I really hesitated posting this, but I had a very frustrating conversation with a shift boss today at a very popular casino.

Some background. I've been in Vegas nearly 15 years and have been on 3 sides of the table (player/dealer/pit clerk) and while there are table games I won't play (roulette and carnival games) there are games I can do in my sleep.

The game that comes into play in this case is Pai Gow Poker. This casino tends to put rookie dealers on this game without proper floor supervisor, leaving the dealer to hope he/she doesn't make any mistakes, or, even worse, the players to run the game.

I don't mind it to a certain point, after all, it's not entirely the dealers fault that they stick them on the game without knowing how to set hands and proper procedures.

I have zero intention of taking advantage of dealer mistakes. I've won and lost thousands of dollars, my bets now mean nothing. But I GUARANTEE that if certain players saw a dealer making mistakes, shots will be taken.

I brought this up to the shift bosses attention today, and while I appreciate his honesty, wish he hadn't been THAT honest. To sum it up, he said that upper management doesn't care. They're not about to hire more floorpeople so they don't have to watch as many games as they do now and, in my mind, the most troubling part is that if a floorperson tries to write up a dealer, they go straight to HR, therefore the floorpeople have stopped caring too.

If he doesn't care, then why should I? As a person that knows this game, I shouldn't, BUT if there's an entire table of beginners to the game, there's just as much chance for the dealers to make mistakes and take money away from players who have either pushed or won the hand, nevermind mis-reading bonus hands.

So, there's my rant. I really hope this isn't a town wide issue, let alone a gaming issue as a whole.

Interesting, however I don't find it that different from business in general. I run into supervisors, managers and execs that don't seem to care what happens or what the results are as it pertains to their tasks, their subordinates tasks or their company and its revenue potential.

Bottom line is that unfortunately, we live in a society where many just don't care about their jobs or lack the knowledge to know any difference. Seems you've run across that scenario within the gaming industry. That's too bad and sad to hear.

BTW, the wife loves Pai Gow, so I'll tell her to keep a watchful eye out when she's playing come April. Thanks for the heads up.

This past November I had the occasion to have about a thirty minute talk with the casino manager of a very prominent downtown casino while we were watching the LV marathon on Fremont Street. One of the things he told me was that in his casino he will put the most inexperienced dealers in the party pits, mainly at BJ. This really didn't surprise me and really makes a lot of sense.

It certainly does make sense--the party pit is unlikely to attract high limit play, and those who do play are less likely to notice dealer errors.

In terms of the inexperienced pai gow dealers, if the shift manager doesn't care about errors I would see no reason not to sit at the table and exploit the situation. That particular game is especially vulnerable since the dealer has to read the hands and set the cards correctly.

Yup,that is the sentiment all over...
On the low limit games, no one really cares..they figure the dealer mistakes will cancel out with the player mistakes, so they still have an advantage.
Believe me, start putting black in action and see how fast you have the undivided attention of the floor supervisor.

Modern times. If you get written, go complain to HR or to union. Just like a kid going crying to Mommy...."he was mean to me!"

Not sure if this is a union shop, but whenever you have one, they try to Monday morning manage which does not work of course.

Very true... the positive side of that is it makes it much easier for hungry, upwardly mobile folks to compete for the higher paying positions in life.

Back in my blackjack days, there was one pit boss in an unnamed strip casino who point-blank told me he didn't get paid enough to protect the game.

At the time I was a low to medium stakes ($10-$100) card counter who played after work (still wearing my suit) and on weeekends. It was a single deck game and a few of the dealers realized that dealing deeper resulted in tips...so they did.

It was fun while it lasted. After about two tears, I was asked to take my business elsewhere. I learned to start hiding some green and black chips after that.

Very interesting replies so far, especially about the party pits. Didn't think about that one because 90% is blackjack.

Also, a little surprised that no replies are "Wait, WHAT?" But it appears that this is corporate mentality outside the gaming industry also.

Same most places, and sometimes the "underlings" do have a better way, issue is trying to get the higher ups to actually listen. Here they put the rookie dealers in the Poker room for some reason then move them to the BJ tables.

That's surprising to hear. In past years I played PGP almost exclusively at Aria and I've only ever seen 2 dealer mistakes, once a dealer miss a flush bonus when the player played a straight and another time the dealer got corrected by the computer (I don't remember the specific cards, but it was a choice between a straight and a high top vs a flush with a miserably low top and, to our delight, the computer saved us all by choosing the topless flush). Recently I switched to Mandalay Bay and I usually see 80% of the same dealers dedicated in the Lotus Room during swing shift (not new dealers). They tend to make mistakes around 2-3 AM, but generally the pit bosses watch every few hands and catch their mistakes. I see players having to request cards be pulled back from the burn tray for either an incorrect loss or, more commonly, a missed bonus maybe once every other shift. From the higher properties at least, they seem to care about the dealers much more.
