But not the GN :). I'm just not a fan of the Nugget.

Normally stay on the strip (CP or V/P) but really want to give DT a try since I do like gambling there. Don't need anything palatial, but a nice room with a few amenities is appreciated. Ultimately, I am pretty sure I will get it comped but have no problem paying up front.

    Appreciate any tips...

I agree standard rooms very doable but a nicer suite is best room downtown after nugget. You'll get it comped I'm sure if you're playing.

Punt recommendation notwithstanding, thanks for the tips. Honestly wouldn't have considered The Plaza but will now. The D was on my radar.

Since you don't want the nugget I would recommend plaza or grand.

I recommend the suites at Golden Gate. It's not a true suite, rather a large room with sitting area but, the room is quite comfortable. I am also a fan of the decor and the ease with which one can enter and exit the property.

What nubia says about the ease of entering and exiting the Golden Gate is a really valid point. It makes the trip fun. And the décor is nice.

But it's not for everyone. The suite is great for singles or couples that are comfortable with each other. The washroom is part of the room - there's a door on the shower and a door on the toilet but it's not a separate room in the suite. It's not the best place for dating couples.

If you're looking for the BEST, the Nugget beats all properties downtown in my opinion. Since you're not fond of them (and neither am I), I think the rest of the casinos are about equal. It just depends what other factors are important.

If I had to choose "best room" after the Nugget, I'd vote MSS. But it's a little off the beaten track. It just depends what's important to you.

Haven't had a chance to check out the rooms at The Grand but if I was you, I'd check it out. Most likely, it's comparable to anything else downtown.

Plaza was quite comfortable the last time I stayed there (March 2013), but as you know - it's at the "end" of FSE, so if being more in the center of things is important, then 'theD' would be my second recommendation.
I've never stayed in a Golden Gate suite, but I really like the casino, and the bed in the "standard" room is very, very comfortable.
Fremont rooms are very 'spartan', but if you're solo & won't be spending a lot of time in the room, then it is smack-dab in the middle of FSE and getting in and out is quite easy. It's my "home casino" with Boyd, and stayed there more often than anywhere else downtown. I like it more than 4-Queens.

DTG, El-Co & MSS are, of course, other options, but I cannot speak to them.
Decent-sized room with a decent bathroom? Go with Plaza or 'theD'.

My wife and I only stayed DT once and that was over 10 years ago. We got a pretty large room with a full hot tub at the 4 queens.

Be advised though, that they played music 24 hours along Freemont, so you may want to get a room on the other side of the hotel if you're a light sleeper.

plaza is great imho, esp after the reno done about 2 years ago. easy to get to, plenty of parking, far enough from the sounds of fremont. gg is nice, but the rooms are quirky, but what do you expect from a 100 year old hotel casino. rooms can be pretty loud too, and your view consists of an alley. queens always treated me right, except once...my room was literally behind the 4 queens sign right on fremont with on of those fse speakers not 20 ft from my room window....a rough couple nights for sure. havent stayed at d since the reno, but looks promising.
