Dublin Ireland?

I'm in the infancy of scheduling a trip to Dublin Ireland. I've never been to Ireland, or even Europe. I'll be there for a little over a week and I'm looking for a nice hotel in the $100-$125/night range in Dublin. Interested in any recommendations of those who have traveled there, or live there. This is my first trip to Europe so any helpful hints would be greatly appreciated. As always, thanks to my fellow VMBers.

 

European hotels are not quite like American hotels. You might be in for a little culture shock. European hotels tend to be much less fancy and smaller than what you'd expect. The very nice hotels in Europe are very expensive. Do you plan to travel around Ireland or stay in Dublin?

 

I plan to travel by train throughout Ireland. I will definitely spend a couple of days in the Tipperary and Limerick area. Other than that just starting to formulate a game plan and gather as much reliable info as possible. I'll be traveling solo.

 

Bring a converter for your electronics. It's worth the money to buy a good one.

 

I was in Ireland a few years ago on vacation. Dublin is a nice, small city. We did the Guinness and Jameson tours, plus we visited Dublin Castle (which has a lot of interesting history), and some of the other sites around town. The countryside in Ireland is really nice. We took a drive southwest through County Tipperary and visited the Rock of Cashel, which are some really breathtaking ruins of a medieval cathedral that was destroyed by Oliver Cromwell's army. Ireland has a lot of castles. There are so many castles that some were just ruins in the middle of a cow pasture and the farmers would leave a can for donations from visitors who just wanted to go onto their land to take photos. The Irish were really friendly while we were there and made us feel really at home. While traveling through the countryside, I recommend staying at B&Bs instead of hotels. The rooms and food are better and the innkeepers can give you a lot of good deals on tourist stuff. All our best meals were also at local pubs instead of the fancier restaurants.

I've been to Dublin a few times. I've stayed at Buswell's which is on Kildare Street (heart of town) and weeknight rooms may be in your price range especially if you book early. The hotel was clean and the breakfast was amazing. Best omelette I've ever had. I also stayed once at a hotel called Wynn or Wynns on Abbey Street. It was clean but not as nice as Buswells.

The weekend room nights can be brutal as there can be many different large events.

If you get a chance, the irish Nationsl Stud tour is very nicely done...about a half hour train from dublin.

Don't miss the book of Kells at Trinity College, the Brazen Head bar (oldest bar), get a museum pass and you can get into the castle, killMainham prison, and another museum of choice.

 

From Dublin, I've taken trains to Cork to kiss the Blarney Stone, out to Ennis for business, and up to Howth. The trains in Ireland are dependable enough but slow.

Depending on your electronics, you don't need a converter, you need an adapter. Cell phones and lap tops will work fine on the Irish 220V mains, you just need to convert the plugs so things fit.

I didn't find the food to be wonderful. The Guinness is great. So is the Bulmers.

 

Hi, I am from Scotland but have been to Dublin over 10 times. The Arlington Hotel on O'Connell bridge is where we always stay. Rooms are nice, excellent location, brilliant buffet breakfast and good bar.
