Went to my local Best Buy to get an indoor antenna as a back-up to DTV which seems to go out all the time when it rains or snows.
TV guy there told me to spray the dish with Rain X because the picture goes out because of rain or snow collecting on the dish.
Anyone ever hear of this? The Rain X said not to use under 40 degrees so that lets today out ,plus its starting to snow.
I'm this way and that about this ,anybody ever try it?

Never heard of it, but it sound plausible. A cheaper solution might be to spray it with WD-40. WD does stand for water displacement. Or, silicone spray.

Always hated going out with the broom to get the snow off.

When I had a dish I was told to put a garbage bag over it when we were going to get snow or really heavy rain. Never tried it myself but I've talked to several people that swear it works.

Ours usually goes out due to heavy wind or heavy rain, not snow or ice. Good luck!

Interesting. My dish was placed on a high corner of our house that isn't easily accessible. It's probably 20 or 30 feet from the ground. So i've been forced to let nature run it's course. Thankfully it doesn't go out often but during heavy snow we've had problems. We don't have too many issues with rain unless it's bad and very cloudy. I'll have to research this. (We have satellite internet and that likes to go out all of the time, Thankfully the TV is much much better).

A can of deicer works for me, though mine is not on the roof.

When it comes to rain, don't think it's the water on the dish, it's the rain drops falling that blocks the signal. It can be pouring 2 miles away, and dry here, it will go out.

    Bingo!

I started using PAM on my snow shovels years ago and it worked great for that clingy snow we get sometimes. Then I figured it would work on my DISH and - voilĂ .

With heavy rain the problem is not with the rain on the dish but all the rain in between the dish and the satellite in space. Nothing you can do about that. A wet dish will work just fine.

A heavy coat of snow on the dish might be a problem but rain-ex wouldn't do anything about that.

    Thanks for the feedback guys

Snowing like crazy but it hasnt gone out yet. I've got a 32 ft. extension pole so I dont think I have to get out the big ladder ,just maybe spray some stuff on the gadjet I use for washing the siding and windows. the dish is maybe 15 ft. off the ground,no big deal.
Dont worry about me Hammie,I still scurry up the dropdown stairs into the attic all the time. The only thing I do now when I use the extension ladder is have somebody foot it.

    ?????:confused2:

These are conditions with which we are not familiar in California. The sat works great, even during earthquakes.

How often do you have to reapply it?

Actually in a really heavy downpour the water sheeting off the dish screws with it.

I use Rain-X on my windshield of my old truck.
The wipers work great, in sunshine --
    then cease, when it rains.
The Rain-X allows me to see without the wipers on.
( ...only as an emergency situation - like a rainstorm
while heading home from the golf course ).

    I have Directv -
my reception only goes out when a massive thunder cell
is somewhere nearby ( in the southest direction )
Snow + rain has never been a problem on the dish.

PAM comes off the snow shovels due to use. But, I only have to spray it on my DISH at the beginning of snow season. If you get rain during the Winter (which we usually don't get) you may have to apply more frequently.
