Taking a trip in June (going to be hot). I get to play just one course: Wolf Creek in Mesquite, or Rio Secco in Henderson. I know that the Rio is closer to the strip etc, but location is of no concern. Just trying to decide which course is "better". Thoughts?

Closer? Mesquite is 80 miles north.

Wolf Creek is a far higher "ranked" course than RS and it is an otherworldly play. Tough. Everyone should play it once. Service can absolutely suck up there.

If you want to head north, consider Coyote Springs and save 20+ minutes of drive time.

Thank you. Sorry didn't mean closer, just saying that the drive does not factor into my decision. Just trying to play the best course (although I have heard great things from both) out of the 2 using other's opinions.

Taking Shadow Creek out of the equation, Wolf Creek is the consensus "highest-ranked" course in the larger area; I top-10d it, not at the top. RS isn't close to the best course even in Vegas. It doesn't suck, certainly ranks as an upper tier, but it just has too many so-so holes that keep it from the top.

I think Cascata and the Paiute courses, Coyote Springs, to name some, are better plays than WC. But as I said WC is rather bucket-appropriate.

If your only two options are Wolf Creek or Rio Secco, get that Packard running and head north on the 15.

Wolf creek is amazing. Rio secco was great too. You do have a chance to win a million dollars at rio secco, with their million dollar hole. I would go to wolf creek....Paiute is great to(wolf course), however I think the people that work at Paiute are a&@holes. They are not the friendliest!

I'm playing Rio Secco on Friday and Saturday this week so I will post a quick review early next week.

I am playing RS next Tuesday (MardiGras) and I'll either verify or rebut your review.

As far as the OP's original choice, I would play WC. I have played many, many of the courses in the valley and beyond many times. I played WC once. Been there done that. It's definitely one of a kind but too many blind (tricked up?) shots. And no full range to warm up on after the 80 min drive. Lousy service too.
RS is ok, but several courses are better for less money. And, with all the choices and RS's cost, why would one play it 2 times on a trip? I wouldn't do that if I had a room above the pro shop.
It would behoove any poster with a question to take Ken's advice. He's played 'em all and makes his living doing what he writes about.

Free is the answer to your question.

    Well thank you, Malibu.

Hey, "free" always muddles any equation. I might actually return to Bali Hai if someone picked up the tab, for instance. And while I have, and would, pay $500 to play Shadow Creek, I wasted my $500 doing that at Wynn.

Rio Secco always has received a lot of spin like anything else associated with McHa$$ah'$ due to the reach and breadth and depth of the Total Rewards program. And having Harmon there does not hurt. It certainly isn't a dog patch, and remains one of the better plays in the region, but conditioning over the years has gone through wild swings, attitudes have been ever present and there frankly are just some dumb holes out there.

Pebble can rock the list with a few less-than-gold-medal holes. Few if any other places can.

It's hard for a lot of folks to get their arms around the golf market in the West, and notably its pricing. One good thing about the recession is Vegas, for the most part, had to pull its head out of its ass and pretty drastically adjust prices. Hawaii, Scottsdale, the Coachella Valley adjusted, as well, but no one needed to do it as much as Vegas and no one did it as much as Vegas.

When you look across the Golfosphere and a place like Paiute pops up at $99 late morn, that is some damn value.

Great. 82 consecutive days without measurable rainfall in LV and it's supposed to rain both days I am there to golf. WTF?

Like Ken said, when is my tee time?

As far as Vegas golf goes, Paiute really is by far the best value.
They originally were going to have a hotel-casino and one more course (4 total).
I feel sorry for the guys out at Coyote Springs. Nicklaus Signature track, with many courses more planned and 1000's of houses etc. and now this class project is just out there. Fantastic range and greens are kept remarkably sweet.

There are a few funky anecdotes floating around about when Harvey lost that place.

    This is an FYI....

We played Wolfcreek a month ago and reported (here somewhere) the greens were unplayable. The (condescending) staff said when we booked they were "not pretty, but playable".... totally untrue at least by my standards. They must have agreed because after the turn, we complained (but not asked for refunds) that they gave everyone in our foursome $25 gift cards for the pro shop. Not much, but it was classy enough to shut everyone up a bit. We found out later all the groups behind us also got those gift cards. A week later we heard Wolfcreek was closed due to the condition of the greens.... all that happened in January. Hopefully by now they have corrected the green problem.

Would be nice if someone has a current update of the condition of Wolfcreek. I'd rather hear it from someone here opposed to their crack staff in Mesquite.

BTW, the course up there that really impressed me was Conestoga.. you may want to give that a try.

Just in case the OP has not made up his mind I'll throw my two cents in. I am just going to say what has been said.

My group was very disappointed in Rio Secco. About the only reason they could get higher rates than some other comparable courses has been mentioned; Butch Harmon taught Tiger there. Ooohhhh! Be still my beating heart. yawn. We get much more milage out of the experience by reverse bragging about how dumb we were to pay that much than we do with a "we played where Tiger played" statement.
We were even more disappointed in it when they wouldn't do a little customer service and go back and pick a wedge up for one of the guys who knew exactly where it was. So "poor customer service" came into the mix as well as feeling we paid too much for an average (Vegas-wise) course.

Wolf Creek. Do it. Our group of 16 golfers to a man said it was the most dramatic course they ever played, and this group has gotten around. Dramatic does not mean fair, or playable, just stunning landscapes and layout. Sorry to hear about the greens. That would definitely affect my decision. We have played it twice though. Both times top notch conditions.

I saw on Wolfcreek's website that the course was scheduled to reopen today, March 13th. I am considering driving up there for a round when I am in town on Friday, April 11th.

They also posted a bunch of pictures on their Facebook page and the course looks like it's in great condition, but that could just be select holes and the rest of the course could still be bad.

If anyone gets a chance to play the course before April 11th please comment on the course conditions.
