So, our big Vegas holiday is almost upon us!!! Me n my party (4 of us) would love to ride The High Roller at a time that would let us catch the Vegas sunset!

I've done some research and see that The High Roller takes 30mins to do a full rotation (I therefore presume it hits the peak after 15mins). I also looked up Vegas sunset times, we'll be there from 3rd-15th and according to this: http://www.timeanddate.com/sun/usa/las-vegas?month=8&year=2014 sunset is between 19:35-19:45.

We're gonna book a time slot in advance so its a bit cheaper, is it the case if you book a time-slot you get straight on at that time or is there still a queue of sorts? We were thinking getting a 19:20 slot to catch the sunset, whats peoples thoughts?

Thanks in advance for any help!!

    A couple of thoughts:

Starting your ride at 7:20PM really depends on what day you are go on. If the sunset starts at 7:45PM on the 3rd and 7:35PM on the 15th then a 7:20PM ride time would make more sense near the end of your trip than the start.

Next, it really depends on what you want to see: the listed times of 7:35-7:45PM are going to be the start of sunset, not the times that the sun is a little sliver over the mountains casting a red glow over the city. The sun takes about 30 minutes to set so if you start your ride at 7:20PM when sunset starts at 7:45PM you are probably only going to be seeing the sun just start slipping below the horizon by the time your ride is over.

Stratosphere is actually a pretty good place to see the sunset where you can take your time, have some drinks and get in plenty of photos and not have to worry about whether or not you'll see the full sunset or not.

Otherwise, I would say you probably do want to book your time in advance: its a good idea (to be on there during sunset) and I would expect thats one a lot of other people have :) :) :)

Thanks for all that, lots of good thoughts!

My understanding of the sunset times on that site is that it the time when when the sun has completely disappeared over the horizon. So I was working on the basis that the 10-15mins running up to then would be the sun going over the horizon.

I am certainly also keen to check out the sunset from the Stratosphere. Also like the idea of the Mix Lounge at Mandaley Bay, do you know if that gets a view of the sunset?

I did it at sunset, just book one for 15 minutes before. So if it's 7:45, go at 7:30 :) it was perfect! The seemed to set over like the Venetian.

Mix is a good spot too! Best view in Vegas from there, in my opinion. If I'm not mistaken, isn't that closing soon for a renovation? Check before you go.

Yeah, cannae wait!! With The High Roller, if you have a pre-booked slot is it a case of turning up and you're straight on, or is there still a queue (in which case we get there earlier)?

I couldn't find any info on the web about Mix being closed for renovation, do you have a link or anything? Cheers!

No waiting if you pre-book. We scheduled for 10 minutes after sunset, and it was perfect timing.

You are right though I'm not sure you'll see the western horizon from the High Roller. Maybe someone who's ridden it can confirm.

I went through similar research when deciding on the time for a helicopter flight over Vegas last summer. I wanted to do it during twilight, that point where the sun just sets, the sky is still dimly lit but all the casino lights go on. I think it is the nicest time and if that is what you are looking for then you should ideally start your ride at sunset because twilight lasts about 30 minutes. On your chart you linked its the time between sunset and went civil twilight ends.

I don't know about Stratosphere but the view from Mix is beautiful and you can stand on the balcony there with your drink and again I think during twilight is the nicest view. Though in my opinion one of the nicest looking buildings during twilight is the one you'll be standing on - Mandalay Bay. Its gold windows capture that light perfectly.

Cheers for that, I think we'll book then to ensure we get on exactly when we want to!

Great info there, I'll defo look into riding it so I see Vegas during the twilight, cheers! Will definitely be looking to enjoy the sunset from the 3 best points, The High Roller, Mix & The STRAT ! Good job I got a nice new camera before this trip! So bloody excited, been planning/saving for this trip since the start of last year and its almost upon us!!

Looking to do much of the same as above...but an added question:

Can you pre-book in person or only on line?

I'm hoping that I might have 2 free ride tickets waiting for me when I check into the Flamingo.

Also, did someone say it was cheaper to book in advance? I also thought that if you book in person and are staying at the Flamingo (or maybe it was have TR card) you get like $5 per person.

That's a great question actually, forgot that if you stay at the Flamingo up til the end of Aug you get $5 off a ticket.

Can someone confirm whether you can indeed book a specific time in person or whether that's an online thing only? Cheers!

This is a great idea to see the sunset. I never thought of this my last vegas trip memorial weekend. How long are you on the high roller for and are you allowed to bring any alcohol on with you?

I saw someone else mention it elsewhere and I agree, it seemed like a great way to catch the Vegas sunset!

The High Roller lasts 30mins, so it hits the top after 15mins. I'm not sure about booze, I think you are allowed drinks as long as its purchased from their bar, I'm sure someone can confirm this though either way.

Correct, drinks purchased at the bar are allowed on board. Just be sure you start with an empty bladder...
