The Brady Bunch was one of my favorite shows, and I was just watching a Brady Bunch special a few days ago. I actually really liked the house. R.I.P. Alice.
She made the best pork chops and applesauce. Condolences to Sam the Butcher and the family of the deceased.
Not to speak ill of the dead, but when I was a kid, I went to an event where she was appearing, and she was kind of a bitch. It crushed my little Brady Bunch loving soul. Nonetheless, I'm sorry for her loved ones that she is gone.
I didn't watch Brady Bunch......though I had a girlfriend who looked like Marcia. * I remember Ann B Davis from "Love That Bob" - as well. * Suekel, tell us more about that event + what happenned ?
For some reason she always seemed to play the frumpy roles. I remember thinking that if they would only do her hair right and such she could be quite attractive. Then there was this other semi-recurring character on Love That Bob, played by the lady who did Beverly Hillbillies (forget the name), who made Schultzie look like a beauty queen by comparison.
I was around 7 or 8 I'd guess, and attending Vacation Bible School (an aside: we were Catholic but my Mom sent me to some random church summer program, so desperate was she to get us damn kids out of the house for a few hours a day during summer vacation). Anyway, that church booked Ann B Davis as a speaker, apparently she was quite religious. Well, the place was packed with kids wanting to see Alice from the Brady Bunch, and who were not remotely interested in hearing Ann B Davis talk about Jesus, and she got all pissy, telling the organizers to get all the kids away from her and make people stop screaming out "Alice!!". In retrospect it's funny and I get why she was annoyed, but at the time I was so bummed that Alice was being kind of a bitch. I guess I expected her to dispense kindly life advice over a platter of freshly baked cookies or something.
Thanks for telling the story. I work w/ a guy ( as a kid ) he asked Mickey Mantle for an autograph - Mantle said "F - off, kid !" Celebrity snippetts - * "Mrs. Hathaway" was in "The Beverly Hillbillies" - was it Mrs. Jane Hathaway ? I don't know the actress' real name.
when you book "Alice" to appear at a children's event, kids are not going to want to hear Alice talk about God, politics or herbal health remedies. what did she expect? the only reason she was hired to speak about God was because of her celebrity, and yet she acted offended by it? does not compute.
It was Vacation Bible School, not a mall opening, and I'm sure she appeared for free. Speaking of Nancy Kulp, wasn't she elected to congress for a term or two?
regardless of the venue, you're not going to convince kids that the topic is bullying, God or euthanasia when you bring in a celebrity they recognize, fee or no fee. it would seem to me that when "Alice" speaks to children and wants to preach to them, she'd know enough to play off her celebrity, go into the Jesus talk, and then give the kids a little something at the end that ties her career to God. but what do i know, i've never been a celebrity, or a housekeeper, or a Jesus freak.
