Visiting vegas for 3 months I need all the info I can get (names of areas)

My friend & I are from Virginia (23yearsold) & we want to visit las vegas for about 3 months at the end of August-November. We both work at Olive Garden & would like to transfer to the one closest to the strip & public bus transportation (no car) which I think is the 1545 E Flamingo Rd one. I have been looking on craigslist for rooms to rent in vegas & I am unsure which locations are the closest to the Strip, Olivegarden, & the public bus stations & also safe. Any information & names of good areas & places to live near the strip, public transportation, and the olive garden at 1545 E Flamingo Rd please list. More information about the public bus systems would be helpful too.

That location is the closest to the strip and also on the bus line so meets your stated objective. It is also close to UNLV and the airport.

This link is to the bus schedules. http://www.rtcsnv.com/transit/routes-maps-schedules/ As you can see the 202 goes up and down Flamingo so you don't need to live close to the strip to have good access. I think going west of Decatur or east a bit will get you a better area. I don't know the east side very well maybe someone else can help.

So are you looking for a furnished appt. for three months? Most apartments want a six month lease at least, but maybe you could get a timeshare or something like that I'm not familiar with them. thank you so much with the helpful information! yes because apartments want a 6 months lease we want to rent a room from someone looking for a roommate for a few months in their home or apartment whatever it is. I have definitely been trying to do my research and checking craigslist to see what I am in for, lots of postings for rooms for month to month rent all over vegas and not sure what is the best area just want somewhere close and safe. There is only one public bus transit in vegas I am guessing?

 

Ok if I was advising my daughters I would first say "don't do it". The area you picked isn't the safest. How can you check out the people you will live with? They could be cooking Meth in the back room. At least have a background check done on them. Las Vegas is a big city with all the big city problems and then some.

If they insisted, I would want my daughters to live away (probably west) from the strip at least a mile. And I would also want a guarded and gated apartment complex for them.

Only one public bus system but there are some private that operate on the strip only I think. Lots of cabs of course too pricey for everyday but good in an emergency.

What time of year are you planning to do this 3 months? If it's in the summer you may be able to get a snow birds condo while they are gone. We only use our condo a couple months a year and never rent it but there are plenty that would. Check Vacation rentals by owner http://www.vrbo.com if you tell them you want three months I would think a better price could be negotiated. You deal direct with owners most of the time. Once you find a place you like check the crime stats or come back here with apartment name or cross streets so we can tell you what we know about it.

I would avoid using Craigs list for this just too many stories and scams. It's possible I'm sure to get a better deal but please do background checks etc.

I checked out vrbo, very beautiful rentals but out of our price range, unfortunately the cheapest I could find was 700$ a month & on craigslist I can find all furnished, utilities and rent all 100$ a week. Iv never done such a thing yet but here in Virginia its a very common thing to do, and I would of course do a background check and they will on me too. I will take every precaution, I would want to see proof they have a very good job, and talk to their ex roomates and would hope they wouldnt need to run a meth lab also with a good job haha. Also I would tour the houses, meet the people and I will be very very picky. Nothing can talk me out haha. I will be very smart Dont worry. Is the area that bad around flamingo? =/ Also I think if you saw the ads for rooms for rent on craigslist and read some of them you would feel a little better haha thank you for your advice and concern ! Also are the buses 24/7?

Please stay off of Craigslist to find your temporary housing. It is way too dangerous. Anywhere.

Rent.com is a good place to look. And I believe southwest Las Vegas has some nice area's. Maybe ask the mgr. or asst.mgr of the restaurant where you will be working, if they can suggest any area's or apt. complex's.

Please, do not room with anyone, background check or no background check. Not everyone has a record and they still can do harm. Please stay safe.

What price range for an apt. can you and your girlfriend afford? That may help us, help you find something.

Try airbnb.com. They are like VRBO but they also rent out rooms and partial homes.

Be careful whatever you do though!

 

Bus Schedules

Like most things in Vegas the buses run 24/7 but check the schedules because the frequency may change depending on time of day. The schedules are on the site I provided a link to.

Consider working at Olive Garden on West Charleston. It is in Summerlin across the street from Red Rock Casino. Way better area to live in, although farther away from the strip. Bus stop is directly across the street. Restaurant is always packed and I would guess the $$ is a whole lot better.

Everyone on this board loves Vegas, and just about everyone (especially many who moved to try and live there) will tell you the same.

Your questions show your naivete. I could say more about what could go wrong, but hopefully you'll decide on Hawaii or the Bahamas or Death Valley...

Sorry, but some questions deserve honesty.

 

Vegas has lots of people who started out just like you. Looking for some adventure, a chepaer cost of living, fun opportunities.

You have to figure that there are loads of people qualified for the exact same job as you. Could be you show up and a week later they cut your hours. Then what.

You have no car, cant get around easily, no real place to call home other then renting a place from someone else.

This really leaves you exposed for exploitation and in a town like Vegas there are tons of people just waiting to help you along that path.

I understand the eye for adventure but keep some sense about it.

Why not go out for a few days, stay someplace super cheap and ride the busses around and scout the place out for yourself? A bit of diligence would not hurt. It will cost you a couple hundred bucks but you will then know if those is a good idea or not or at least have a feel for the vibe of the place.

In the long run the money spent will be well worth it. If you cant afford it then whats going to happen if you lose your job once you get there? Its a very real possibility and it wont be that easy to get a new one in a town where a large part of the population does your same job. Its not like home.

Just some things to think about.

 

Oh my god so many people are here to talk you out of your plan. Do what makes you happy - there are risks no matter where you live or what kind of profession you are in. I'd recommend taking precautions, definitely. (Maybe a safer area if you can afford it?) But live your life. Don't let others tell you you're being stupid just because you're young or unfamiliar with the area, etc. Be sure to tell us what it's like living there! I'm jealous. I would love to have the freedom in my job where I could transfer to Vegas.

I dont understand why $700 a month is too much...for two people. Thats $350 each a month, they dont have a car. Even if they average $10 a hour at OG (tips etc), thats ~40 hours a MONTH...10 hours a week...what is that? two (short) shifts?

If that is cutting it too close then they should really reconsider...

They need to assess their finances before flying accross the country for a three month adventure...

Naive is to describe someone who either lacks experience in certain matters or thinks much too lightly on certain subjects (underestimating the complexity of the subject). Many times I associate naive with innocence and (young) age.

I would diff make sure you know the area first before moving in. I would echo the advice of transferring to the Henderson OG location. Henderson and summerlin are nicer areas, so is greenvalley.

Some of the areas near the strip are ghetto, not sure if that would be a deal breaker.

Just research the areas and save your $ and have a backup plan if something happens (hours cut, your friend bails, etc). People do this all the time and if I had a do over I would do something like this...like Mel said do what makes you happy but really know what you are doing before jumping i. Good luck!
