Can confirm I’ve successfully done this at Hyatt Lake Tahoe in Incline Village.

Flashed $20 between my fingers, said “let’s just say my fingers were to separate, would you have an upgraded room available?”. Desk agent smiled because he knew what I meant. Confirmed he could put me into a pool-facing patio room, instead of the “basic” room I had been booked into. Dropped the $20, he pocketed it, and I was off to my patio room.

This was a weekend in mid December of 2018.

any decent upgrade is well worth $20.
