I have been away from the board for a while, since my last trip was in October. I was thinking that my wife and I were to go vacation this year some place tropical. However, she is thinking that she just wants to go to Vegas instead. At first I was like no way were going some place tropical, but I love Vegas and know I will have a blast.

We have a couple offers I could take advantage of. Monte Carlo; three free nights in a suite $200 in free play.

MGM; three nights in a grand towers suite, ( not sure exactly what that room is) $250 in free play, $350 in resort credit and limo service to and from airport.

Wynn; three nites free. No free play

I usually stay at monte but the MGM offer sounds pretty good. One thing to consider is that it would cost me less to go stay at an all inclusive resort than I'll want to take just for gambling. So unless I have a winning trip even with the free rooms Vegas will cost more. Unless I win!

So I'm perplexed, I really wanted a lay on the beach and drink until the sun goes down kinda vacation. However, the sirens of Vegas are calling my name and I'm hearing them loud and clear.

Im sure I already know most of your advice, but I'd still like to hear what you think. Help convince me either way.

Mexico is nice, all inclusive is nice.... but Vegas..

With that MGM offer I would already have the flight booked. The one thing that really pushes me away from Mexico all inclusive is the food. I haven't had good food in an all inclusive before. Like nothing mind blowing. Vegas... best food destination ever.

So my advice, like you'd expect... Vegas.

I don't get offers like that...so of course Vegas is the easy choice.

    I also haven't done an all-inclusive yet.

There really are no free lunches, it all comes down to how we pay for this vacation stuff.

If you want beach and kicking it, Cancun. If you want to gamble, Vegas.

If you have a chance to go to Cancun, do it. You'll be hanging out mostly in the resort albeit it's still in another country.

Vegas is close and in the States that you can go anytime you want. No planning is necessary.

Either place is fun though. Enjoy, life is short!

First off, congratulations on marrying a smart women!:poke:

I could never get into the entire beach/pool scene. Read a book; relax; drink an umbrella drink. Not for us. Suncoast has a nice looking pool and jacuzzi and we looked at it from our hotel window, then we went and gambled.:evillaugh

You mean the "nice" pool not far from the loading bays and in the shade of the tower? Yep, that's JUST like an exotic locale, azure waters and white sand.

Then again, I don't blame you for sticking to the casino in that scenario!!

Well, we only saw the pool in the morning which is pretty much the only time we are in a room. It was in the sun! I don't know about loading docks. Like I said we never made it to the pool.

Nice Offers! I've never been to Mexico. I've heard too many horror stories about the Policía Federal Mexicana stopping you to extort money.
No Thank you! You made a wise choice. Have Fun!

We actually made it down to the Suncoast pool during two separate trips at 7 am, which is when they open. The pool was in the sun, very nice, and we were the only ones there that early. Yes, it really hurt to take time out from gambling.

Other than that, I've never been to Cancun, but Cozumel three times – terrific scuba diving. The last trip there was my first all-inclusive and I've now been spoiled. But like ken2V said, "If you want beach and kicking it, Cancun. If you want to gamble, Vegas." (Substitute Cozumel for Cancun.)

I'm not an unabashed fan of Cancun mostly because of surge-y sea and walls of towers. Agree with Cozumel as a better option, and Isla Mujeres even more so. Or heading south. All comes back to the experience desired. All-inclusive has its upside, but if food quality is more important than mere quantity, like everything else it can run the gamut.

The issue of "safety" and Mexico is relative. In some sense it is a relatively lawless society. But look at our murder and incarceration rates. And there are places in most any city represented here we'd not want to send visitors. The bad just seems more "institutional" down there. I have friends who are totally comfortable down there, anywhere. Some won't do anything but transit between the airport and the resort, and never go out. I'm somewhere between. Some won't go at all. What are you going to say? Personal travel comfort zones, like everything else, run the gamut.

As for the Suncoast pool, yes, there can be a lot of sun there, but it is time/seasonal dependent.

Jamaica all inclusive is currently our happy place. Already hit Vegas twice this year and JA once. We are going to JA twice more. I am hooked on the all inclusive arrive and don't touch your wallet approach. I fully realize that you pay upfront, but we are big drinkers on vac and I feel we def get our money worth. I also like not being nickle and dimed if I want an extra cup of coffee or orange juice or heavens forbid room service!

Its nice that the entertainment is included as well. As Ken says it runs the gamut, we have seen amazing to amusing in JA, but the same can be said for LV and there we had to buy a ticket to be disappointed.

I will continue to love both, but give the all inclusive a try and I suggest JA over Mexico.

Thanks for the help everyone. I am not sure what the heck we are going to do. I told my wife that I was going to book the Vegas trip, then she told me to wait because she may change her mind again. I tell you, I can't win!

What about Tahoe? I know, it's not exactly tropical but bear with me.

    Gambling.
Golf. (Sure, sure Edgewood is bloody expensive and righteously gorgeous, but you can pop down the grade to a number of courses, and then there's Truckee.)
    Big ass beautiful lake.
    Mountains.
Hiking and water sports and … did I mention golf and gambling?

I have been to Cozumel, Riveria Maya and Puerta Vallarta Mexico. I Loved the Caribean side much more than the Pacific side. We did an all inclusive twice and in Cozumel did not. I cannot get my husband to go back to Mexico.. so that is a destination with my girl friends. There is a lot to do, and is definitely relaxing. We normally do a week in Mexico.. but I can only go 3 nights Max to Vegas. I get over stimulated and don't sleep much.. I sleep ALOT in Mexico. So what is it you are looking for? We actually rented a house for a week this February on North Captiva Island FL. We had to pre-order groceries and stopped at the Liquor store on the way out.. but that was a relaxing vacation. Went with 3 other couples. Large house - 4 bedrooms, 4 baths, pool, ocean side. Only golf carts are allowed on the island.. so no rushing or traffic. You can rent a boat to island hop.. you can kayak or paddle board.. they have a few restaurants. but sitting at the Main Pool bar and drinking will set you back quickly. Whatever you decide to do.. ENJOY.

    My two cents:

I love Vegas... the vibe, the splendor; it's my happy place. So much to do in Vegas, and there are pools; albeit not with the beaches Cancun has to offer.

The past few years we have cut our Vegas trips back for taking a winter Cancun vacation. We found a resort that has a 27 hole Jack Nicklaus course and is an all inclusive (can get golf all included a few ways too). This resort has a great spa, and plenty of activities to fill your day if you desire; or you can just grab a lounger on the beach or by the pool and chill. It's like a "super resort" there are 3 sections, the beach is blah for a Cancun beach though, but the pools make up for it. The food was good (11 restaurants and 3 buffets) and the drink service was excellent!

Wishing you a great vacation on whatever you decide :licklips:

When the very classy Playboy casino was open in Cancun, this was a different equation. They charged 200 pesos or $20 to get in, which kept out the riffraff, had great rules and a high end Mexican clientele. Very few slot machines, few Americans, and lowish limits on tables. I'm not sure I would have played high limit there for various reasons, but it was a great place. I was there on NYE a few years ago and they passed out champagne at midnight to EVERYONE including employees actively dealing. Very cool. It was not for everyone, with a dress code, admission fee, and discriminating doorman. Also probably not the best place if you couldn't manage Spanish, but I can.

Puerto Rico is still a decent option if you want tropical beaches and gambling. The Ritz and El San Juan have a high end feel and comps are available if not particularly generous. The exoticism of the destination is a nice change from Vegas if you can swing it, and airfares can be quite cheap in summer.

I mean you can relax at the fancy pools in Vegas! I'm not a partier or really a drinker and I LOVE Vegas, I manage lots of relaxing, you can still do the spa, and relax in your suite.

If you really wanna chill, Wynn might be a good bet.. MGM is great too, but that's obviously more hustle and bustle.

Also so much new stuff has opened since October! Go check out the Cromwell, and Linq and ride the High Roller...
