Doubled the 9th hole today and shot 39 for the front.

Add 10 for the inward side.

    Shit.

    That's golf for you,Ken

Reminds me of when one of my buddys(a young 79) missed a putt on 18 to shoot 79 ,his age. Sad thing it was a month before he turned 80. Only concession he's made to age is that he plays from the gold(senior) tees rather than the whites.
Yesterday a buddy and me played a local course we got on Golfnow.com. There was an 18 hole and 9 hole ladys league in front of us(we had no idea) so after 4 holes we called the pro shop and asked if we could scoot back and go out on 10. The girl said that after going out to check that the first group of 18 holers were already on 10,but after the 9 holers quit we should move quickly on the back.Shortly after the Pro,a nice kid, showed up and handed us a raincheck for a free round. The front took us 2 and a half ,the back 1 and a half hours and thats with taking xtra putts and enjoying the fact that on the back there was nobody in front or behind. We finally caught the 18 holers on 17. It was a beautiful day and I guess a 4 hour round isnt all that bad. Just scored a $15 golf and cart on a good county layout for today .

I have a Golf Outing, tomorrow.
    RAIN is forecasted.......crap !:Þ
I see 70% rain is forecasted at tee time +
    the first 2 hours ---
then, the percent dips down to 40%.
    *
I don't really enjoy the Scramble format --
I'd rather play the course, myself.
So.....I guess.....I'll just have to drink more beer
    while it rains !:evillaugh

    Ken,
I hate when that happens !:nworthy:

I walked, with a caddie, on a somewhat hilly course, and we got around in about 2:20, 2:25. ONLY way to go!!!

Usually that comes with a price also

You probably got a freebee or a really cheap rate, but what would that course cost normally for green fees and a caddie?

There's a price with everything. If you play at a joint that "includes" the base caddie fee, like a hotel "comp" you pay for it elsewhere, in the case of a caddie (or a forecaddie) with the green fee.

It's private. Caddie fee was $60. I tipped him appropriately.

And the cool thing is the day before, I played a rather threadbare muni for 18 bucks and had as much fun. Different fun. Different tone and vibe and everything. But still fun.

That sucks. Fun event and it gets hosed away. Sorry.

I don't mind scrambles or shambles. Playing everything at medal gets old. I like a good mix of formats. And for most of us, using ESC in regular play, we're likely in pocket a few times anyway.

Haven't ever in my life used a caddie, what is the "appropriate" tip?

    Ken,

what course did you play? With a 39 including a double, you are going to have to give me strokes, lol.

Joe, as an aside, when I play at Shadow Creek with a caddie, I tip $100 - $120 if we are in a foursome, $200 if playing solo or with a partner. For that course, that is the standard tip (caddie fee is included, they only earn whatever you tip)

Ken, you need to hang your hat on the 39. I guessed you were down in RSF when you mentioned hilly.
Playing with a real caddie, not forecaddie, is a world of difference in the way the whole round unfolds, and one's involvement in it IMHO.
It is truly sad how seldom one finds a course with real caddies. That is where many kids were first exposed to work ethic, rewards therefrom and the game itself. Now it's only the higher end private clubs and expensive resorts. Even Pebble has days where the caddies have the clubs on a cart.
The adult beverages after the round do taste better if one came in with a 39 though.

Thirty one years playing golf and one caddie ever.

Guess thats the difference between the executives and the working stiffs. But thats fine ,it's a game that can be enjoyed by everyone regardless of income.
I belonged to the private club where I live for 6 years and honestly they pretty much priced me out by raising the fees each year to a point where I really didnt have that much extra cash to spend on golf ,nor did I think the course and all the other crap that went on was worth it. As homeowners, we're still able to hit the 19th. hole in the Clubhouse for food and drink . I played today on a golfnow deal for less than the cart would cost me here, then met Mrs. JG at the club for cocktails.

I played for many years on a public course in Philly called Walnut Lane that used broomsticks for pins because kids kept stealing the real ones.

The greens were so bad that our local rule was that you could pick up if you got within 3 feet of the hole.

It was common for dogs to run out on the fairway and steal your ball.

It was common for a 6 foot putt to miss the hole and roll so far back down the fairway that you had to chip back onto the green.

Many, many people who would walk on at about the 3rd hole. The marshal was always some local rummy who you could slip a fiver if he caught you.

Believe it or not, back in the 1930's and '40's, they played a PGA event on this course. Sam Snead won it one year.

Flash forward several years and I'm standing on the tee at Foxfire in North Carolina, after playing Talamore the day before. The regulars back at Walnut Lane would die to be there.

I thought about how incredibly lucky I was.

I hope that someone gets the point of this story.

Always thought I worked damn hard when I had my "executive" positions. lol

Golf is like everything else in life that is discretionary. Do couples with no kids really "need" a 6,000 s.f. house with all the bells and whistles? Hell, does anyone "need" a place that large? A 7-series BMW over a Camry? Pebble Beach or Pacific Grove muni (I happen to love both)? Gambling? Booze? Line-caught salmon v. Tuna Helper?

My best golf bud here is facing that same thing, jersey, at the club. The membership is dying out, new blood is not coming in, so the reaction has been to levy more assessments, increase dues and bring in some outside play. He's to the point now where every time he goes out he thinks, "Wow, this $50 round is actually costing me $200, and I could play how many times at La Purisima or wherever for that $200?"

But he doesn't want to quit because of the ties, the camaraderie and the ease of just being able to show up at any time and play 18 or 36 or maybe just the short loop of 15-18 when time is tight.

I need smartone here for on of his "damn-kids, get-off-my-lawn" posts. lol

    To wit: Damn carts.

A big part of the demise though is the publicification of the game. The democratization of the game.

Forecaddies are handy, always enjoyed them at Bear's Best or Cascata or wherever. But a caddie, carrying and walking … nothing beats it. #1, you're walking, and that's how golf should be played. #2, someone is schlepping you bag. #3, your mind wanders all over and it's calming. #4, you get an instant new friend and hopefully one quick with the needle. #5, it's damn fast.

There is no similarity between golf and putting, one is played in the air, and the other on the ground."
