Would You Sit Thru A Double Feature ? Or A Doubleheader ?

I remember the old days -
You spent an entire afternoon at the movie theater.
Double feature.
2 for the price of 1.

Would you sit thru a double feature, now ?

And I remember draggin' my father to a Yankee Stadium double header -
back when....Mantle had retired + the Yankees were horrible !
We sat in the cool shade on the field level stands on a hot August afternoon -
My father was snoring a couple times.:evillaugh
I'll have to call him + remind him + say "thanks dad !"
He's 91........and WWII vet.

 

The first Yankees game I ever went to was a double header. I was just a kid and thought it was so cool that we got to see two games. We also used to do that in our local movie theater when we were young, not even 2 for 1 but more like every movie for the price of one. We'd go in the afternoon and it would be dark by the time we got out.

 

I cannot sit through one movie at a theater these days let alone a double feature. Movies these days aren't as good as they used to be. I remember enjoying baseball doubleheaders as a kid . I couldn't sit through two games now.

 

I think a big part of the appeal of double features in the past was that they were a cheap form of entertainment and air conditioning on hot summer days. Nowadays there are more entertainment options available to people, as well movies aren't cheap, especially if you are buying snacks and a drink, and you can find air conditioning almost everywhere.

 

A double header? Heck, no! A single baseball game can barely hold my attention for all nine innings.

A double feature? That's another story. I wish they would bring them back. One summer we saw Adventures in Babysitting and Can't Buy Me Love four or five times as a double feature. Just loved it! I can't really remember even hearing of them since then outside of novelty events.

 

I once went to a DH for the Triple-A team in Louisville. One game went extra innings and the other had a rain delay of about an hour. A lot of beer was consumed that afternoon/evening. Somehow I managed the 45 minute drive home in my alchohol induced haze without anyone dying. I'm glad I'm not that guy any more.

Oh, I would do it again, just not the drinking part.

 

Hell yes to both. I remember see many double headers at Fenway [yes I am a Red Sox fan!!!] as well as double-features. I remember my father and my friends father would take both me and my friend to 2 movies on Saturdays. Great fun. Oddly enough I am the first of the MTV Generation kids, yet I think most people my age and younger don't have the attention span anymore to sit still for that anymore.

 

I would vote the exact opposite. I would love more double headers in baseball. It's by far my favorite game to watch in person. Where as, movies are just "eh" and I'd rather wait for it to come out on DVD and rent it for $2-3 or wait for it to come to Netflix instead of paying $12 a pop for a single showing.

 

Wow my first Yankee game was also a double header against the Tigers in 1977. I still get 2 movies for the price of one. I pay to see one then sneak in to see a second one. My wife thinks it's stealing, but we go in the afternoon and the seat wouldn't have sold anyway.

 

I could definitely do a double header at Wrigley or Fenway.

Double feature would be doable, especially in IMAX. I would love to see the recent "Cosmos" on IMAX, albeit too many episodes to be practical.

 

Double headed for sure ............... drinking beer/watching baseball in the stands for 18 innings sounds like perfect day

Doubleheaders are a thing of the past and will never return. Rainouts are made up with Day/Night games, 2 separate events, so the teams can make nearly double the money.

I used to love the twi-night doubleheaders on a Friday or Saturday. The first game would start at 5:30 and the stadium would be nearly empty, but would start to fill up around the 4th inning or so.

Back around the late '70's, a Phillies vs. Pirates twi-nighter would be the best thing around. Both teams were good then and there were several future Hall of Famers on the field. About a third of the crowd were Pirates fans who drove in from Pittsburgh.

When I was a kid, Saturday afternoons would have about 25 cartoons, 2 or so Three Stooges movies and usually some old Randolph Scott western. Sometimes, a local DJ would host a hula hoops contest during breaks. Everyone would flatten their popcorn boxes and throw them at the screen. The manager would turn up the house lights and announce that the next kid who threw a popcorn box would be banned for life. Inevitably, some one would throw a box at him to the hysterical laughter of about 400 kids.

Not always true. The Mariners had a game rained out against Oakland earlier this year and they played a double header with at most a 30 minute break between games.

 

My first Yankees game was a double header in New York. BOTH games went extra innings. It was great! Saw The Mick. I remember my dad getting frustrated driving in New York (with three kids). I wish there were more double headers. Hopefully going extra innings!

I did a double header in April here in Cleveland and then topped it off with the Cavs game that same night. I will admit to getting to the first game a little late. The first game had a noon start and was done at 2:30. The second game started at about 3 and it too was done in under 3 hours. That left me enough time to get wiped out at the Craps table at the Horseshoe before walking into the Q.

I would do a double header again in a heartbeat. As for the double feature, there are rarely two movies out at the same time that I would to see. However, if a studio or theater put something together where they showed the Star Wars, Indiana Jones, or a like trilogy out I would definitely be up for that.

 

We must be around the same age Joe,my dad won Mets tix at his company's picnic and the game was a DH in 1968.It was 'BannerDay' at Shea and I was thrilled.I wonder if the Mets still do that,between games fans could walk around the field with their homemade signs,bedsheets etc..I'm sure some of the 'Amazins' of the '69 team were playing..
Little life learning session for me also-I put down the program dad bought at my feet at some counter we stopped at and it was stolen..to this day I'm wary of this in the casinos.airports etc
Dad was a Navy vet of the war also,but passed away in '93.Greatest Generation for sure.Me and 2 older sis's had it made in the shade as kids!

 

Double feature? How about a triple or quadruple-feature.

We still have a drive-in theater near here. The quadruple is called Dusk To Dawn.

I usually pick a movie to sleep on but easily have sat through 2.

I've heard the broadcast announcers ( Keith + Ron ) on TV -
talk about bringing it back.

Definitely Double Header. I got lucky on the last one I went to since a group of us were able to watch it in a corporate box at Coors Field. It was great! I forgot who they played but I do remember the Rockies won both games.
