If you go to Vegas, Nothing can beat the Strip.

But food, loss of gaming odds, and hotel prices are getting very pricy on the Strip in the last 18 months.

If we go to Vegas, it has to be on the Strip, no better place to be on Vacation!

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------

But it is just a VACATION for us... Period!

Repeat... Vegas is a Vacation...not a repeat thing to do X times a year.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We can only afford .. ONE Vacation per year.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------

We are now asking ourselves, has the Strip " Out Priced" themselves verses vacation dollar value?

Food cost on the Strip are what we consider, OVER PRICED verses value.

Has anyone started considering Cruising again as a better Vacation VALUE Dollar, since Vegas has become so expensive in the last year?

We love the Strip, but they are pricing us out, and will not spend $800-900 in airfare just to stay downtown. :poke:

Stuff has really been moving up in price, or so it seems.

Drinks in particular seem to be way higher than they used to be. Cheap meals are getting harder to find as well.

We are pretty much comped, but do spend some out of pocket money, and it goes fast. Actually, the comps go really fast now that I think about it.

Eh? You have to play it smart. I found The Flamingo for $300 for 5 days. There are buffets for 2 at $45 if you look.

Also folks act like Priceline and Hotwire doesn't work or something too.

Hell I can't get the local Econo Lodge at $300 for 5 days.

Plus, there's always downtown which is still ultra-cheap. I don't $30 per night price anywhere around these parts.

That's the real issue it seems.

Folks don't wanna pay for ANYTHING. I wonder how long did the old guard think that would last?

I totally AGREE with you, it is getting really EXPENSIVE to stay on the Strip! The worst thing is that you have to pay RESORT FEES everywhere now!

Coming from Europe, I can also only afford to go ONE time a year. And like yourself, I wouldn't want to stay anywhere else than on the Strip when going to Vegas.

But NO WAY am I considering another destination than Las Vegas, I just love it TOO MUCH! I just try to keep food and drink costs as low as possible, as well as for shows.

The weeks before my trip, I look for coupons etc on the internet, so I can still enjoy a buffet (2-for-1) or a fancy dinner at one of the restaurants on the Strip (50% off).

I get my drinks from the supermarket and keep them in my hotel room, just fill them up with ice from the corridors or mix it with the slushies from Wallgreens (only 2 dollars).

Further I drink for free at the casinos and don't mind to eat at Earl of Sandwich or a grilled chicken salade from McDs for example. It doesn't have to be a fancy meal every night.

Also I don't mind to stay at the "cheaper" hotels on the Strip, I just look for the good deals (like every 4th night free etc). I don't spend much time in my room anyway.

And I try to avoid the weekends, for example going for 12 days, from Sunday to Friday, with only one weekend in between. But I wouldn't want to miss it for the world!

    Petula Clark had it right

When you're alone and life is making you lonely
    You can always go downtown
When you've got worries, all the noise and the hurry
Seems to help, I know, downtown
Just listen to the music of the traffic in the city
Linger on the sidewalk where the neon signs are pretty
    How can you lose?
The lights are much brighter there
You can forget all your troubles, forget all your cares
    So go downtown
Things will be great when you're downtown
No finer place for sure, downtown
    Everything's waiting for you
Don't hang around and let your problems surround you
    There are movie shows downtown
Maybe you know some little places to go to
    Where they never close downtown
Just listen to the rhythm of a gentle bossa nova
You'll be dancing with 'em too before the night is over
    Happy again
The lights are much brighter there
You can forget all your troubles, forget all your cares
    So go downtown
Where all the lights are bright, downtown
    Waiting for you tonight, downtown
You're gonna be alright now, downtown
    Downtown
    Downtown
And you may find somebody kind to help and understand you
Someone who is just like you and needs a gentle hand to
    Guide them along
So maybe I'll see you there
We can forget all our troubles, forget all our cares
    So go downtown
Things will be great when you're downtown
Don't wait a minute more, downtown
Everything is waiting for you, downtown
    Downtown (downtown)
    Downtown (downtown)
    Downtown (downtown)
    Downtown (downtown)

Yea, things are expensive. But I mean I guess I never was the person that participated in the $1.99 steak deals anyways.... If I'm staying at a 5 star hotel, I expect my trip to be 5 star. Which included dining, gambling and accommodations. Also these places have to make money or they are gone! I'm fine paying a premium on the strip.

But, I mean, I'm getting a 5 star hotel for $100!! Or a 4 star for $39! You can't do that anywhere else in the world. So you are still getting value. Nobody is making you have a $500 meal at Gordon Ramsay Steak. I'd pay $25 for my meal at Cheesecake Factory here, same as I would in Vegas. I mean I'm on vacation I expect to pay a premium...

I still go 6 times a year, almost always on a tight budget. Luckily I don't have to fly, but I still feel the value is there. I agree, I try to go during the week, or during off season and it's cheaper. Honestly, there is no other place I can have such a fun trip with such big variety for such little money. Any other place I want to go in the country my hotel is double the cost for something half as nice.

I do go to Vegas frequently, and it IS my vacation! If I find a good price on the strip, I'll take it, but I usually end up pretty unhappy because of the restaurant prices. They know they have the monopoly and we're trapped. So I often stay outside of the Strip. My next stay is at the Palms. I was very happy with them last time including food choices.

I think hotel prices are the only thing that is still considered a "value" in Vegas. The room prices are still a steal compared to other big hotels in big cities. It's the other things that have gotten out of control. Shows are very expensive, food is getting to be outrageous, and drinks are on the high side.

Vegas as a whole is becoming an expensive destination and not the place I grew up hearing about. I always assumed there would be a ceiling that the strip would hit where people would stop coming and say enough is enough, but we're not there yet, and who knows.....maybe we never will be.

*when I say outrageous maybe the prices are "worth" what they're charging. Maybe they're just charging what they would be charging in any normal city....just for me, a normal middle class guy, I can't afford $40-50 dollar buffets and $100 steak dinners more then maybe once a trip. Vegas isn't really a value destination anymore, it's just a place that I love that I can't afford to go to as frequently as I used too.

We didn't go for 20+ years. We are planning our 4th trip in less than a year. You can't beat Vegas (mLife). This time we are taking our kids for a week. All told for less than $2k. To go to Disneyworld would cost double with less adventure. I like the new system and wouldn't change a thing. If we had to pay out of pocket, I would definitely reconsider as it does seem pricey. But like the others have said, there are ways to save.

We go 2-3 times a year, lately only 2 times a year. We're fortunate that we've had rooms comped for over 10 years but if you want to stay on the strip doesn't the Riv have cheap rooms? I mean I know it's pretty dead but hey. Also what about Excalibur? I agree that the bigger properties are pretty expensive and the resort fees are a total rip off.

As for dining, neither my wife nor I are "foodies". On a rare occasion we will eat at a nice place but virtually all of our meals are eaten in the hotel's casual restaurant. Bellagio we would eat at Cafe Bellagio for example.

Overall, Vegas is an expensive trip for us. We typically stay 3 nights, I don't know how some of you manage 10 days!

As I'm coming from Europe, the flight is the most expensive part of the holiday. A few extra hotel nights is not so expensive, considering the value you get in Vegas. Therefore, if I go only ones a year for a longer period, I save a lot on travel costs.

Coming trip I plan to go for 2-3 weeks. Most of the days I will not spend more on drinks and food as I would do at home anyway. And for the fancy dinners and shows etc, I use the MyVegas rewards, coupons and other deals.

All together it will end up cheaper than if I would spend in 2-3 weeks on a holiday somewhere else.

Ha, parking in the DC or Baltimore (my areas) hotels run $30-$40 a day.
Vegas is free all day everyday.

This is an example of simply not getting everything free, discounted, or comped that was so previously.

I remember there was a someone posting about not getting treated fairly simply because they hadn't been in awhile and weren't offered a comped room.

The rooms were still only about $30-$50 a night. [IMG]

Also, if one wants to stay on the strip but can't get the hotel they want....stay at a cheaper one. Hell, I stayed at Riv once. It was ultra-cheap and last minute. I walked down to the main strip and Deuced it down. No biggie. The rooms were upgraded from before and it was cool to lay my head.

To do what I want, I grab groupons, travelzoo deals, living social deals, use priceline, hotwire, etc. This has covered things like the Goretorium, hotel rooms, rental cars, multiple buffets, shows, etc.

Flights go up, that's part of business. However, all flights aren't always going to be high. Maybe move the trip around to when flights are cheaper. I sure ain't going to Vegas on a certain date if my flight is $500 coach. Backed it up a day and BAM drop to $300. Also, maybe I suck it up and DON'T have a nonstop flight to save some dollars.

Vegas costs too much? No everywhere else costs too much including Disney.

The ONLY thing I'll agree is crap are resort fees (it's basically a fine print tack on) but there are options still.

This year myvegas is the best thing for me. If it were not for that I'd only be able to go 2/3 nights instead of four. I have three total comped nights not counting resort fee so I only have to buy one night. The only expensive meal I'm looking at is if I go to an upper end buffet, otherwise I'm fine with the diner or pizza by the slice places. I plan on doing some gambling but not much, lounge by the pool bad people watch. I am attempting to take more than iv ever took this time yet I'm planning on a low budget. I don't drink but one or two drinks a trip and so that cost is not there. Since I work in a casino I'm not sure I will be spending a lot of time in them, but I may surprise myself. I get more bang for my buck in Vegas than I do any other place iv gone. Heck I pay more for a super 8 in Memphis and Dallas than I do for a decent room in Vegas.

Sure Vegas is getting expensive. I remember the days of 8.99 buffets on the strip, stardust use to advertise the steak and lobster for 7.99 after 2am, most of those deals are gone. I'm afraid the Vegas strip that we once knew will be extinct in the next 5-10 years
