He had a month old ticket in his pocket.
Looked at it.....he played the "powerplay"
on his Powerball ticket.....and thought he
    won $20.
He handed it to the lotto machine person -
and the woman's mouth dropped -
she got all excited, too !
She said, "I've never seen this high amount !"
My FIL saw the readout and noticed a few more zeros.
    He won $20,000 !!!~!!.........not $20.

    Nice ........:nworthy:
Guess, they won't be hittin' me up for cash for another month.
And like the good gamblin' junkies they are --
they headed straight to Atlantic City, the next day.
    ugh....

Wow, that's a lucky surprise that I'd like to get.
Biggest lottery win so far was 30$, maybe next time it's 30,000$.

That is very sad. Just saw this happen to one of my best friends. Gave his parents money every week for god knows how long and they ended up hitting our local Oregon lottery for 250k. After taxes and everything they blew the whole wad in under a year. Never gave him anything and are now mad he doesn't want to supplement them anymore.

Good deal for your FIL. That had to be a happy surprise. Back in August, we hit 5 of 6 numbers on the Florida Lotto for $5,426. That was quite a surprise for us.

That IS just sad. Shouldn't have to teach your parents financial responsibility after all these years.

I drifted away from a friend after a discussion we had about the lottery, the powerball was huge and we were talking about what we'd do if we won, etc, and I asked him how much he would give me if he won, he said nothing, why would I. I said jesus, I had you penciled in for at least a few hundred grand(enough to pay off your house and debt, etc). I really bugged me cause he was dead serious, friends for 30 years and he wouldn't give me a dime, even though it was all BS cause neither of us are ever going to hit the lottery, I never thought of him the same way.

Merlin I agree with your choice. I don't know him and he sounds like a dick.

I was his best man too, lol, I think my exact words were "you mean to tell me if you won 100 million you wouldn't give me a dime". I always figured if you hit it big you had to share at least some of it with your family and friends, right? otherwise everyone will hate you.

Large sums of money make people do very strange things.....my rule of thumb is I don't count on any family member or friend to give me anything if they win the lottery.

Never ever give your tickets to clerks to check. All stores have terminals to check your tickets. Or, go to web site, or paper.
Then, write the amount won on the ticket.

I had once picked up QD tickets from the trash, and cashed 'em in for $720.
A good T5 for the day, a scratcher for $15, and loads of credits left in machines.
People just dont check their tickets.

Nope, giving large sums of money to friends and family will cause everyone to hate you. Those who got money now view you as a paycheck and those who didn't will resent you even more. Your buddy may be on to something.

It's a very tough situation when you start talking about life changing amounts of money.

I wasn't hoping to bum money off a lottery winner, neither of us won a thing. I was more looking for a reciprocal agreement that if we ever did win, we would at least take care of the other to a certain degree. To me it would be a no brainer if I won a crapload of money to share a little bit of it.. I'm a fairly typical middle aged man, I really only have a few close friends, not dozens. Heck, I'd be more likely to want to share it with friends than family, some of my family i dont even like that much.:wink2:

Anyway, when he said that I thought that I guess we weren't really as good of friends as I thought.
