BBC Documentary Las Vegas

The English BBC documentary maker Louis Theroux shot a great documentary a while back about Las Vegas and some gamblers and High Rollers.

I really enjoyed watching it and wanted to share it !

I've seen that a few times. The mid roller who gets stuck for 5 figures and is on tilt and the old lady who gambled away her fortune at slots give me the heeby jeebies. Those aren't healthy ways to enjoy gambling.

Above all else, you need to learn to enjoy gambling on money you can light on fire. If you can't, you shouldn't be gambling.

The High Roller on the other hand was fun to watch. You could tell he wasn't betting next month's bills or his entire estate.

I loved watchin' the "high-roller" shove $100's into those slots!

 

Yeah that's an old one but a good one. In fact I keep a copy of it on my iPad because it makes for good viewing on the way to Vegas, sort of as a kick in the gut reminder of what going on tilt looks like. The look on the faces and mannerisms of the mid-roller and the high-roller when they're deep into chasing is so genuine and familiar.

 

Ya it's a good one, seen it 2 or 3 times now.

That Louis Theroux is a pretty cool dude, the Vegas one was the first documentary I've seen of his. After that I've watched pretty much everyone I could find on Youtube and they'll all pretty entertaining.

His documentaries are generally pretty good, this is one of the better ones. A shame that he's limited to the LVH, but I guess most of the other hotels flat out refused him.

 

Poor kid watching his inheritance spun away lol. I love how all the hosts are like "s(he) is my "friend"first. Right.

 

This is quite depressing, the mid roller who won and lost it all was clearly a fool, bet high when your winning is an interesting system...
The old lady was clearly looking for a place to call home, and that home was bleeding her dry.

And that host, what a gem, he is my friend he claims.

 

I love Louis Theroux. When that guy is on tilt and binning thousands....and Louis is all like 'Are you having fun?' :evillaugh
Anyone who has ever been on tilt recognises how well that man did not to smack him one in the chops!

His latest series is all about small items on L.A.
Wild dogs, End of life care and sex offenders...:confused2:..he's certainly gone into more heavy viewing recently!

 

Thanks so much for that link! It's hard for me to believe I hadn't seen that documentary before, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Perhaps it was because I finally visited and stayed at LVH for the first time in February, which is where the video was shot. Of course, the featured players were hardly what I'd call "average," but if I wanted to see average, I could look in the mirror! I also learned a lot from watching it; namely, you can't leave when you're winning, you can't quit when you're losing, and Vegas isn't about gambling – it's entertainment! And towards the end, the host remarked, "It might be illogical and self-defeating, but when you're winning – gambling makes perfect sense!" However, I haven't yet decided if the video makes me more anxious to go back or to maybe give up gambling altogether!

 

I always think the only way to quit is getting on the airplane going back home, up until that point it's impossible to stop,unless you blew your entire bankroll

 

Haha laughed my ass off at that point, he asks it with a grin on his face, loved it.. Te guy could not believe he was asked that question.

Agreed on the part about the heavy viewing,got a bit more dramatic. Cold be the fact he's maturing as a journalist and wanting to have that reflected in his items as well..

 

Yeah they are so full of shit. They pay their bills that is why they like em.... how long would they like ya if ya low played 3-4 trips in a row after getting same comps as when you were losing tons....

 

I think the hosts are confusing friendly behaviour with friendship.. I mean if someone is nice to me it doesn't mean they're my friend or something..

The only reason the casino arranged the funeral for the old lady's husband is because she lost 4 million bucks in 7 years..

 

I love this documentary so much that a couple weeks ago at Wynn, I sat at a pai gow poker table with Dan "The Man" and must admit I was a little star-struck.

He's only that wild when he's winning. The table was cold. And yeah, he was wearing the sunglasses.

I think the person I feel bad for the most was that dude who "wasn't a quitter", he's probably the same kind of guy who wears a Tshirt that says "AA is for quitters"
I mean that High-Roller, he had enough money that it didn't matter what he blew, and the old lady... come on she has one foot in the grave what does she care. I don't feel bad for her son, he probably made a great living and if a 40-50 year old man needs to live off his parents money still then there's something wrong there.
But dam, that delusional guy who wouldn't give up, kept playing and playing. I want to know more about him, what happened? Does he still gamble, is he even still alive? Wish they would have followed up with him.

 

Louis Theroux made out pretty well on his Vegas trip if you are paying attention. At the bj table he racked up a nice $300 profit. With Dan the Man at baccarat he made around $1,500 in an hour and a half.

That salesman who made about $10,000 at bj on his first night before he lost it all and then some is your typical run of the mill Vegas degenerate.

As for the Toronto mattress king that guy is just sad. For him this is all playing for excitement and most likely to get away from his wife (the roulette scene if you are reading between the lines). For the slot lady? She is doing it to fill a void/loneliness in her life.

At first I thought people go to Vegas or any casino establishment to win money which is not the case at all. Many I have met and realize do it for other purposes.
