My thoughts on the Downtown Grand

My gf and I went there late last month.We did not stay,but went for the sign up promotion.I got the $3 and she was lucky to get $132.She played thro in VP and cashed out at $150.Bar service and vibe were nice.We will be back.It`s nice to see DT on an upswing.

 

I could never understand that half glass thing with the tub. I visited europe last year and encountered that in a few cities. I have no idea how to keep the water from splashing outside the tub, I pointed the showerhead to the wall but some drips still went on the floor. In the end the bath mat ended up wet or soaked.

Marskind was also correct about 'scary' versus 'cautious'. The walk from the FSE to the DTG could possibly be scary for some later at night but mostly you just need to take a cautious attitude as most of the time the walk is relatively safe.

Thanks for the photos, marksind. In my opinion, the bathroom sucks....

But overall it seems like a nice property, worth a visit.

 

Last week when we were there for two nights we had a premium room reserved. The desk gave us a corner on request. It was in the building across the street, which bothered me a little until I processed in from the point that it was still a shorter walk than at any strip property, lol.

Great upside for me, when checking in I asked if the rooms had refrigerators, the desk didn't even hesitate when responding " I'm sorry they don't, but I will have one sent to the room right away comp". At least for now they have the service thing down, hope it keeps up!


Downsides, only one trash can in the room (in the bathroom). A small thing, I know, but what would it take to fix? And Why in Gods name would they not have valet/bell at the entry by the desk, so you don't have to schlep your bags through the casino??

 

the $20 thing

hey guys im from the UK and thinking of booking this hotel for 8 nights in April with my wife we are both early forty's and to be honest we don't gamble much but ill give it a go while im there my question is the $20 thing worth a try here? would you say id be better here than on the strip as the strip looks mad all the time and whats the deal with the parking and tipping the valet thanks in advance Jason

 

Is this your first Vegas trip? If so I would suggest spending at least part of your trip on the strip. It's a one of a kind experience. Perhaps 4 nights strip/4 nights downtown or something like that. If you've been to Vegas before then disregard this opinion

yes its our first time in vegas but the hustle and bustle of the strip i have a rental so i can go at any point would you base yourself downtown where on the strip would you suggest to stay are the the 5 stars worth it any other advice would be more than useful thanks jason

 

Generally speaking you shouldnt have to pay to park anywhere in vegas, downtown some do charge but several dont. as far as tipping the valet goes, you usually tip when you pick up the car, not on dropoff, you dont have to tip of course . Vegas people are aware that alot of foreigners are poor tippers(not accustomed to it)

 

TFK...were these all shoe-games, or were some of them two-deck? And, if so - were the two-deck games the same rules as you mentioned in your original post? (DAS, RSA)

 

I don't want to hijack this thread, I would suggest going to the Strip forum, there's all kinds of talk about strip casinos, where to stay, etc... My personal opinion is to stay on the strip part of your trip since it's your first Vegas trip. But that's up to you. As for downtown, the reviews in this thread of the DTG are good. Golden Nugget is another good DT choice.

 

They were shoe games. There was a double deck table though, if I remember correctly it was $25.

First trip from the UK? Stay on strip. There is nothing quite like your first time on strip.

 

I stopped by here last week. I walked right past the casino - thinking it was a separate casino.

I was happy hitting 1000 quarters on Wheel of Fortune. That almost NEVER happens these days. I got out of there before I could lose it all.

If *I* was the owners of the Grand, I'd have the block between Fremont and the hotel lit up like some of the car dealer lots where I'm from. They are almost blinding at night.

Speaking of blinding... some of the new slot machines almost require sunglasses!

 

We stayed DT in Nov/Dec for a week. Unfortunately, we never made it to the Downtown Grand. We remembered on our last night when we were walking down Fremont.....it was late at night and I just didn't feel comfortable walking the distance - it seemed a bit dark.

Will be checking it out next visit, though!

 

I was saying to my wife that the DTG needs a giant neon sign or something similar. They need something that draws people away from Fremont and up 3rd. Also, more lighting on 3rd might help, as we see some people are still leery of leaving Fremont, even though 3rd is just as safe as under the canopy.

I was thinking that maybe they should make a 'mini' canopy from the FSE to the DTG, that way they can set up vendors and open the place up like the FSE. Yeah, it will probably be expensive but it may be a draw to go to the DTG or the restaurants and bars in the area (spike too). While the walk is relatively safe to the DTG there really isn't a draw to get people to the DTG.

Right now they sometimes open up something on that side (like during march madness, they put up a bball basket but I think the basket is probably 20 feet high) but usually doesn't go very far towards the DTG.

But then with the new stuff going on at fremont east (container park, clubs, etc.) I'm surprised that they haven't discussed extending the FSE over to that side. (probably too expensive and not enough places to foot the bill/monthly bill).
