I am surprised at the many responses to this question. Common sense in conjunction with the fair market system should lead to "not a bad room in town"..
Evidently that falls into the fat chance file.
The worst rooms for us? there is a strong argument of which was THEE worst. but the top 3 are:
    Riviera
    the Plaza
    4 queens
Those are of the older properties.

the worst of the newer are:
    The Palazzo
    MGM
    Tropicana

The worst in customer service and genuine care for the players/customers/hotel guests:
    The Mirage…………

The nicest surprise of room quality:
    Harrahs.

    Great thread!

For me it was The Landmark in 1980.

We didn't know one place from the other so our travel agent (remember those?) booked a package with air and hotel for my first trip to Las Vegas with my ex-wife before we were married. (Din't tell another living soul, either, in case my mother should find out!) Location seemed central and the cost was within my price range.

Got put in a room on the 2nd floor of the motel section out back. Wow!

We couldn't ever get the A/C to work, so we sweltered every second. Couldn't get the curtains to close to get the room dark, and the shower stall (no tub) was so gross that we had to but the bathmat inside before daring to step on the tile. We would have left and gotten a room somewhere else, but the package was pre-paid and we couldn't get a refund, plus I needed all of my remaining cash for gambling. (Yeah, like you all haven't been there!)

To this day, whever I watch 'Mars Attacks!' on T.V., I jump up and cheer when the Martians blow up that rotten joint! And I've made my kids swear to do the same after I'm dead as a family ritual for the ages.

    Thanks for the memories!

About 13 years ago I stayed at IP for a friend's 21st birthday. His mom had booked the flight and room (there was four of us). Upon check in, they noticed it was his birthday and told us that we would get an "upgraded" room. We were pretty stoked as we navigated the confusing IP corridors. We arrived at the room and apparently it must have been one of those "luv tub" suites because it had the most awkward shower/tub that was in the middle of the one room. The tub was huge enough for about 5 people and had glass sides with one side that opened. There was mirrors above on the ceiling and above the bed. Not to mention that there was also a shower curtain that went around the entire thing... the problem with this was that the curtain was on the OUTSIDE of the glass. As you can imagine, everytime someone attempted to shower, one of the other drunk idiots would run by and open the shower curtain. The room was overall very outdated but we had a great time. I have never experienced another room anything like this, ever. Definitely a room upgrade to remember.

The most disappointing one I stayed in was the old Stardust late 70s out in the way-back. I was sooooo impressed with the Stardust casino the year before that I was expecting some kind of opulent suite or something and what I got was like a dorm room! One of the guys in our extended family called it the stalag!

The worst one, however, was the first time we stayed at the Westward Ho. The lock did not fasten securely and it looked like somebody had recently jimmied the door open with a crowbar or something. The second time at WH it was much better. I was hesitant but it was the only decently priced one we could get for a short notice trip.

I always thought that if you just added a book shelf made of construction blocks and a black light poster they could easily pass for a dorm room at University Of {whatever} except for maybe the shared bath.

But seriously, they were clean and comfortable, if not a bit small, and CHEAP! I think they were like $9.95 per day on weeknights! Plus, you could drive right up to your room. Just like Motel 6! :)

Not Vegas but I want to mention it anyway.

Hotel myself and some friends booked in Bejing. When we arrived we all realized it was a hotel we could have booked hourly. The items in the bathroom were by far the most interesting complimentary things I'd seen. :)

Mine would have to be Terribles shortly after Herbst bought it. Remember, this used to be the old Continental casino and although they said the casino and rooms had been renovated they left the rooms much as it used to be. Grossest was the sink. There was a partition coming about 2 feet from the wall, and about waist high. The "bathroom" sink was right there next to the bed and then you walked into the bathroom...a toilet and stall type shower. That was it. Pretty sparse, even for the low end of Vegas.

That being said, they've got the best kept secret in Vegas if they've kept things up. The pool area. Very nicely lanscaped with palm trees, desert shrubs, and plently of loungers and tables and chairs with umbrellas.

That 24 hr. cafe (Bouganville?) had some great food and prices as well. the buffet sucked.

Not really bad. Just lower standards. Clean enough, everything worked, no complaints. Cheap. Of course these stays were when we were newbies. I know where the nicer cheap rooms are now.

Back seat of my rental car! Flew in late when I was in my 20's, thought I would just party all night, and save a night stay. Got drunk by Midnight and had to sleep in the small little car, fuel saver car. Being 6'3 250lb's and drunk meant the worst night of my vegas life. When the sun came up I moved to the gold coast pool and slept in a lounger until about 1pm. Woke up with a bad case of tomato head and sunburnt skin.

Ah, too be young and dumb, again.

I've stayed at fifty five Vegas casinos, and the medalists for worst Vegas room are:

Gold medal: Excalibur - Filthy - dirty "Wide screen room" in a tower near the Strip. Had a nicer remodeled room one other stay in the tower near I-15.

Silver: Imperial Palace - No temp control (either on or off) made my winter stay either boiling or sweating. Ended up w/ a cold.

Bronze: Hooters - In one of the towers, room was not clean.

This might be a bit of a stretch, but my room at the Golden Nugget in Laughlin was pretty bad. It looked like a teenage girl's room from the mid-eighties with all-white furniture.

The worst hotel I've ever stayed at was a Quality Inn in Ashland, Kentucky, with coal trains rumbling past my door every fifteen minutes, day and night. My company booked it for me through Priceline, so I couldn't cancel it and move somewhere else.

Worst room was actually a suite and i did not stay in. Booked a whatever suite through a booking agent (never do this again) and landed in a strip suite at PH. Well... This suite just sucked. One bed, a pretty shitty "living room area" and when chilling out on the bed you could watch your companions step out of the shower or having a bath because there was no damn door! The tub and bath overall was nice but what idiot would design a room like this? Upgraded to a Panorama suite 2 bdr.

About 8 years back when I was living in Elko I had to come to town for maybe 2 days to conduct some business. It was springtime and the shoe convention was in town, so rooms were pretty well booked. It was either pay an arm & a leg, stay in Primm, or take a room at the Gold Spike. I took the Gold Spike for convenience.

This was the Gold Spike before renovation. It was pretty basic, but it had clean sheets and a place to shower. But that's about all I can say for the place.

At one point I needed to look something up in the phone book. When I lifted the phone book out of the bedside stand I noticed a small mirror and razor blade in the drawer, hidden under the yellow pages. I mused to myself that perhaps this was considered an amenity at the Gold Spike.

I lived through it just fine though. After all, clean sheets and a place to shower was all I really needed. But I never went back, even after it changed ownership and was renovated. The fact is that the Gold Spike wasn't much less expensive than Four Queens, Las Vegas Club or Binions at the time. There was no real motivation to stay that far off of Fremont Street.
