If you book a Southwest flight with points and have to cancel - what happens? Do you get the points back on your acccount or do you get some sort of a "point credit" that is good for a year like the cash would be if you cancelled a flight you paid for?

(Or do you lose the points completely if you cancel a flight you booked that way?)

You get the points and 9/11 security fee all back in full. Points expire after a year if the account doesn't have any use. I love booking with points, dear lord it is so easy. I book and rebook and rebook again and never miss out. Best part is, if the fare goes down, just change the reservation and you get the point difference right back in your account!

To satisfy the account use requirement, just book a leg in cash every once in a while, sign up for a credit card, shop through their site, etc...

Edit: The 9/11 security fee comes back as credit so make sure to keep the cancellation email and reuse the credit for the next flight booked.
