Ok, good to know. I'd like to see them, but I'd really like to go out to the old waterpark just north of Barstow and take pictures of the graffiti on the old concessions' buildings—it is quite a bit more interesting than the painted rocks, in my opinion.

To be fair, they've been saying this every year for at least five years now. My understanding is that the maintenance and upkeep is pretty negligible, and it's a huge draw that brings a lot of publicity, plus it's not like there's anything they could replace it with, but who knows. They also have pretty sound liability protections built into the land-use permissions. Either way, it's worth seeing!

Thanks for the info. This is on my list to visit, finally, during my upcoming trip and again with my mom in July, somewhat en route to Death Valley.

I hope they can extend their permit, but if they can't, at least I can say that I saw them. LOL If you're into photography, those painted rocks make for some cool colorful shots. :headbang:

The article says a 3 year extension ends this year.

With so many VMBers out there looking for little day trip drives and talking about bucket lists on the board lately, I thought I'd share the possibility you could miss it.

I hope they extend it for all the reasons you mentioned and also because weird roadside things are wonderful and we could use more of them, IMO.

If you haven't been, then I highly recommend it. It's just cool, and I always love public art, which this definitely is. It's beautiful, it draws guests, and it's a pretty good photo op if you're into that sort of thing.

If you aren't able to make it out there, there's a scale model of it on the upper floor of Aria, in that lobby-esque area between the self-park and ParkMGM. It's a great installation, for sure. As an art guy, I love these random public works.

You really lucked out with there not being many people when you were there. I can't tell but was this a bit after sunrise or closer to sunset? I understand both are the two best times of the day for not too bright lighting though I'm guessing early in the day is much less crowded.

That was a morning pic. We actually drive down there before driving out to Bryce Canyon. I have seen the magic mountains a few times. If you want to go when nobody is around, go during the week. I have seen many more people there on the weekend
