Hi guys, I've been lurking here for awhile dreaming about going to vegas and might have figured out a way to spend a night on Sunday April 6th. I'm having a hard time finding a cheap room that night. The best I can find is $60 at El Cortez (resort fee incl.) or $68 at Four Queens. Any advice on getting a cheaper room? Perhaps I should be asking this in the frugal forum :)
It's just the one night I will be in Vegas. Does phoning the hotels help? Can you ask for better rates? Thanks in advance for any advice.

If you are a member of the loyalty program for one of those casinos I would try calling the number on the back of your card and ask them for a rate for that night: if you've given them enough play in the past they will give you a discount (up to 100% depending on how much you've gambled there).

That weekend does seem strange though: its not when NAB is on and its not Easter Sunday... but rates are very high for it.

The Golden Gate is available that night for $29 through Orbitz.
Just be aware that Golden Gate has a resort fee of $20 per night. But $49 is still less than what you found for El Cortez or Four Queens.

Downtown Grand is available for $55 that night through their website, but they also have a resort fee of about $12.

Golden Nugget is available via Hotwire for $63 ($78 after tax, plus $5 Fremont Street experience fee).

    Good luck!

Thanks for the quick replies. That is another couple of hotels I can research on this forum. I don't have any player's cards. The one and only time I was in Vegas was about 10 years ago. Can you join any of the casino's player's clubs online and would they give any discounts for a first time visitor?

You could get a Landry's card online and use that at the Golden Nugget. A Landry's card costs $25,I think, so you might want to call the GN first to see how much good it will do you.

Good luck, hope it works out and you have a great stay.

    An Alternative Suggestion

Send an email to each hotel downtown... mentioning this is your first ever trip to Las Vegas and you would like to stay at their hotel... can they offer you anything special? You would be surprised at the answers you will get...
    ---
Also, if you frequent any of the Boyd casinos in your home area, they will probably give you a discounted room at Fremont, California or Main Street Station.
    ---
My personal favorites... The D... 4 Queens ... Golden Gate... Golden Nugget in that order.
    ---
Once you've decided on a hotel... take a look at my list of downtown eating values... put "eating ideas for downtown" in the search box and my picks and a bunch of other suggestions will come up.
    ---
Hope you have a wonderful trip... I love that place!!!

The championship game for the NCAA basketball tournament will be held om Monday, 4/7/14.

That may explain the elevated room rates.

ACMA's are that weekend and something else so rates are high everywhere. I can't see you getting much better than those rates but you can always call.

I know the acma's affect strip more but with those hotels booking up fast and way more expensive downtown will prob be more expensive too because the people are going to flock there to get cheaper rates.

Ahh March Madness in April, I should have known! Had to look up ACMA, is that condo mangagers? Did not consider conferences. So taking your guys advice, I've sent off this note:

Hi, I have a layover in Las Vegas on Sunday April 6th so I am looking for a room. This is my first time in Vegas and am quite excited. I hoping to do some gambling and enjoy a couple of meals. Do you have any offers or promotions for that night? It will just be myself and only need a basic room but wanting to jam a true Vegas experience into my 24 hours I have there!
Thanks for your consideration, I look forward to hearing from you!

I emailed it to a couple casinos but am having troubles finding emails for many. They seem to want you to phone which I may do. Thanks again, I'll let you know if I get any good offers. If not, I think that Golden Gate for $49 sounds pretty good to me!

Nope, it is country music award show, tim mcgraw also has a special at MGM and the whole shebang is 3-4 days long. I guess they shortened it to ACM instead of ACMAs but they are on the 6th with the special on the 7th and i am sure pre parties before. Busy weekend anyways.

The fan jam is at Orleans arena so events are not limited to MGM

Thought I would follow up on the emails I sent out. No one offered anything better than was already available other than El Cortez who replied that I would get 10% off if I booked on their website rather other travel sites like Expedia and Travelocity. I think I've read people talking about that on this forum but thought I would mention it in case others were not aware. I was pleased to get replies at all though so that was nice. Looks like the winner is Golden Gate for me! Can't wait to get there!

There is always the Hotel Tonight app for your phone. If anything doesn't pop up you like, usually a place off strip like LVH or Hard Rock will have cheap rates. It is always an option.

    downtown hotel

If you are going to gamble, your best bet would get the room at the Cortez..pay the 35, and then before you check out, you will probably get your room comped when you go to the players club. I'm a very low roller and got my room free on my first stay there (last Aug). They send me offers every 3 months now, and their promotion during April is that you have to earn 2000 points daily to get up to 3 free nights. They give you 5x bonus on points, so it is very easy to earn that.

Make sure you get their players card and get players cards for every casino you go to, and you will be surprised how many offers you will get in the future

You're lucky. I play mostly craps ($3 at the EC) and I never get any emails for free stays or offers. Never get any comps either. I think your offers are probably based on your machine play at the hotel IMHO.
