Part TR part cautionary tale ! (long)

So me my fella and my dad travelled to Vegas for 2 weeks 24/10/14 from Manchester UK with Virgin , flight was great first time we have travelled with Virgin got into town 2pmish great flight half empty plane great drink service will definitely do it again . Just so its out there it was mine and the fellas 7th time In vegas and my dads 2nd . Used presidential limos again great experience and checked in to the MGM 2 good rooms no view but to be honest we don't go to Vegas to look out of the windows
Anyway the first day/night we gambled a little and drank a lot at about 10pm we all went up to bed as jetlag was setting in we didn't make any firm plans tho I did say we would knock on my dads door if we were going back out. Well we were wide awake at around 1am freshened up and went back out I knocked on my dads door across the hall no answer so I presumed he was still asleep. At about 6:30am we decided we were done after walking down to P.H having pretty much a drink in each hotel (both sides of the strip) there and back so fair to say we were ,as we were on our way to the elevators we bumped into my dad who was wide awake and well in the mood for a good casino/bar crawl we said our goodnights/mornings and went up to our room.
Just a bit of background on my dad he's 61 but looks 50's a big well built guy in good health(diabetic but well under control with meds ) , likes a drink and will talk to anyone after finally getting his confidence back after losing my mum in 2011 (hence we took him to Vegas in 2012)
So I didn't see anything of my dad all of Friday just thought he was sleeping his hangover off as we got no phone calls or text messages . I decided to knock on his door at about 7;30 as we were on our way out for the evening when he finally answered the door he looked a complete mess I went in his room and he told me what had happened..........
Apparently he had gone from the mgm to nyny to Excalibur ,luxor,mandalay back to Excalibur and ended up in the trop all of this he remembered clearly he remembered talking to a guy in the trop at the lounge bar then Nothing the next thing he remembers is some bitch (Woman) leaving his room .At this I am horrified but that's not the worst thing when he got out of bed his room safe was wide open and empty except for his passport and wallet which was empty but for his drivers licence and credit cards .
Well I went absolutely crazy the fact he could be so stupid the fact every penny he had brought with him including English pounds had gone which was over $3000 as it was his first day . As I began to calm down we started to piece it together and the only thing we could think is that at some point most likely in the trop, someone had slipped something in his drink and that's why he had no recollection of anything from that point . This is after us warning him NEVER to leave a drink on the bar etc .
Now as we have no knowledge of how the police/security would view this in Vegas we decided not to report what had happened (my dad had money in the bank etc etc) as mostly he was embarrassed as much as angry where I was angry and feeling guilty .
The thing that annoys me most now looking back on it 3 months later is that it happened between 8am and 10am ,I just wish this "lady" would have been leaving my dads room as we were leaving ours although maybe I would have just thought he had paid for some company ?( Hey he's a grown man I judge no one )
Now I bet your thinking wow I bet the rest of their 2 weeks in Vegas was really uneventful hahaha I wish it was .......

The Life is Beautiful festival
We saw this advertised and decided we would get tickets to both days with two of our favourite bands playing kings of leon and the Killers well when I told my dad he wanted to come too ,no problems so the day after all the above happened we rolled up to will call to get our bands at about 11am and as the gates opened at 12 decided to hang around till then . Had a quick breakfast and got in the short queue . As they begin the countdown 10,9,8,7 I see out of the corner of my eye my dad start to shake and then lean and begin to fall luckily L(my fella) also see's this and manages to stop him hitting the floor we manage to get him to this corner where a security guy is sat .he jumps up and gets on his radio for first aid . A supervisor(I think) radios for paramedic now at this point my dads is slumped on a chair with his eyes rolling back in his head people stop and give us water for him (thank you all !!)
Luckily I know a bit of first aid so even though its scary as hell (and I actually thought he was dying in front of us ) I am just trying to bring him round keep him calm etc . The paramedics turn up on bikes and are Amazing!! Doug especially !! My dad is coming round at this point Doug tells us that his heart rate is very low and with him being diabetic they want him to go to hospital . Of course my dad being a stubborn fucker he doesn't want to go as "I'm fine now"
Eventually we get him to agree to go to the hospital (valley hospital) and I get to ride in the front of an ambulance never really on my list of things to do in Vegas but there you go and Dave the driver was fantastic we had a great 20 min conversation when I'm on edge I talk ...... as you can probably tell by this I'm a wordy cow lol
To get to the point the doctors at Valley basically told us that due to the drink/sun /drugs/diabetes my dads insulin levels had dropped to low causing his heart rate to drop which made him collapse so he missed both days of life is beautiful they kept him in hospital for 2 nights but thankfully it wasn't anything more serious !
For us obviously we didn't want to go to Kings of leon but my dad told us to we heard 3/4 songs and went home as our hearts weren't in it
We did go and see the entire Killers set the next night my dad ordered us to !! And they were fantastic really really amazing .
Thankfully after this everything calmed down and after 3/4 days of taking it easy my dad was fine and the rest of the holiday was awesome and uneventful lol .
Well if you read all of that fair play to you. Just to clear a few things up my dad came back to England and got himself checked(heart etc) out and everything was fine and has now met a lovely lady who will hopefully calm him down a bit
And me and L are booking our flights back to Vegas next week so obviously this experience has not put us off lol
I know this was kind of long and rambling but I sort of needed to get it off my chest as my dad swore us to secrecy and I will never tell anyone he doesn't want me to but am pretty sure here is safe to vent :Þ

I certainly hope the other 11 days were less stressful.

I did forget to add I won $400 on the last night and my fella won $600 on the night before last so we were happy lol

OMG - I can't imagine how angry you were with the 1st issue and how scared with his health problem. Bless your heart!! Happy that he is ok now and that you are planning a return visit. Good luck!!!

 

Everything you said could be absolutely be true, about something being slipped in a drink. It happens and the cautionary warnings should be headed by all. It's also possible at some point in the evening your Dad crossed over to the "blackside" and blacked out. There was a time in my 30's, and I'm a good sized guy who holds his liquor very well, (you mention your Dad is no small fry) when I'd get on a roll (yeah in Las Vegas) and the decisions I'd make after many cocktails aren't the ones I'd make sober. We call it a "runner" (though a true runner can often last a few days). At some point, you can still seem coherent to people and actually functioning pretty well, though obviously drunk, but you're blacked out. You wake up, hopefully in your room... wonder how you got there, what the hell happened and of course, check for all your body parts and then the wallet, watch, etc. The times couple times it happened to me, I can recall with clarity most of the evening, but then you hit a point and zilch. Yeah most of the time my wallet was emptied of cash, except for cash advance slips I didn't remember doing, drivers license and credit cards. The cash advance slips would help piece together some of the evening. 2:10 am Golden Nugget 3:30 a.m. Four Queens 4:20 a.m. Binions

Since those days I rarely drink anymore, except for Vegas trips and now I do them much differently. If I'm going to drink, I stay at my home hotel/casino and I don't leave the property. I also now have the "luxury" of having business to tend to in the mornings and after 2-3 hours of gambling and unwinding, knowing I need to head up to the room, cause I'm not interested in babysitting a hangover all day.

I'm happy that your Dad's OK... sure... he could've been the victim of some foul play... also could just had to much to drink and I fear that's what security or Metro would've thought as well. Vegas makes the best of us lose our minds!

 

Oh my gosh, how totally scary! So glad dad is okay!! That hospital is def on my Not-to-do list!!

When my dh was first diagnosed with diabetes several years ago, we were both learning how to deal with it. He, in figuring out the change in how he feels when his blood sugar gets low, and me in knowing what to do. First time I KNEW something was wrong, is when we were walking into a restaurant. One look is all I needed. I bee lined it to the bar and pretty much just yelled "I need an orange juice RIGHT now". just like in the movies. I've since calmed down, but boy is it scary.

Interested in what the police did with the theft.

We hear all the time about young females getting drugged, but really it can and does happen to everyone. Friends of mine, a couple in their fifties, were drugged several years back at one of the downtown strip clubs. They don't remember anything except it was the best night, physically, they had ever had. She still is like, what the hell was that?

Hate to say it ,but guys like Dad are the perfect targets,alone ,good natured just looking to strike up a friendly conversation. Security cant watch everybody all the time so you have to be on your guard or better yet bring a wingman.By posting this maybe you may be saving someone from the same fate,forget that What happens stays in Vegas .

 

I am glad your father is OK and happy, however I would to suggest that this be a cautionary tale for those with diabetes, while I would not competely count out your dad being slipped something in his drink I tend to think the alcohol took a toll on your father and his blood sugar spiked especially with him ending up in the hospital so he is a very very lucky man!!!

Your range of emotions during all the events must have been off the charts. Luckily, everything worked out ... except for the missing $$.

 

This is a tale with two stories. Just a reminder, Dad remembered a woman leaving his room and his money gone. That's doesn't have anything to do with diabetes, that's robbery. The diabetes story starts at the concert later in the trip.

Geez, it seems like the only way to keep cash is to check it into the cage or safe deposit box at the front desk. From what I've read on this board, roofies still allow you to function, like opening your room safe, but not remember who convinced you to. Good to know.

Thats the dark side of Vegas. A cab driver tried to rob me on my first ever trip. Luckily I clocked on to his plan and he didnt get any of my money! Thats another story I guess. Glad yer dads ok and you had a great trip!!!!

I'm glad your dad is ok, it must of been a mix of emotions for you on that trip after all that, but it's nice to see that you still want to go back and hopefully next time have a slightly less eventful trip.

 

Your dad should have gambled because he was lucky to survive.

Just wondering if he blacked out, how would they know which hotel and room he belonged to? Also, was the safe forced opened? If not did he simply give them the combo?

We tend to keep lots of stuff in the safe and it would suck knowing there is some simple way to pop it open.

 

Whether it was roofies or black out drunk off liquor, you are still functioning. Perhaps staggering and slurring, but you are still going. You just tend to not remember any of it, or you have bits and pieces of it. I will normally take a picture of my hotel room number before I go out. As far as safe combo, it is normally the same thing every time that I have remembered, so if I was in a drunken/roofied stuper, I could probably still rattle it off easily.

The professional women will take advantage of an extraordinarily drunk man. They will definitely target them as easy marks. And the best time to find them is typically 3AM to 6AM. This is also the time where they are getting a little desperate for a trick so they will be much more forward in their offers. It is when most of the rest of the people are asleep, and the ones left around are either seriously jet lagged, degenerate gamblers (most of the time that is me), or completely smashed and still drinking (some times me).

I know it really sucks that he got robbed like that, but it could have been worse. I refuse to talk to a professional, wont smile, wont strike up any conversation just sitting at the bar. It isn't that I feel morally superior, I have just been friends with some in my past and I know they are just looking for the money, and they are not above anything to get it from you. Including violence or robbery. I am sure he was embarrassed, but really he should not feel that bad. It happens all the time in tourist destinations across the globe, not to mention your every day bar.
