Hi there, hitting vegas in september and coming from ireland. was thinking of hiring a car one day and heading out to the grand canyon. a few sites i looked at mentioned that and international drivers permit may be needed. i last hired a car in the states in 2011 in Florida and this wasnt a requirement then. is it needed in vegas for car hire?

    thanks

International drivers licences are just translations of your normal licence. I assume Irish licences are in English so you will be ok.

We had to check local and international licenses when I worked at Avis. Should be a nationwide thing, the person in Florida more than likely overlooked it. That international license is what gives you the right to drive here. It is very necessary.

International licences are only required if the original is not in English. That's what I was told when I asked.

The international Driving license was the law in Florida. Until they realized how many foriegners visited and brought in money.

They scrapped it pretty quick in order to not piss people off.

    don't know about Nevada though.

I've been renting cars in Nevada for 14 years. Never needed the IDL. They don't even want the counterpart licence when you pick the car up. Never had a problem at all and have rented via a lot of different companies.

I would recommend that you check out rentalcars.com. They provide an all inclusive package that will most likely be cheaper than renting direct and paying the extra insurances. PM me if you need more info.

I am driving in the states with my Austrian license without any problems. Have done this a couple of years now (once or twice a year for 2-6 weeks).
