I have stayed on the Strip many times and would like to try downtown for our next visit. Too many trips too often leave us tight on cash, can someone recommend a low cost but clean and nice hotel downtown Vegas?

We have stayed at Main Street Station and enjoyed it. We belong to the Boyd players club and probably didn't pay rack rate which is $33 to $38 during the week! We also love the Golden Nugget, but it is more. Friends enjoyed The D when it was Fitzgerald's. I'm sure you will enjoy downtown as long as Bellagio is not the standard you use to judge hotels.

Nicest downtown rooms (of the ones I've stayed in) - in order:
    1. Golden Nugget
    2. Plaza
    3. 'theD'
    4. Fremont
    5. 4-Queens
    6. Golden Gate

...but, with that said, I would suggest a Boyd property, as they seem the easiest to earn comps from

We've only stayed at the D and Fremont, and although we are big Boyd fans I would definitely recommend the D out of those two. The pool is very small but never crowded. Rooms are nice after the remodel, and comps are easy to come by.

Stayed at the D (Fitz) and Plaza. Agree with the rooms at the D but be prepared for a LONG wait for the elevator. Try to get a room on a lower floor so you can use the stairs. I've waited 10 minutes for the elevator before.

During stay at Plaza, there was a very strong smell of pot and someone had the emergency exit door propped open with a wine bottle. Don't care about the pot, but the propped door didn't feel very safe.

I have stayed at MSS, GG, GN, and Plaza. The ones I'd go back to are MSS and GN. Stay at MSS, away from the noise of the Experience, and just walk a few yards to Fremont.

Of the places I've stayed at:

California: OK rooms, about the same as a Holiday Inn. Includes a minifridge.
Golden Nugget: The gold standard of downtown, but relatively pricy (but still 1/3rd less than the Strip). I'd spring for a Rush Tower room myself. GN is tight-fisted with comps.
Fremont: Cheap but tiny rooms, cramped bathrooms, and kind of worn out, but you're a minute's walk from the casino or food court.
The D: Nice renovated rooms, but really hot in summertime because of old air conditioners, especially if your room faces west (odd number).

I've been a strip person that has ventured downtown twice so far and am planning a 3rd trip. My first trip was GN in a Rush room. That was comfortable from a strip perspective in terms of the room. I would stay there again. You have to realize it's not a fancy strip property. But it is a nice property. I also stayed at the Downtown Grand. I wasn't in love with it but the rooms are nice, little sparse for me. My next downtown trip will be at MSS. I've never been in the rooms but I love being in the casino and feel very comfortable there. I find it relaxing.

All of the downtown rooms have drawbacks, most of which have been noted already. For location Four Queens, Golden Nugget, Fremont really can't be beat. If you are into pools, Golden Nugget is the clear choice. I haven't stayed but I would be willing to give the Downtown Grand a shot. It is a really nice looking property and an easy block to Fremont.

As mentioned by others, MSS is still my favorite. Just far enough from the chaos to be a little more relaxing with great VP choices and the scratch card program is a nice bonus. I really, really hate the showers. I've gotten pretty good at predicting which temp. fluctuations warrant jumping away from the water so now it's just the height of the shower head.

The D is superior in comps to any other casino downtown... and even without comps their rooms are extremely inexpensive for a nice room. The rooms have been renovated and are attractive ... look at their website for pictures and prices of rooms and suites, etc. They are generous with their freeplay and food comps. Also if you have an offer for 2 to 3 days they are good about extending your stay on a comp up to 6 days.
    ---
We have high level Boyd cards but they don't give us half the "freebies" and their downtown rooms are "old". But I do like Fremont's $3 crap tables. The D has Freebet Blackjack and PaiGow mania... two table games I love to play and you don't find those two just anyplace.

No love for the El Cortez Cabana Suites? If you've never stayed there, you are truly missing out. Get a Jr Suite at the very least.

Perhaps with regard to true earned comps, they are.
When it comes to "offers", I almost never get anything from 'theD'...I get monthly offers through bconnected, and they always include either 2 or 3 room nights + $10 food credit. This is with Ruby status and a low-to-moderate amount of play (10-16 hours of play per trip).

Currently, the best offers I've been getting have been from the Plaza - up to four nights, Sun-Thu.

I think I must have fallen off of 'theD' mailing list or something, as I haven't received anything from them in over a year. Curiously, I do still get offers from Golden Gate (2 nights, Sun-Thu).

Even though I get offers from GG, GN, and DTG, I won't stay anywhere but MSS.

Depends on what you want. If you just want a place to hang your hat (and maybe deal with a hangover), the Boyd properties are hard to beat (MSS, the Cal and Fremont). If you want to hang out at the pool and having several nicer dining choices right in your hotel is important, the Nugget is the only real choice.

My wife and I usually stay at the Nugget during "pool season" and Boyd properties otherwise. Boyd rooms are about like a Holiday Inn. Clean and quiet, good place to sleep etc. We have done the majority of our gambling at Boyd properties and get room offers and food at times too. But we're going to play a bit more at the D this trip too. Looking to expand our options/locations and we enjoyed the "vibe" at the D in Feb.

But back to your original question....... Most places downtown will suffice if you just need a room. If you want a resort, its the GN.

    Hope this helps.

    JW

I spent a ton of money last month at the D and haven't got squat. Nada.

If you have never stayed Downtown then I would recommend staying at The Golden Nugget:

    - It is the most "strip-like" of the Downtown casinos
    - The rates will be more than most places Downtown, but are usually cheaper than on The Strip
    - They have a good location right in the middle of Fremont Street

I think the important things with a first time staying Downtown are:
    - At most of the other places the hotels will seem smaller, might seem dirtier or "grubbier" and more worn and aged... there are lots of people who have never stayed Downtown and gone with a super cheap option and then wound up ruining their vacation and having a horrible stay because they mentally couldn't make the transition from the luxury on The Strip to the lesser/cheaper properties Downtown.
    - You might want to consider splitting your stay and doing maybe 2 nights Downtown and then the rest of your stay on The Strip so that way you get a taste but if its not for you then you got the rest of the trip to look forward to
    - Don't worry about who gives the best comps, like the way this thread is going: First, you might not want to stay Downtown again in the future or might want to try a different place, so who cares about future offers, especially when the rooms are so cheap in the first place. Also the math isn't that simple as "I played at ____ for __ hours and I get great offers!" like some think... just because they get that after so much play doesn't mean everybody is going to get that. And then finally, by not worrying about it you don't end up locking yourself in to concentrating your play at one property and can take advantage of one of the best features of Downtown: the ability to casino hop because there are so many casinos so close together.

It takes the D a while to get the offers going. I think the comps are easier at 4Q and MSS than the D although I get great offers from all three. I've tried to get the GN to offer me something (anything) and the best I can get are $39 nights. I'm not willing to commit a ton of up front play to get an offer that I don't really need.

I would try the Downtown Grand. The rooms are the nicest downtown, all new and clean. The staff is extremely friendly. And they have good blackjack rules.
