    Following sporadically.

    He'll be feeling pretty miserable.

Yeah, it was hard to read his posts the last several days. Maybe next year? Hang in their Mikey.

Bummer. I saw they were having troubles, but I was hoping they'd pull through.

I've always wanted to do a thru-hike on the AT. Unfortunately, a thru-hike is not the best way to get into shape. You have to be in very reasonable condition before you start to survive it (for obvious reasons).

I hope this doesn't stop him from a repeat. He could just use this as a false start and lessons learned for a future attempt.

Good for him for attempting. Sucks that he was another casualty.

The hardest part is the first 1/3 of the trail (except for some very lengthy white blazes in the last couple states). People I know who have hiked the AT straight through usually lost 20 to 30 percent of their body weight by the end. It takes a real toll on the body

Although some people don't appreciate it, Bill Bryson's A Walk in the Woods, is a great read about thru-hiking (he didn't complete his thru-hike in one go and only completed sections of it).

I love the book for the history of the AT and the accounting of what it takes to thru-hike. It gave me real inspiration and appreciation for the monumental task that it is and made me love hiking more than I already do.

    This^^^

Have hiked brief sections, but I wouldn't enjoy lugging 36 lbs of gear for the duration or sleeping in a tent for a good part of 6 + consecutive months. Hiking steep elevations is very difficult with no gear.

I was really looking forward to several months of great tails from the trail, and I'm sad he had to quit so soon into the journey. Hope he can get his job back (or another job - he really trashed it in his prelude to the hike blog) and continues to enjoy weekend hiking, and that someday he can work up the strength to head back again.

People can check out the beauty of the southern portion of the trail and surrounding areas at the Smokey Mountain NP and along the Bluegrass highway in Virginia.

My SIL has been section hiking the Pacific Crest Trail for several years. Last year she hiked from the Columbia River to Stevens Pass. This summer she hopes to hike from Stevens Pass to Canada and finish her hike. Wow!

Makes me feel guilty for complaining when we walked from NYNY to Mirage. I kept saying "Why are we not taking a taxi?" :)

I am not sure Mikey was able to be in condition for such a strenuous trek.....not that I or any of us would be either......you take your lumps sometimes but at least he tried it as well.....
