Will the low value of our dollar affect your Vegas vacations? Are you going less or for fewer days or planning on spending less? Today it would cost $1150 to buy US$1000. Ouch! Sure, if I win, I'll be getting more. That's a big 'if' on the winning.
Not just direct exchange loss- flights have also gone up accordingly. It's like starting the trip at a loss.
If the air and hotel are still reasonable it's not going to change anything for us. We're coupon using low rollers who love a bargain. Vegas is still a bargain, nothing up here compares in that area. I could spend less on vacations by staying home or camping but I'm not a camper anymore and the cocktail service at my house sucks.
It's not changing anything for us. We booked in December because the dollar was starting to drop. I remember going to NYC in 2002 when it was roughly US$1 - CAD$1.50. That made us question everything.
It limits my daily withdrawals, whereas before I could take out $900-980 a day without going over my limit now it would be closer to $800-860. Really only effects me because I have a daily gambling budget tied to my max daily withdrawal from my checking account.
I laughed and almost spit out my coffee when I read about the poor cocktail service at your house. That was funny! Good job!
Having your room, food and entertainment comped is the best way to hedge against the dropping dollar. Not converting dollars when you come back to Canada is another way. You lose 4-5 percent for each conversion.
Compared to how things have been lately that sounds like a lot, giving up $150 on $1000... but 10-15 years ago the exchange was so bad it would have cost you as much as $1,600 to buy $1000 US and other than the last 5-7 years over the last three decades the exchange rate has generally been around 1.30-1.35% As for nowadays, the Canadian government would like to have our dollar settle around the 1.15-1.20% exchange rate, just the "problem" is the prices for gold and oil remain so high they can't really push its value down.
For me it would affect the gambling bankroll more than anything else. But then again, my next trip would have a pretty small bankroll even if the exchange rate was good.
I know when the US dollar was nice and high 30-54% we did enjoy some really nice vacations in the Great White North.....houseboating was a bargain back then, now not so much. I have noticed everything in Canada has spiked in the last couple of years and now have stopped traveling north because of the higher cost up by you guys. Who knows what will come in the next few years.
It won't change much except we have less money. Cashed in 700 Canadian and only got 600 american. I am working a 2nd job to get a bit more before our trip and if i have any left i will not cash it back. We just leave it for our next states trip
None that I've seen posted at the casino cage. They don't need to entice you to come to Vegas, you're there. During the really bad old days, Reno used to give a decent exchange. Don't know if they still do.
I laughed and seriously nearly spit out my coffee too Lola; too funny (and oddly I have the same crappy cocktail service at my house).
Casinos in Fort Erie, Ontario where at one time the VERY best when it came to exchange rates......that mean you actually got what was the exchange rate without paying this, that and whoever else was trying to leach off you and them.........but now that slot casino is no longer more and the little guy get his exchange rate by bending over........OUCH ! ! !
Sometimes you can find a better exchange rate, but its usually only going to work out to $0.25-1.00 on $100 But there is an advantage for exchanging Canadian at the casino: when you exchange your money to USD they will give you a receipt and then you have 24 hours to buy back up to your original amount exchanged at the exact exchange rate you sold the money at.
