So...I have been going to Vegas since 1997. Video Poker has been my main game. Not my only one.
I have logged about 34 visits or so in that 20 year time period. I am not sure how many hands per
hour I play, maybe 3 to 4 Hundred? I am a low roller pretty much, so with a limited bankroll I can't sit
for a whole day or play 6 hours at a time. But I do play a lot for a couple hours or so.
I know the Royal only comes around like what, every 40,000 hands or so? And I think I probably
have not even played that many hands.

But I have played what I think is a fair amount, and to never have it one is frustrating!
Still chasing the Royal after all these years!

Not as long as you, but I'm on year 6, and 12 trips and still haven't hit one either!

40,000 is just the rough average. Also depends a lot on how you play, and the specific game you play. Perfect basic strategy would get you to that average, but if you're not playing perfect strategy it could be somewhat hurting your chances. But the biggest thing is variance! You might just be one of those tiny percent of people at the short end of the curve that goes hundreds of thousands of hands without a royal. Looks like I'm right along there with you!

I'll throw a number at you. There is a 10% chance that after playing 90,000 hands, that you won't have hit a royal, assuming proper strategy. This means if 10 people are playing 90,000 hands each, the typical result would be one of those 10 not hitting a royal flush.

There is a 5% chance that after 120,000 hands, you haven't hit a single royal flush.

I mostly play 100 Play BP penny and last September I had 21 royal flush over 4 days. The most I got were 6 on one play holding 4. On our trip in February over 4 days I had 1 royal. I have yet to get a royal playing on dimes and up.

I hope you don't give up! Keep going at it and it will come...when you least expect it!

As much as knowledge of the game and strategic play increases the chance of snagging a Royal, we all are still prisoners of that thing called variance.

You must have had your fair share of 4OAK's I bet!

I know your pain. I don't play as often as I used to, but this forum makes it seem like Royals are so easy to get sometimes! So I try again and can't even get higher than three of a kind.

    Oh well!

Not playing perfect strategy might increase your chances of getting a Royal while totally destroying your overall return eg in Deuces Wild being dealt ADDDD and throwing away the 4 Deuces :faint: would infinitesimally increase your chance of a Royal while significantly decreasing your return and increasing your chance of being sent to Bellevue

I feel your pain. Been playing VP for over 25 years and never have had a Royal Flush yet. I do have 2 SF in that time under my belt though. Been playing serious VP for 6 - 8 hours a day each trip 3-5 times a year for 5 years now and still can't get one. I use trainers for BP and JoB, and been a member at VP dot com since 2011.
Being a mathematician and 30+ year card counter at black jack, I do know what to hold and what not. It's just my bad luck. Can't wait for it to end though.
I always say, "maybe this trip will be the one". Nope. Never.

    Seriously missing my second home.......

I've also played a fair amount of VP and never hit a royal. I've only hit 1 RF in hold em (on the flop) and I slowed played to the river but realized it was the worst time to have RF since everyone folded on a small bet.

My first gambling was in Reno in 1992, my mom got a SF progressive at the clown bar, I didn't even get a 4OAK. Since then I have had several SF, with the worst being K high twice, and a 4OAK for every card, never with kicker when playing that type of game, and never a RF. I'm going to put in more time on my next trip to try and break the drought.

The Royal always comes when you're not expecting it. So just try not to get one!

I had a 5-year Royal drought, that's many many Royal cycles because I played a lot.
I also had a period of about 2 months, got at least 1 Royal (all on single hand) every time I went to a casino,
that's more than enough to even out my 5-year drought.
I also got two $1 Royals within 5 minutes., on single hand play.

It's bizarre, some of these droughts y'all have described. I got one last week, but on a 3-play. Even at that, I hadn't had one in about 60,000 hands, which is a little long for me. If you play perfect strategy, you should get one about every 40,000, regardless of how bad the paytable is. The only difference is, with bad paytables, you'll go through more cash getting the royals.

I use the WinPoker app on my phone -- it's indispensable for me now. Has I think all variants of all the VP games, and you can plug in tough hands when you're in a casino and it'll tell you what to do.

I play it on my commutes in the weeks leading up to my trips as a refresher. If you start with Jacks or Better, then switch to the other games, most of them build on the JoB strategy.

I use the same app. It's not cheap but it's a damn good program.

    No Royals for me either.
