Welcome to the 2020 ViMBy award voting thread for Favorite Downtown Resort

The original thread is available here, and the master voting round thread is here. In summary, this poll was created based on the highest number of nominations. The poll will remain open for 7 days, at the end of which we will have our winner. After much waffling on my part, I decided on only 1 vote per person per poll, so you have to make the “tough” choices.

@Sonya has very graciously increased the number of poll options I can include, so we are relaunching these threads as polls. My apologies to those who already voted in the original threads, but you will need to revote in the poll.

Thanks to everyone for your participation, and happy voting!

    And the nominees are:
    4 Queens
    California
    Downtown Grand
    Downtowner
    El Cortez
    Fremont
    Golden Gate
    Golden Nugget
    Main Street Station
    Plaza
    The D

Being a Vegas veteran (but sadly a newbie to Downtown) I think this is great. I'm planning my near-30th trip to Vegas (but only 2nd downtown) for next month, and couldn't be more excited. But I see some properties that performed well on this list (particularly the winner!) that I'm sorry to admit I never even got to last October. I had intended to visit them all but found myself spending a lot of time at the D, GG and DTG. This trip I'll be sure to get out and check out a lot more properties on fremont.

I'm also a dedicated Strip rat, and have only been downtown once. I found that for the most part Fremont isn't really for me, and only spent a brief amount of time in the casinos there, but I did spend a good few hours at MSS and found I liked it a lot, especially the Boar's Head Bar, and Jose the Bartender. I definitely feel I owe Fremont another chance, and wouldn't mind spending more time at MSS.

I agree Basil. My first-ever trip downtown was about a 4 hour visit one night back in 2013 or 2014. Prior to that it had always been a "something I'm going to do this trip but then I don't because of all my boozing/gambling" entry on the bucket list. I enjoyed myself, and appreciated playing $5 craps on a Saturday night, as well as the fact the drink service was a far cry better to the strip, but I didn't feel any desire to return Downtown and it wasn't for another couple years that I ever went back. Additionally, my wife at the time was all about the glitz and glamour of the strip and that sealed the fact DT wasn't for us. This isn't meant as a knock on my wife - we both absolutely loved Vegas - but we had different ways of experiencing it. For me, I was happy with hours of time at a craps table or sportsbook, while she enjoyed slots, champagne and nice meals and a long luxurious bath.

When I found myself unexpectedly single in my 30's a few years back I realized the tone of my trips changed from enjoying time with my wife to wanting to do all the things I can't do (easily) at home - day drink, booze the night away while rolling dice and betting on sports. I spent a few trips on the strip in a comped suite at the Palazzo where I never once sat on the couch or looked out the window at the "strip view". I walked 30 minutes past expensive steakhouses to get cheap eats at a food court or McDonad's or White Castle (I appreciate a nice meal too, but when I'm alone in Vegas I'm all about quick, cheap bites). I distinctly remember getting "in suite dining" one night after walking 20,000 steps on the strip and not wanting to do anymore from my room at the Palazzo, a $18 sandwich (no sides) became $40 after taxes, an 18% service charge, a $7.00 delivery charge and a tip (yes, I always tip).

So I made my first stay downtown in October. I'll admit I had a bit of a love/hate relationship with it at first. Downtown during the day can be a bit sad, as someone who loves walking the strip in the mornings, walking Fremont was decidedly less enjoyable. I was staying at the DTG and was depressed by their 1/2 craps table until later in the day, and I still missed the big sportsbooks with the VP bars, but overall I was ok with the cheaper table limits and improved drink service and eventually found my groove at properties like Golden Gate with their old school (but fun) craps crews, the D's Long and Vue Bars for sports, and I didn't even scratch the surface of most of DT's properties. I repeated in suite dining at the DTG, a sandwich with upgraded fries (i was drunk, i don't remember what made them "premium" - maybe cheese?) and a shake was $25 with tip. And those 2 bottles of water they put in your room every day - completely free. As is that fridge you can stock yourself with whatever you want.

For my trip next March I am currently booked at the Palazzo. But as its gotten closer I'm finding myself leaning more and more toward Fremont - and this weekend I made a conflicting booking in a GG Suite. I'm not sure I'm ready to declare myself a convert to DT Vegas yet, but I think I'm close, and this next trip may seal the deal.

Sorry for the long post, but I know when I was looking at switching to DT I scoured every place I could for people to tell me about it and why they switched or didnt switch. Fremont is not for everyone - that is absolutely true. And I admit there are times I just want to get away on vacation and feel like I'm someplace nicer than what Ohio has to offer - and frankly that isn't Downtown Vegas. But if I'm just looking to blow off steam, have the option to stay cheap, and play low limits if luck isn't being a lady, well Fremont is a great option.
