If u don't have a local casino, this is not for u..

If u r a serious gambler, Why not gamble locally..They give comps, have restaurants, big towns have shows. Also, no room needed, no vacation needed, no plane tickets

U have an extra $1000 per person to gamble (even more if ur room in Vegas is not comped)

Good point. I live near the Horseshoe Hammond and I love their 100x odds on craps. Can't beat it anywhere.

But you can't avoid Vegas altogether. It has so much more to offer.

Vegas has the feel, vibe, and atmosphere that local casinos lack.

Service, drinks, casinos, girls are a few things vegas offers at the highest level.

Serious gambling is only done in Vegas for me. At local casinos, I can't wager as I do in Vegas.

Don't assume folks don't gamble locally. But even if I went casino hopping here, the best I could do in a day is maybe 4 or 5 and I would waste a ton in gas in the process. I can do that many in Vegas in a couple hours. Even if I weren't on vacation in Vegas, I am more likely to visit places where they have casinos than not.

Yeah and I don't know where the $1000 number comes from...

A flight costs me $250-320 roundtrip.
    A room cost me $0.
Food cost me $0 with comps unless I want something outside CET or MLife.

That's $320 to get 2000 miles away from home, stay in a nice hotel, get to eat better food than any local casinos in Detroit, can casino hop amongst many casinos and spend the nights at some of the best clubs in the world.

It costs me $30 in gas just to get to the Detroit casinos.

Makes $320 for 3-4 days in Vegas seem like a steal.

Come back to me when my local casino allows 5 to 6 competitors set up shop on adjacent land thus creating a massive pedestrian friendly venue where I can walk from one casino to another in search of good games with a beer in my hand, then we can talk.

Even in Detroit where they built 3 brand new casinos last decade, they put them all far enough a part that you can't walk between them and they effectively don't compete with each other. They had a chance to make a nice gaming district like The Strip or Fremont St but instead they maximized the monopoly power of each casino and kept competition to a minimum. Screw 'em, I'll go to Vegas.

I would normally argue this as a free market outcome but it ain't. The casino interests and the state colluded with each other to set up this oligopaly and ensure that no more gaming licenses would be issued. It's not like I can set up my only casino across the street given sufficient funding and proper licensing. It's beyond crooked and it's the same case at most local or Indian casinos anywhere but Nevada and maybe Atlantic City.

Vegas for the weather! Shows! Dining! Foxwoods has tightened up their machines so bad the past few years, I haven't stepped foot in the place since last summer. Variety in Vegas...we like to hop around.

We have over a dozen "local" casinos within a 90 minute drive. But Vegas is Vegas. Local casinos can't even come close to the action, the entertainment, the food and the sheer vibe of Sin City. Local comps are shitty and personally, we like getting out of town and spending a few days at a 4 or 5 star resort, being waited upon hand and foot.

What gets me about this, about 4 months ago, the local casino upgraded their Bar Top VP. BP went from 6/5 to 7/5 and JOB from 7/5 to 8/5.

It is going to suck when we go to Vegas and once again are playing Bar Top Bonus Poker at 6/5. :grrr:

But on the brighter side, is sucks, so I will be sucking up the comp drinks. The local casino charges. :nono:

But that $900+ airfare would sure buy a lot of drinks. :drunk:

OK, and when was the last time you put out 25x, 50x, 75x, or 100x odds on craps to take advantage of that?

I consider AC (2+ hour drive) to be the main local casinos for NYC and while the Borgata or Harrahs can have a great vibe on some nights they still don't match Vegas. Nor does the rest of the town in the least.

But I think the main problem with local casinos is that they are LOCAL. When I'm in AC I don't feel like I'm away, I just feel like I'm out for the night. Vegas is an escape. When I'm in Vegas I feel disconnected from the outside world and that's a great feeling.

Sure I can foresee a scenario where they'd push me to my max-pain point by destroying the gaming conditions badly enough and making the strip look more and more like any modern city where I'd lose interest in going, but it hasn't come close to that yet.

I have read this three times and still have no idea what you are asking - about the $1,000.

In any event, none of the local casinos are Vegas. Sure, we gamble in Tunica, and Biloxi and Cherokee and others. But Vegas is still Vegas.

    What is the question?

Gambled locally in the 1990s (1980s as well if you count the racetracks were I worked). Realized it wasn't wise personally or financially.

I've been to local casinos three times since the 1990s (two of the three for CET Road to Rewards promotions, one on a pre Christmas Eve poker night). A casino opened a few years ago less than 4 miles from my house and I have no interest in going.

I go to Vegas to drink and relax, can't really do it locally unless you stay overnight or not drink (or I guess cab it to the new casino). Not really interested in gambling compared to in the past. I love my Vegas trips, but a couple of times a year gambling is more than enough. I look forward more to my Vegas trips because it's something different, not just one of many gambling excursions during a month or season.

Local gambling is populated by the same people, many of who are compulsive gamblers, and it's a sad and depressing atmosphere/vibe. That alone is enough reason to pass on local gambling, regardless of how convenient the location may be.

Some people on this board say they feel the same vibe in a Vegas locals casino (Stations or others). I never felt that way, likely because I am in a Vegas "relax / vacation" frame of mind.

PS - The odds are better in Vegas vs. ILL/IND (at least the three games I play - BJ, VP or live poker). Could be different elsewhere or playing something different but typically Vegas offers the best odds because they have the most competition (and are taxed less by state/local government).

I go to my local casinos often, but usually only have time for 2-3 hours of play. Alcohol is not free, buffet sucks, restaurants are crap to just okay. The good thing is the one i go to most has the most UTH tables of any casino I have been to...8 I think. They have an entire room of DD BJ at $25 min...12+ tables i believe. They have another room for $100+ BJ. And another room for $100+ Bac. Casino-wise, it is great, but the vibe is nothing compared to vegas.

Florida gaming is limited, no craps or roulette, except on casino boat, and while I like my local casino boat, I do not like the time wasted going in and out to 3-mile limit and I don't like being trapped, unable to leave when I want. Also, no hotel, no restaurant selections and really little to offer for comp use other than convert points to FP

As for the other casinos, like HR in Tampa, they're a monopoly with little to no competition, so they can screw you over with tight machines as much as they want. I got to HR Tampa with $1000, I might as well hand to guy at door and go home, it's that bad. The money I lose there, I can take a weekend or longer vacation in LV and have a much better time.

I've been on that casino cruise. It would make me save my money for VEGAS, too.

Locals: Terrible comps or worse. No free drinks. Awful game selection.

They give comps that might as well be a coffee mug and that;d probably be more than they truly give.

MLife gives 1 tier credit for every base point earned in Detroit, while they give 10 tier credits for every base point earned in Vegas. Detroit you get 8 tier credits per $1 spent, Vegas you get $25 per $1 spent.

Clearly highway robbery when you can get exponentially more in Vegas and it cost about $300-400 for your travel for 3-4 days.

MDLive is the closest for me at about 35 minutes away. These are the reasons I don't go there:

    1) No place to sleep, so if I drink I need a ride home or get a DUI. Both suck with one sucking much worse. I can pay for a hotel across the street, but its a Hampton Inn.
    2) 7/5 JoB VP machines at quarter level.
    3) 6/5 BJ at $25 minimum CSM.
    4) Craps tables were $25 minimum.

Add to the above that it is a single casino with no other ones near it. In Vegas when I hit a rough streak, I just walk to a casino next door and hope to change my luck.

None of the above is taking into account the intangibles of Vegas like the energy and much nicer weather than Maryland and huge events like fight weekends.

I can get 2, 3 & 4 in Vegas (at minimum and better in lots of casinos) with all the intangibles plus a nicer room to crash in at the end of the night.
