I would say that the $20 "trick" is like an investment; "past performance is not an indicator of future results." I have redeemed rooms from MyVegas on 4 trips to Vegas. I was upgraded to a Contemporary room at Excalibur by asking if one was available, no upgrades available when I asked at Monte Carlo, I was sent an email offer to upgrade to a Corner Suite at Aria for $50 per night, so I took that, and I received an upgrade to a Madison Avenue room at NYNY and tipped the clerk $20 after she told me what she did. It really depends on where you're staying, when you're staying, how long you're staying, how friendly the desk clerk is, and how friendly you are. My suggestion is to ask if they have any complimentary upgrades available for a specific room type that you're looking for, if you're granted an upgrade, tip what you think is appropriate.

I am 3 for 3 on getting upgrades...I just didn't know if they would actually do it specifically with myvegas comp because the comps are restricted to a specific room type. But I'll give it a shit this summer

Has anyone done this in conjunction with a comp stay? We're Gold at V/P which qualifies us for a "room upgrade", so I'm never sure when we get upgraded how much the $20 has to do with it. On our next trip we're combining a comp stay at V/P with a comp stay at LINQ, where we are just gold, so wondering if it would be worth it at LINQ.

So I'm guessing you can do this even in the "diamond" check-in line?

I am Diamond and have done this. It really depends on a couple factors: the availability, how busy they are, the seniority of the person checking you in, etc. I have stayed at at Planet Hollywood 3-4 times in the past couple months, all on weekends. I used the $20 trick on the last two trips and was upgraded to a 800-900 sq ft suite (not listed on the website) and another time I was only moved to one of the newly remodeled rooms on a higher floor.

Absolutely. Clerk at Aria tried VERY hard to get us a huge suite (manager shut him down; said it was a suite with a conference table & we wouldn't use it)--and we were on a MyVegas comp for 2 nights. He did get us a corner room with a strip view.
Same trip we were Forum Tower at Caesars (comped) & $20 got us Octavius Tower--SCORE!

Guess this is the best place to post this. Was wondering if you are on a comp stay and use this to get an upgrade does it affect your future comps? Meaning would you be expected to play more to offset the upgrade that the comp originally didnt cover?

It would not. The hotel still sees your 'reservation' as whatever you had booked. If your host upgraded you ahead of time, then yes it likely would.

I love this topic. Go Big or Go Home - $50 to $100 is the way to go for a chance at an awesome room! if you are going to gamble thousands of dollars - what's the risk for $50 to get moved up to an excellent suite

Is it in bad taste to attempt the $20 sammich when checking in to a full comp stay? I'm asking for a friend.

So somebody in this thread said that front desk/tip-induced upgrades on a comped stay would not affect future comps, albeit years ago; is that still the case? It seems like that has changed (where comps can be adversely affected), at least per other threads on VMB :hmmm:

    Howso?

The front desk changes room types and offers upgrades quite a bit, even un-tipped. This is a pretty frequent thing across the hotel industry as a whole. Just last month I checked into a Holiday Inn Express and was given a suite because presumably all of the other rooms, including the one I booked, were already full. They’re not going to penalize their guests, especially those that they felt deserved a comp in the first place, because of their own operational decisions. Likely if someone sees reduced future comps, there is something else at play (i.e. reduced play, algorithms adjusted, more no play days, etc).

    Maybe.

Casinos look at ADT to determine offers. They also look to see if you have been overcomped in the past. And, if asking for back end comps on an existing trip, they look at what you have been already comped.

When you get a comped room, there is dollar figure attached to the value of the room. If the new room has a different price, then it does impact what they COMPED you.

But - I have not seen where this happens (higher room rate) some of the time or all of the time when the front desk person upgrades you.

If you have a 2 bed room, the only upgrade short of a suite is the Stay Well rooms, which I think are a ripoff!!!

I've honestly never tried the $20 trick comp or not but last week we had 2 nights comped at Mandalay Bay and did the remote check-in thing the night before. Since we were staying there at the start of a much longer road trip and it was a last minute thing I really didn't care about the room so much so we ended up with a 10th floor resort king. When we arrived I went to the gold/platinum counter to get key cards and the guy there said "give me a second I think I can make this better". He moved us to the 39th floor and a bigger room. I'm not even sure what they call the room, we've had the end suites before but this one was more towards the core and on an angle.

In any case I was so pleased after we saw it I went down and gave him a $20 tip. So in a weird way I inadvertantly did the $20 trick on a comp!

Not the traditional 20.00 Trick, but in a similar purpose. What are thoughts on using a similar "trick" to attempt to have the resort fees waived? For my purposes, I have comp nights and am not a CET Diamond level currently. So, the RFs add up and are truly simply gravy for the property, as we all know. But, does the front desk person have the authority to comp that or waive the fees at their discretion (with a little incentive to them}? I don't prefer to wait till check out and play the cat and mouse game with anyone in a different position based on play, etc. If anybody has experience with doing this or even input, I welcome your comments.

It's been a while since this has worked for me. I have completed four trips to Vegas in 2022, with one remaining, and only the first one resulted in an upgrade.
