next trip I plan to spend more time on VP than slots. are there any VP 'tutors' that will actually meet with you at the casino and 'teach' you ins and outs?

now, I'm guessing that, if this was available, it begs the question 'why would they offer that when they could just play themselves?' - good point.

is it even worth it? obviously I could practice online, and I have. basically I'm 99% correct on all my decisions - if not 100%.

the thing is, i dump tons in slots, and yea, the jackpots are higher, however, it's a total crap shoot. seems, based on reading, that vp is somewhat like bj where you have more 'control' over the outcomes.

    thanks in advance for replies.

If you are 99%+ correct on your decisions when using software at home, is there any need to hire someone to tell you what to do?

There are some other things I could think of (examining paytables, strategy differences between games, and maybe some other things), but none of them sound like worth hiring someone over. You should be able to find a decent start searching the net. If trig's 99% accurate in selecting the best play already, then he is likely playing close enough to optimal that extra training on how to play won't help much.

There are a couple of video poker books out there, but I never really have read them.

Also if it fits into your schedule trig, you could go to one of Bob Dancer's free classes at South Point.

I am sure you could find someone willing to take your money but you will pay far less for some software and practice. Plus, you can easily take a sheet of paper that will tell you exactly what to do. Eventually you won't need the paper. The fun part about VP is you play at your own pace so if you need a minute or two to view your hand and determine what to do no one will be rushing you.

I would be happy to sit with you, drink a few beers, and be your coach for .5% of your total profit. I play some $5 VP, but it would be a fun experience to hit up the $25 VP and $5 10/50 play VP.

    I practice video poker at
    http://www.freeslots.com/poker.htm
BUT... I get bored playing videopoker unless I play the penny 100 games at $5. a whack... that way you get a 100 games at once... and it does not seem so slow.
    ---
Last year I wanted something to play when the slots were not rewarding me so I learned to play or increased my learning on the following games...
    ---
Pai Gow Mania at The D was fun... there is no site for the mania version but that is just some side bets... the basic pai gow game can be practiced at...

    ---
3 card poker can be played at
    http://www.3-cardpokeronline.com/
    ---
At the 3 card poker site it gives the option after you press "Deal" to check "Enable Advice". Under more games you can press to learn the games of Let It Ride, Mississippi Stud etc.
    ---
I already was pretty good at blackjack, but I got up to speed for the visit by practicing at http://www.hitorstand.net/game_m.html
    ---
When I was playing for 6 days between Christmas and New Year's, it sure helped me keep upbeat as I switched between Pai Gow Mania, 3 Card Poker, Freebet Blackjack and slots. I never got bored at all and although the trip was not a winner this time, I did not lose all my money and I had a ball!!

You can take or leave this idea. But, my husband learned to play video poker at the Flamingo the day after Xmas on our first trip. I wasn't feeling well all of a sudden, so he sat down at some machines by the entrance to the ladies room. They were video poker being played by a couple of elderly ladies. One was pretty aggressive, playing 2 or 3 machines, drinking black coffee and smoking a cigarette with her feet up on her walker. My husband is pretty shy and quiet. She started coaching him, unsolicited. I guess I was in the ladies room a good 20 minutes. She could play all her own machines, coach her friend and coach my husband without batting an eye. My husband got smacked on the arm/shoulder and verbally abused by this lady pretty good. But, he did learn to play video poker. You could try sitting next to a mean little old lady who looks like she knows what she's doing.

I remember helping this guy out on 2+2 when he was first making this thing. It was buggy early on. Hopefully he found them all. At least you can play on your smartphone if you have one.

I typically practice at the Wizard of Odds site when at home.

    http://wizardofodds.com/play/video-poker/

This seems to be accurate and works on a smartphone. It's a bit slow though.

LOL...one problem is though, sometimes those mean old ladies still play wrong even if they play 1000 hands/hr. That being said, I'm willing to help anyone who asks next to me. Or offer help to someone that clearly looks puzzled.

Get the Video Poker Strategy Master at: http://www.zamzone.com and it will print out the exactly correct strategy for any game and any pay table.

At the same site WinPoker6 is an excellent play-against program that lets you choose the game and pay table, analyze any hand, compute the house edge, etc.

I would suggest WinPoker6 also. You can adjust the pay tables as needed and it will give you the correct strategy. Also keeps a log of your errors and then you can be tested just against the error log. Can also be used in 3, 5 and 10 play mode. I think the cost is around $20 downloaded.

99% eh? I'll never get there but I keep trying.

Win Poker 6 is all you need

I play 100% VP in Vegas and this has been the best tool hands down.

There is a sweet app that shows you the EVs of each decision...also tells you when you made a strategy error

Jack or Better - Video Poker Trainer

There is also one for Deuces wild and double bonus

At your level, you wont have a hard time finding optimal pay tables either
