. I’m not saying I won’t come back here again, but it’s a place I won’t make any special efforts to visit.

We finally headed back to Caesars, grabbed our stuff, and checked out about 9:20pm. We were actually booked until tomorrow because it’s more convenient for us if we wanted a place to rest before a long trip back home. We didn’t take that time to rest this trip, but it was still a possibility. We then returned the car and then headed over to catch our flight. We still had a little time to kill before boarding so I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to get a Cinnabon.

We boarded our flight and Taylor was asleep on my shoulder before the doors were even closed. I usually have trouble sleeping on planes, but I dozed off sometime after takeoff and woke up about 5 minutes before the announcement was made that were were cleared for landing in Minneapolis and to make sure that we disposed of our trash, put our seats up, and secured the tray tables. The flight from MSP to IND was pretty much the same with lots of sleep for both of us. In IND, I woke up to the thud of us hitting the runway.

Thanks for that nice TR, you covered a lot of territory!
I really like how you handle designated driver each day giving the other person a chance for a full day of indulgence if desired. And your tone when speaking of Taylor shows great affection and respect - good on you! Y'all seem like a great couple together. I had to laugh about your near brush with death on Fremont St - I also hold my breath on scary rides, that or blood curdling screams, lol.

You really can do a lot in a short trip, but Taylor and I have been there a lot both as a couple and individually so we don't get distracted by the same things that many ppl will be distracted by. Enjoy your July trip. We'll be back next month lol

    I
I'm scared to death of heights so I really was scared of that one. I do love Taylor and she can get me to do things that I normally don't do and that's one of the many reasons that I love her. I definitely prefer holding my breath on those things than a blood curdling scream. Those are just embarrassing lol. Taylor isn't a huge drinker, but she should at least have the chance to do it if she wants instead of babysitting me for the entire trip.
