OK....I know I'm gonna take a beating on this one!! We were at Green Valley Ranch, on last day...on way to airport. There were 2, 5.00$ tables....only one I could get on was the single deck 5/6 pay table....normally I would not play 5/6!
I was on a minor roll when I was dealt a BJ and dealer showed 6. I said "well shit.....it pays 5/6...if I turn it over......only betting 5 bucks......Double!!" and i flipped it over after a long pause. DEaler says....."how much have you had to drink?"..."one beer" I answer honestly. DEaler loudly announces...."player doubling on a blackjack!!" Pit boss comes over for a look see.....
    Well...that is the senario.....go ahead...beat me up....
Of course....I got a monkey and the dealer busted and the fans went crazy.
Foolish or not it was a high point of my trip!!!

Did this at MSS last year on a $5 6/5 table as well. No problem, no pit critter, not even a peep out of the dealer.....and I was sober.

I lost though. Dealer made 20 and my double down card was a 3.

Don't give them any ideas! :poke:

Of course, even if such a payout existed, doubling still would have been the wrong play in the long run.

But who cares? It was the right play on that hand.

That was a very foolish play, the fact you won was lucky but does not mean it should be repeated. I've seen people hit soft 20 before(hit not DD), double a 5, stand on a 7, and of course the proverbial split of tens. If you like burning money then go for those moves as well.
Playing a 6/5 table is another issue entirely.

The first foolish thing you did was sit down at a 6/5 table....

But may also have been the least foolish one. Would have been fun to see that in person though.

Any time the dealer yells to the floor for approval, you are usually doing something significantly wrong. 6:5 BJ doesn't change basic strategy at all, iirc, since you have no decisions to make on a blackjack, except collecting your shorted winnings.

Also, when you double on BJ, and the dealer gets a multi-card 21 as well, don't you push?

Don't expect any applause after everything you did wrong. At $5 a hand, I guess it doesn't really matter.

    According to this http://wizardofodds.com/games/blackjack/appendix/9/1dh17r4/:
he lost $2.60 on average with that move vs. taking the sure $6 win, but hey, they gotta keep the lights on somehow! :evillaugh

He sat down at a 6:5 game in a hotel heaving with decent low limit BJ. He doesn't care about the math.

Maybe not, but informing him might save him money in the future though. And money saved = more trips to Vegas! Imo.

I was the wrong move based on pure stats. in the long run if you did that everytime you'd lose more money.

but it wasn't the long run - it was one decision and it was yours to make with your money. congrats and theres nothing wrong with having a bit of fun!

The story alone is worth the $6.

I have intentionally made "wrong" plays before, purely in the spirit of fun...well...ok, maybe not purely...
My vegas buddy & I were playing the 2-deck DAS game at LVC a few trips ago, and as I flipped over my 6-4 to double against the dealer's Ace, I announced to the table-at-large, "We're on the 'no-fear' tour tonight!". Drew a 10 & beat the dealer's soft 18.
(What I didn't mention at the time was that the deck was pretty 10-rich after counting my 6 & 4, and I knew the dealer didn't have a ten in the hole...so it really wasn't all that brave!)
But from that point on, for the rest of the session, anytime one of us doubled 10 vs A or 10, we would both declare, "NO FEAR!"
Had a blast! (and we both won the session).

You want people to applaud you for making a lets say, less than educated move? :rolleyes2: Although it worked out in the long run you are the type of player the casinos like....people like you are the reason 6/5 tables are becoming more prevalent in the casinos...:confused2:

Just by you posting, you know it was not the correct play.

But I don't have a problem with people doing the wrong thing when they know it's the wrong thing. You were being entertained by doing the wrong thing. You pay for entertainment. You were "paying" more to do that move, but you were getting a higher level of entertainment out of it. A bargain as it were.

Every now and then, when I am caught up in a hot crap table, I will make a bet in the middle. I know all the prop bets are stupid. The wrong thing to do. But it is entertaining and I am willing to pay for it sometimes.

I just can't handle it when people are doing stupid things and they don't know any better.

I don't mind when I see people doing it at the tables...but when a friend tries to argue with me that "playing blackjack using the never-bust strategy is the most effective method to play the game", or the "I bet the Field because there are so many numbers out there!" proclamation, I try - I really try - to get them to understand that they are mistaken!

My brother constantly tries to tell me that using a betting-progression is the only way to win any real money playing blackjack...and on every trip when we've been out there together, I somehow manage to do far better than he does...yet he always shrugs it off saying something like "you were just lucky" or "I just got bad cards" or "You call that a win? $200...big deal!"

THAT kind of stuff drives me crazy!

    just relaying a story!

I knew it wrong. It was fun....it was at 5 dollar table with no heavy betting......the table was having fun and and enjoyed it( in fact they were in on it....we discussed it before I did it). I'm not looking for approval...I'm relaying a story. I will not do it again.......did you notice I called myself a fool in the title??

I think that was his point, he knew he was doing wrong but didnt care, it was a $5 hand! He was going home and thought why the hell not, makes sense to me. I doubt he does this as a religion or anything!
