I would say it is as far from LV Blvd, as the Plaza is walking to LV Blvd. quite walkable unless it is 120 degrees outside. This area continues to grown, develop and become more tourist and consumer oriented. Many line up at Le Thai for dinner, many like coffee at The Beat where there is free wifi, there is a dollar store and several restaurants and night spots. I am not so sure what the draw to Container Park is other than the fact that I've never seen one before. It is two levels of iron boxes full of botiques with stuff that is way overpriced. I love popcorn and not only eat it frequently and a lot of it but I can get microwave popcorn bags for 25 cents and make my own for about 5 cents a bag including the cost of the popcorn, the bag and the oil. Why would I want to buy it at Container Park for $4 or $5 ? Because I am on vacation? that's a half a prime rib dinner downtown or 1/3 a lunch buffet at MSS! Maybe it's just me being frugal? I bet chef, Dewey and Turtleman have skipped the popcorn too! Jimbo338
It's about a 10 minute walk from the Plaza. A nice walk straight down Fremont. http://vegastodayandtomorrow.com/THEdowntownMAP.htm#.UzrbeFf9b4d
It is right across from the El Cortez, kitty corner from the EC garage. From the Plaza, just walk east along the FSE and FSE east and you will reach the container park. Probably a 7 to 15 minute walk depending on the foot traffic in the area. I think many visit the place because it is "new" and so might be worth a look see. I drove by the place in January but since it was cold (and there was a guard at the EC parking lot) I didn't stop to check the place out. I will be staying at the EC in June so will probably at least check it out to see what's up.
Food and concerts? There's BBQ, tacos and some good acts playing. That's more than enough reason for us to drop by. Heck, we'd do it just for BBQ, although Big Ern's isn't up to Rollin Smoke. All Q is good.
We need a break from gambling sometimes, so nice walk from MSS and something different to see. We listened to the band a bit and just did some people watching. I liked the concept because I never heard of it, or seen it before. It's not like it's a destination, but still different when you need a break.
I think it's a brilliant idea. The question is will it be executed properly? Or will it be executed? The idea sounds new, but it's really nothing more than the street market I saw in Bucerias, Mexico, an oceanside community just up the beach from the all-inclusive Riviera Nayarit resorts outside Puerto Vallarta. I suspect many of you have seen something similar. The Bucerias street market is composed of a bunch of vendors selling similar souvenirs, mostly housed in simple wood shacks cobbled together almost as well as my buddy's ice fishing house where he resides for hours on end every winter here in God's country. Not having been to Container Park, I have no idea how easily they are able to provide electricity and running water to the containers, but it has to be cheaper than providing running water and electricity to a traditional building filled with dozens of individual shops, right? It would seem to me that the container shops would be a lower-cost way of providing a storefront to a start-up business. I've heard plenty about "pop up" stores in the past few years, and some folks are trying to use the concept of the overrated food truck (don't get me started on how ridiculous the food truck love affair is) to lay the foundation for a retail endeavor. Having never rented a mall retail space, I can only guess the cost of running your own business is extravagant, and prohibitive if you want to have a retail presence for a seasonal store. (I suspect that's why malls love their kiosks, although much of what I see sold at kiosks isn't seasonal, or unique.) So it would seem that Container Park could provide retail opportunities that we'd otherwise never see in downtown Vegas. That goes for the local economy as well as us tourists. I love the idea. The reality is, of course, can they find enough entrepreneurial folks to occupy spaces, or will the containers become the domain of low-rent operators selling low-quality goods to low-income locals. I hope for the former, but would wager on the latter.
Not a bunch of hipsters, mostly tourists going for a walk during the day. It's a nice chance to get away from the casinos for a bit. There were a few kids when we went but they where at the playground. We sat and listened to some live music, watched the kids play with the oversize dominoes and just relaxed. It's not somewhere you'd go every trip but it's good to see once.
You know me too well my friend. I know this if off the subject, but Jimbo, stay away from the microwave popcorn no matter how cheap it is - bad stuff and very unhealthy. Container Park - of course I plan to visit it. I'm not a hipster or anything of that sort, but like any new and shiny Vegas toy - have to check it out at least once.
I think it's overrun by kids, in fact - I felt a little out of place NOT having a kid with me! The day that we went - there were tots running all over the place and the food was pricey and the stores weren't much to brag about.
I walked, we got dropped off at Binions and walked it's a little bit of a hike, but definitely doable unless the weather is terrible. We walked through it, it looks REALLY cool. But all the shops just sells random trinkets that I'm not interested in personally. It felt like a fancy flee market. We didn't actually go in any of the stores... cause nothing was interesting to me. With it being so portable, that limits what can be there... It's worth checking out just because the place itself is cool... but don't expect to find anything super exciting to purchase.
