    My Trip Report

My trip to Vegas 8-15 Feb turned out to be one of my best solo trips to date! I spent my first night at Aria and the remaining 6 nights at the luxurious Four Queens. To do a full trip report or not always depends on exciting situations or happenings during the trip, while this trip was awesome, relaxing and fulfilling, I felt there wasn't enough excitement to do a day by day recap. I will just provide a Summary of my trip with a few reviews, happenings, VP pics and final results. Man I'm long winded, This summary ended up way longer than I anticipated.

    Flights
My first Southwest flight, all flights were on time, and we even landed 20 mins early into Detroit. I bought the early boarding and received A23 and A21. Great selection of complimentary nonalcoholic drinks and snacks and I very much enjoyed many Fat Tires during my flight, pretty sure I even got a free one! I was feeling great when we landed. I think Southwest will be my preferred carrier from here on out.

    Accommodations
Aria - Hey thanks MyVegas! but I did have to pay the resort fee. I stayed here for my first night on Saturday and was able to check in and get a room at noon. it was pretty cool scanning the key and opening the door to have the curtains open, TV turn on and soothing music start playing. Nice room but I spent very little time awake in that room.

    044.jpg

Four Queens - I usually stay at MSS, but have had a few minor issues with the rooms in the past. This time around the 4 Queens offer was slightly better than MSS with $25 a night, one night free and Friday night at $55. The room was quiet and tidy, but somewhat run down. The location in the front tower being within steps of Fremont can't be beat, and I will probably find myself staying again in the future. I had planned to play VP at 4 Queens so I could potentially get the room comped, but in the end I played very little at 4Qs.
I have always enjoyed playing VP at the two bars in the four queens, but this trip I wasn't getting a good feeling playing there. The first morning I was up early and wanted to put in a good deuces session at the front bar, but I left less than 10 minutes later. It was around 6am and very few people were at the bar, most of which were drinking glasses of water and asking to charge their phones (this by the way is a bartender's favorite customer). I took a seat and starting playing, during the ten or so minutes I played, two (how do I say this?) vagrant looking people came off the street and were standing somewhat closely behind me. Now I'm not saying they were going try anything funny but it made me very uncomfortable. I cashed out and took off for MSS, never to play again on 4Qs main floor that week.
Secondly almost everyone smokes in the Four Queens, I have nothing against smokers, I smoke lots of stuff. But cigarette smoke has increasingly started to affect me while in Vegas, and people like to smoke in the Four Queens. Through out the week I would try to pick spots next to people who I thought didn't smoke, profiling I suppose, but sure as shit 30 seconds later out came the pack. I have also noticed that the average time between butts is about 45 seconds. Please note that I chose to move away from the smokers, not ask for them to stop smoking. Some casinos are better than others for smoke, I choose to play at those casinos now.

One evening I was dying of thirst, I needed something non-alcoholic, and the 7-up vending machine on the 14 floor stole my two dollars. Each time I passed that machine I made sure I showed it exactly what I thought of it. I hope that some day I will piss on your rusted, junk yarded carcass, and I pray that day comes soon. Right then I made easily the smartest move all week, I walked to Walgreens and bought a case of water.

You've been outed, Your money stealing no drink giving days are through:

    Food
China Poblano - After a bunch of drinks at the Book and Stage I went to China Poblano to use up some Cosmo resort credit from a previous trip. I looked at all the other restaurants but wanted to try something different. I know Mexican/Chinese is not so different, but we don't really do Mexican well in Canada. Canadian's believe Taco Bell's Fries supreme is authentic. Just to add a disclaimer here, I was pretty blotto and am having a hard time remembering my visit. I remember sitting at the bar, getting a menu and immediately pointing to three different tacos. I remember one of them tasting like the smell of my cats wet food. I also remember the waiter asking if I enjoyed the tacos and me saying "not really", I hope that I did not tell him that I thought I just ate cat food, but I think I did. I was initially going to have some desert as well, but decided no way after the cat food taco.

This was probably my drunkest night (always happens on the first night). After dinner I played some very aggresive 2/4 poker at Flamingo and Paigow at Margarittaville, all while not slowing down on the beers. I took a walk to Osheas to plays some craps but the table was full (for the best) and smartly decided (surprise!) to call it an early night. I remember getting secret pizza and then dropping said pizza on the floor of the Cosmo, face down. But I do remember smoothly and quickly picking that pizza up without slowing my stride. I awoke at 4am, fully clothed on top of sheets, curtains open, TV on and Aria welcome music playing, empty pizza plate on the bed.

Pizza Rock - Went here for happy hour one night and had a great meal with good service. This restaurant is much larger than I anticipated and from what I could see during the week, they are doing well. I enjoyed personal Cal Italia pizza ($7) which was delicious. They have a good selection of imported and craft beers with what I think is reasonable prices. I enjoyed an Stone Arrogant Bastard and a Brother Thelonious. Good wifi had me spending about two hours eating a drinking and getting everything I could from the wifi. This is for sure a place I will return each trip

Binions Cafe - I still can't get enough of this place and ate here three times, the Club, Burger and Chicken fried steak, all were perfect. Due to renovations, the cafe was housed downstairs in the old coffeeshop. It was great to see a part of Binions I have never seen and find out which booth Benny Binions basically set up office. I did miss watching the cooks while sitting at the counter, but that will be back soon.

American Coney at the D - Ate here more times then I should have, but the food is pretty good and it is very quick! I enjoyed a coney dog, three gyros and two orders of cheese fries. Noo, not in one sitting! over the course of the week.

Gambling - What you all have been waiting for

    Book and Stage at Cosmo
I love this bar, it is second only to the Boar's head bar for me, and it pains me to say that it is losing some of its luster for me. Bartenders Jenny, Heather and Jai are gone, leaving the wonderful Kalama who may also be leaving after another year. The cocktail menu hasn't been updated in awhile and the beer list continues to shrink. Although I never win here, I still enjoy hanging out and having some drinks. Its great for people watching and they treat everyone like high rollers. Hint: They have Lagunitas Maximus, but its not on the menu!

You have changed the way I feel about IPAs:
    087.jpg

Blackjack Crawl and the Downtown Grand - This was probably my drunkest night (always on the second night). I thought I would be fun to do a blackjack crawl on my first day downtown, giving me the chance to go through all the casinos and see what's new and just get that great "I'm back downtown!" feeling. $20 at each casino, I wish I could remember some of it.
I got downtown around noon on Sunday and had to wait to check into the 4 Queens. I played VP at boar's and then at Chicago brew in 4Qs. I had about 4-5 beers at MSS and about the same at Chicago along with about a 5 oz pour of Knob Creek. I don't even know where I started the crawl, I think at Four Queens after check in. I tried to note where I played and my results, but the order in which I visited the casinos made no sense.
Eventually I ended up at the Downtown Grand, and took to looking around a bit, I remember some of this. The place was pretty dead and I played $10 bj losing both hands. I don't support their VP paytable decisions, but ended up at the furnace bar anyway, and if I recall the 25 cent JOB was 8/6, I know I looked closely at the paytables, probably with one eye. The first bartender who I first talked with was a complete dick to me, I asked if they had Sapporo as I had read and he was very short with me. I asked a few more general questions and he basically just walked away. I think it was the end of his Jerkface's shift. Next Bartender named "Guy" came along and was a really nice dude, we chatted and I ended up playing for about an hour having some strong Wild Turkeys. This is where we end this story, cuz I don't remember anything else. Second morning in Vegas, second morning I awake at 4am fully clothed on top of the sheets. I found this on the bedside table:

    058.jpg

I had no idea where this came from or what it was at some point. Two days later I found a business card to the Florida Cafe behind my bedside table. I remembered that there were some food stands set up on third street and one was this cafe. And I remembered some delicious kebobs, and I remembered eating this and going to sleep at 7pm.

Black Jack - Played lots of Blackjack and Free Bet Blackjack at MSS, Golden Gate and the D. Freebet can be alot of fun, and your money can last awhile assuming your getting a greater than average amount of splits and double downs. I did best playing Double deck at MSS doubling my buy in a couple sessions, I also just enjoy playing there.

    Paigow, 3 card and Holdem
I think you need a certain mind set to play Paigow meaning you can't have anything better to do at the time. If you do, you're gonna want to go do it. Paigow, as much I love playing, can be boring. I was also disappointed to find out that Golden Gate has removed their Paigow table, this was always my favorite place to play. I played some 3 card and Holdem at Golden gate, I like playing three card but you can lose very fast. One of the dancing dealers convinced me to play some Holdem (pit game) so I gave it a go, wow what a money sucker. I was dealt Aces on my second hand and I think I won $10 on that hand, that doesn't seem like a very substantial win when your dealt the best starting hand.

    Video Poker
I had some great hits this trip, better hits than I could have ever expected. Unfortunately my first Royal Flush was not meant to be, but my time will come soon enough, and then I can finally stop playing this fucking game.
I spread most my play between Book & Stage, Chicago brew pub in 4Qs, MSS Boars head bar and upstairs at the D. I really just want to play somewhere I feel comfortable with good drink service, pay tables be damned (I can't believe I just said that).... I take it back.

VP at the D - I had a ACG coupon for the D promising the potential to earn $100 in free play I only needed $10k coin in, that's a lot of quarter play! So on Monday I set out to play my heart out at the D. This day turned out to be one of those miraculously wonderful days where I just couldn't loose. I was up early in the morning and ready to push some buttons! The D players club stated very clearly that they opened at 7am. I needed to hand the coupon in before I started play, so I waited and waited, talked to a few employees who basically just shrugged and said she must be late. At 8:30am they opened up, 1.5 hours late. In the mean time I had some breakfast and played Freebet BJ, winning $50 (take that tardy D Players club person!).
Thanks to a VMB member who alerted me to the NSUD machines upstairs I headed right up there. I started at quarters, parleying to 50 cent. It wasn't too long before I was dealt 3 deuces, closed my eyes, wished upon the Sigma Derby and drew the forth deuce!! This was my second deuces hit ever and I just sat there in awe! $500 to pad my pocket and play my heart out. Knowing that it would still take a lot of 50 cent play to reach $10k coin in, I parleyed yet again to $1, (a savvy Royal Flusher play, I must say) and played for a couple hours at this level, eventually cashing out at $700 ($600 profit). I played on through out the day at the D, at some various money sucking slots and some Bdlx and more Deuces winning another couple hundred.

    065.jpg 071.jpg

The next morning I went back to the D club to see my coin in, and I got back $90 in free play ($9k coin). I am hoping this level of coin in within one day might increase my offers, as I really enjoyed playing there. I took the $90 free play and the bonus poker machines across from check in, and hit Aces and another quad for a $200 profit! Thanks Mr. Stevens!

VP at MSS - My happiest of happy places
The Boar's Head bar (BHB) is simply my happy place, anytime that I felt blue or was bored I just walked over to MSS, took a seat at the BHB and all was instantly right in the world, win or lose. It was is always great catching up with Jose, Oleg and Elinda. One morning the bar was showing Olympic Figure Skating, at first the bartenders, waitresses and 4 or 5 VP players paid no attention. 15 minutes later, we are sitting on the edge of our bar stools, eyes glued to the TV cheering and cringing to the ups and downs of figure skating.

On one of the days I was fortunate to meet Downtown guru Joe and his lovely wife at MSS and then later that day at Chicago Brew Pub in 4Qs, nice to meet you Joe! I'm pretty sure he thinks I was stalking him. I played a lot at BHB this week and had some good hits, I get to keep the blue card for another year. I try to stick to JOB, but I get bored, so I always find myself pressing the more games buttong and choosing Bdlx or DDB. This week it worked out! I hit back to back quads with the second being Aces with the kicker. On my last day I was dealt 3's and nailed the kicker, man its awesome being dealt that small quad, waiting in anticipation to hit the button and draw that kicker!

    102.jpg 103.jpg 109.jpg

Treasure Chest Poker at MSS - I have had a very trying relationship with this game, meaning I've been trying to get a quad on it for 5 years. I sure I have thousands of coin in on these machines at MSS in efforts to be able to choose my chest. I am ecstatic to stay that it finally happened, I got that damn quad! On day 1 Downtown, within 5 minutes of playing I held a pair 3's and the other two filled in. I played a few more times and grew to really enjoy the game and all the noises, and by weeks end I had hit 3 treasure chest quads, and selected 140 coins every time.

The pic shows I also held the ace, thus demonstrating how drunk I was by this point.

    056.jpg

Pickem Poker - Let me just get this out now, I HIT A QUAD ON PICK'EM!!! I had a bunch of these earn 250 points get a buffet (not nearly as good as "I put a quarter in, I got a car..."). As a note to those who use these ACG coupons, you are to earn the points on the same day, or play dumb to the Players club lady. I used one at MSS and one at the Fremont, and I actually found the Fremont buffet better than MSS. I think it was Royal Flusher who turned me on to Pick'em poker at Fremont, so I always play at least one session per trip. I played for 1.5 hours on a single $20 and earned the needed 250 points. Note: The two machines have been moved from besides the bar and placed kitty corner from check in, tucked under some stairs.

    105.jpg 107.jpg

My Apology to the Fremont Player's Club
I want to talk about a situation in which I feel badly for how I conducted myself, get it off my chest and apologize to someone. I turned in my 250 point buffet coupon to the Fremont players club and she processed it slowly and handed back my card saying the buffet pass was on the card. I asked if she was sure I wasn't supposed to get a voucher, and she shortly said it was on the card. I knew this wasn't right but who am I tell someone how to do their job. I walked to the buffet waited in line only to be told by the cashier I needed a voucher. I stormed back to the players club and as I reached the counter, they asked my name and gave me the voucher, they half heartily apologized and I said loudly and overly sarcastically "Oh that's ok, I love waiting in lines, so much so, I am going to go back to the buffet and wait in line again, its like my favourite thing to do" I shook my head at them and left. To the people who work at the Fremont Players club, I am sorry, this is not how I should conduct myself, I was just Hangry.
But seriously get your shit straight.

    Poker
I like to play very low limit poker (2/4) at the Flamingo. I like to get a good buzz on and play this game recklessly, because if you don't it's really boring as shit. I prefer to play as if my chips are on fire. I raise, re-raise, cap it, bluff, bet blind all the way to the river. This system works for about 20 mins until they realize I'm just some drunk idiot. The first session was alot of fun.
The second time I returned to play at the Flamingo, sober, I found myself at a table full of nits explaining and complaining about all the weekly promos. I hit quads! won $30 and got the heck outta there.

    Shows
Pawn Shop live - First off, don't drink and buy show tickets. I had read alittle about this show before I left and that it was loosely based on Rick's book "License to Pawn" which by the way was a fun read for any Vegas lover. I had been drinking all day and walked through the Nugget to look at the Shark tank. A guy was passing out discount coupons and it sucked me in, $25 including a drink I thought was a great way to kill an hour or so. I bought my ticket and headed to the 4Qs Chicago pub to get some more drinks in me. Unfortunately I think no amount of booze could make me think this show is funny. I was hoping it would be funny but if it was bad, that it would be a funny corny bad, but it ended up right in the middle. First off I liked the actors and thought they did really well, the story line and terrible jokes is where the play fell short for me. At the end, the real Rick Harrison came out and thanked us for coming. Although I the show was pretty bad, it was a better way to spend an hour than stuffing 20's into a DDB machine.

    095.jpg

    Activities!

Banger Brewing - I headed here right after the Pawn Shop Live show, I needed a beer. The bartender (who turned out to be a girl I had just talked to just 2 hours earlier while playing VP in 4Qs) asked what would I like to sample? my reply "All of them" and so I did, sampled about 12 beers during my visit. All of which I enjoyed. I can tell you they make quality craft beer here in unique variations, and I am pretty sure with lots of love. I was able to have a chat with one of the owners (Roberto) and he gave me a quick brewery tour, really nice appreciative guy. I bought a glass and he was nice enough to through in some stickers and a key chain bottle opener.

    096.jpg

Please refer to the above picture you will see that the bar at Banger has real candles where flame extends beyond the rim of the holder. As I was trying to pay my bill on the fancy schmancy iPad payment system, I asked the the bartender (who had long dark hair) a question about the process. She reaches across the bar to look at the iPad and brushes her hair across the candle and like a lightening flash her hair catches on FIRE!!! I can't make this shit up. A flame quickly shot up her hair and went out, she understandably freaks out. I could actually see some smoke and it reeked of burnt hair. She furiously pats her hair down and runs to the back room. I am totally shocked, and am left with my payment pad in my hand and unsure of how to return to the subject. She comes out about 5 minutes later and looks pretty shaken. I couldn't see any damage to her hair when she comes back to me. I say to her, "I know you just had your hair catch on fire, and I feel atleast somewhat responsible, I'm sorry, but I still this problem with the pad here" Paid my bill, tipped well.

Antique stores on LVBD - If you have ever been to the Famous Gold & Silver Pawn Shop then you may have noticed a couple antique store across the road. One is a true antique store called Swag with an organized selection of antiques and vintage items, the other is called Lost Vegas and is a glorified flea market junk sale, with no organization and alot of small Vegas items. If you are looking for matchbooks, coffee mugs or commemorative casino chips being passed off (and priced) like the real thing, then Lost Vegas is the place for you. Ok, I wanted to buy a Sands mug, but disorganization and clutter causes me to become nervous and anxious, I lasted about 4 minutes in this store. I think there may be some gems in here, but you would have to get the guy to open a case for your to rummage through piles of junk to find it. I did buy a Tropicana Casino Chip from Swag and had a nice chat with the owners.

Downtown Container Park - Took a stroll on a fine day down to the Container park. I like the new concept and it was a great distraction. I noticed a good mix of tourists and downtown employees visiting for lunch. All the windows of the shops are tinted, for good reason with the hot sun, but it is near impossible to see what is in the little stores, so I found myself not really wanting to go inside. I bought a necklace from boutique store where she explained to me that it was hand made by an artist in downtown Vegas and even gave the artists name. I took it home and give it to my wife, she loved the necklace, I looked on the backside of the tag and it read "made in china".

I had some lunch at Pinches tacos, which was way better than China Poblano at about a quarter of the cost. I think the container park is a great idea for a community, I saw many kids playing with cool foam blocks and on the play equipment, parents talking, live music and good food. This place has alittle bit of everything for everyone

    Conclusion
This trip was a sort of Vegas swan song, as it might l be awhile before I return to Vegas (Sad face). In a weird messed up sort of way I wanted to get my ass handed to me this trip so that I could try to put my Vegas addiction to rest. It ended up being one of the best gambling trips in some time. This trip may have had the opposite effect, it just may have re-ignited my addiction.
If this is to be my last Vegas trip for the foreseeable future, then it left me with a good feeling, a content feeling and I leave this town on a high note!

When I got home and reviewed the pictures and saw that Ace hold on the threes, I was just like WTF dude? all that VP training and this is the shit I pull, ahah so disappointed in myself.

I feel that I have fully embraced the art of the VP parlay.

Awesome read - I love how you spend such quality time ensuring your mind stays clear (with alcohol)!

One thing I am absolutely distraught about - Golden Gate Pai Gow table is no longer - say it ain't say so! It was the only place in Vegas to play Pai Gow in a 'party pit' (other than maybe PH - but I don't like McHarrahs). I guess there just wasn't enough action???

You are making me reconsider shifting more time to Video Poker!

    This was excellent!

    Learn Bonus Deuces Wild? :evillaugh

And is that tally semi accurate? 1) how did you do detailed accounting being that wasted? 2) You were only up $28 on VP? :(

I can only hope a TR w/o my g/f looks like this one!! :drunk:

And yeah, sorry didn't meet up with you, but we were sorta going by the seat of our pants slash tried to visit a billion places (actually visited 34 if I counted right ). And my g/f may have been the most pissed the entire trip while we were walking through the D that night.

Thanks for the warning on the drink machine. I'm staying there in April. So, not only a good read, but informative. You're saving me money, and I haven't even gotten there yet. Thanks.

I try to record a note on my iphone as soon as I encur any expense or any wins/losses. The note also gives it a time stamp, helping me piece together the happenings for the TR. I can be wasted and still maintain my frugalness and noting taking ability.
I was super happy to be in the black on VP!, I have never had a profitable VP trip, its all entertainment for me.

Thanks to everyone for the nice comments

Thanks for an excellent detailed drunk TR. Very entertaining read.

Great line. I have not played PGP for years but it used to be a filler before or after a BJ session. It's not proper gambling.

A very entertaining trip report. Love the a.m. investigative work piecing together the previous evening's festivities from "evidence" on the nightstand lol

The 777 Beer at the Boar's Head is all messed up. The Bartenders were constantly complaining about the new head brewer. The high roller is much redder in colour now and has tastes different. The Red was pouring very cloudy and not clearing, I actually choose not to drink it. Jose and Elinda were actually complaining to management about the brewer.
