downtown hotel with best dining options?

I'm heading back to LV next month and may stay downtown this trip. I haven't stayed downtown in YEARS.

Wanted to know the hotel with best dining options. Right now I'm looking at California, Fremont, Plaza and MSS but open to all opinions.

If you check out each property's web-page, and select dining, you can easily see all the high-medium-low options available.

Plaza has the least
California has the most , but no buffet
MSS has a good buffet , and the Triple 7 Brewpub
Fremont has a buffet, and a Tony Roma's , plus more ...

 

they are all so close that it doesn't matter which one you stay at.

I just booked at The California, best rate and full pay DB and SDB

 

It's worth noting that the Boyd casinos (MSS, Cal and Fremont) are connected so if you gamble a bit it's possible to get comps at all 3.

My favorites in the downtown Boyd range are

777 - Great sports bar, solid food, good prices, great beer
2nd street grill - Sophisticated french/Hawaiian steakhouse
MSS Buffet - Super cheap in a great setting (average food)
Redwood grille - "Nice" steakhouse, reasonably priced, solid food

 

They all w/in walking distance. ESP. the ones right on Fremont.

 

For mid-priced dining, I've always enjoyed the H20 Lounge inside the Golden Nugget, Rush Towers Lobby. Lots of great menu options and never had anything bad there (the food is from the Chart House restaurant).

My favorite is the Macadamia-crusted Mahi-Mahi. Good lunch or post late night arrival food is the East Meets West Tuna dish. I get that once per trip.

Oxtail Soup inside the California is perfect late night food. After midnight the menu drops down for the broke person, which I like.

 

As Sonya mentioned, most of the hotels downtown are near each other so it isn't very far to go to another hotel to eat.

Btw, the plaza has some worthwhile eateries. They have a McD's (good and cheap for breakfast, btw they have some senior discount specials), there is a "Hawaiian" type diner and sushi bar that serves good breakfast and other meals. They have a HHAGG if you like monster portions and the have a mexican take out place, they have a subway also.

The GN has their buffets, GG has some eateries, binions (supposedly) has their bullpen but it may be going through renovations but they still have an eatery in the back area, 4q has magnolias and other fast food eateries. The D has an eatery upstairs, coney island hot dog downstairs, McD's open 24 hours a day (not sure if the plaza is 24 hours as I never visited late at night). Even the new downtown grand has some eateries. the el cortez has their flame restaurant in addition to other fast food places (subway, dryers, etc.).

So many places to eat (and stay) downtown, you have a lot of choices and don't have to eat at the place you stay since it takes you only minutes to walk to the next hotel casino.

The Cal and MSS are popular since they are connected by a 2nd floor promenade (don't have to go outside to go between the 2 hotels) and together have a number of eateries. The cal has the Market St. Cafe, redwood grill, pasta pirate and even a "lanai" near the entrance facing binions/lvc. Upstairs they have an aloha specialties restaurant specializing in Hawaii food in addition to an ice cream shop, a jerky store and Ethel M outlet. BTW, the Cal has a breakfast buffet but no made to order eggs. MSS has their buffet and the 777 restaurant.

 

I wouldn't say Plaza has the least either, Hash house is amazing, Pop up pizza is one of my favorites as well. Oscars is a good steakhouse with a cool view of Fremont st!

 

Forgot about Oscars, they have an awesome view of Fremont St (unfortunately may not be as good with the stage in the way nowadays).

Say, where is pop up pizza located? I was there a few weeks ago and couldn't find it, next to the subway shop is now a mexican style eatery, not called pop up pizza.

 

Pop-up pizza is at the other end of the casino (by the south towers). The Asian place is good as well.

Plaza has 4 main restaurants and 4 fast food joints. That's more than all hotels downtown except for the Nugget!

The food choices are the main reason I started playing at the Plaza again (although the VP downgrades are the main reason I am about to stop...)

 

Interesting which VP did they downgrade? I hope this is not the case?

I personally like Magnolia's inside of 4 Queens. Decent food. For a quick burger, try Binion's cafe (I think that's what it's called). After that, if you smoke cigars, hit up Vatos in the rear of Binions...but that's a little off topic.

 

Thanks for the info on pop up pizza. Guess I hardly walk to that side of the casino unless I'm staying there. I did enjoy my stay at the Plaza, easy to get to the parking lot (I was staying in the south tower), free parking for hotel guests, fitness center on the 2nd floor, recently renovated. Too bad that the tables weren't friendly (and after that they instituted the resort fees).

One thing that was interesting: they have a "security" person watching the tower elevators, allowing only guests with room key cards to go up the elevator from the casino. Because I was checking out the other amenities I noticed that you can bypass security by going up the escalator to the 2nd floor (to the bingo room) and then getting on the north or south tower elevators from there. Another way to bypass security is to take the garage elevator up to an upper floor, then taking the tower elevators to go up to the rooms. Guess security is more of a deterrent for the uninformed people who don't know how to bypass it to get to the rooms.

 

One of my favorite places to grab a quick bite downtown is the deli at Binions. It's over on the west side of the property (near the poker room) so its often overlooked. However, it has some of the best pastrami, corned beef, and brisket sandwiches anywhere in Las Vegas!

I've eaten at all the restaurants in the Nugget, and I can't say that I've had a bad meal in any of them.

 

Is there a reason to limit yourself to your hotel? There are many very good restaurants DT, all within easy walking distance. The prices have always been so reasonable so not to go elsewhere isn't worth it for me. I'm not willing to just limit my play to my home casino to earn their goodwill and get a lower quality meal. I split my choices between free and better food.

My choice of hotel is based on their games.
