What are your 2014 Vegas Resolutions?

I hope to stick by my three 2014 Las Vegas Resolutions as follows:

    1. Gamble less / enjoy Vegas more. Will take long stretches / the entire day off gambling to enjoy the valley, drink w/o gambling. Last trip I had a 13 hour marathon session playing VP (California Progressive Machines - RSF reached over $3,800 on quarters) and didn't feel like gambling the rest of the trip. If I stick to resolution #1, I won't have large losses chasing on poor machines or higher limit BJ.

    2. Stay out of the sport book. Have done poorly the past few years losing money playing the horses & most sports bets. I will limit sports book play to MLB (I follow closely via deep 20 team / 25 player rotisserie league).

    3. 9/6 JOB (99.54%) is the lowest EV I will play in 2014. This means not playing machines at any CET Vegas property (I'll stick with BJ or live Poker during my comp stays). Most of my VP losses over the past few years have been playing games w/ poor pay tables.

I have strategy cards / can play three games decently (JOB, DB and FPDW) and games which I can use JOB or DB strategy interchangeably (Primarily FP Loose Deuces w/ DW & FP Bonus Deluxe w/ JOB), giving me plenty of options throughout the Vegas valley.

    $0.25 - $1 play, non spin poker, 1-3 lines:

Strip / Near Strip: Bellagio, Cosmopolitan, Gold Coast, Luxor, LVH, MGM, Orleans, Palace Station, Palms & Treasure Island.

Downtown: California, Fremont, Four Queens & Main Street Station.

Off Strip: Aliante, Green Valley Ranch, South Point, Sun Coast & Red Rock.

Will also check out the progressive Aces & Eights (100.24% w/ JOB Strategy) at Circus Circus.

If I can keep these three resolutions, I should enjoy my trips more, have a better chance at winning trips (currently just under 40% rate) / bring home more of my bankroll and avoid the large losses which inevitably come when you chase / play poor games.

1.) To only go every 3 months.
2.) To only Fly there, rather than drive.
3.) To only bring a certain amount of cash; no cards or markers.
4.) To only play at Orleans or Sams Town.
5.) MOST IMPORTANTLY: TO NOT GAMBLE ANYWHERE ELSE!

When I was younger, I would play anywhere, whereas I try to gamble only at places I am currently staying at on a comp or places I would like to get future comps (beyond low limit pai gow or blackjack casual short sessions).

I found Boyd and MILFe will send corporate offers / casino offers for the particular casino you are racking up your credits, whereas CET will allow you to book comps anywhere. I get decent offers from Orleans and will try give 4+ hours of play to Sam's Town during my January or June trip and see what happens in terms of comps. I previously was a Stardust and Gold Coast player - now I get Orleans and California offers based on my most recent play.

I dropped my markers years ago and I'm more comfortable and have been successful on most trips staying within a set budget (though I hit the ATMs thrice last trip as I could not hit anything and crashed playing $ Ult X and Multistrike at the Orleans during my 11 day trip last August/September ). Hence my need for NY resolution #3 - stick with decent / great pay tables.

    Nice thread...

I would like to continue improving the value I get for my gambling dollar by:

#1 reducing video poker play. the EV may be good, but the variance is brutal. I've had great luck the past few years, but its been primarily due to quitting while ahead and limiting number of sessions. I'd like to take that even one step further.

#2 eliminating carny play...roulette, 3 card poker, etc

#3 focus primarily on craps, playing at full "hopping" tables and scratching my gambling itch via higher bets on odds rather than hard ways, etc.

#4 enjoy more spa, pool, etc time while in vegas

Gambling is an expense, limit the activity, limit the expense. I love to gamble, but as its getting harder to find a fair play, I'm fine with reducing the play.

Take only two Vegas trips in 2014.*

    * I haven't yet decided if I'm going with the "hardcore version" (take only two trips, period) or the "lenient version" (budget for only two trips but allow myself to roll winnings, or "break-evens", into more trips). Odds are, it will be the "extremely lenient version" (say "fuck it" and somehow justify taking more trips regardless of the results).

To win Big at the Planet Hollywood high limit room at the stroke of midnight. Jarrod and the dealer crew were awesome.

    Check. Done.

Now back to the normal Vegas routine....eating unhealthy, gambling like crazy, having fun win or lose, drinking too much, and being a degenerate :)

Good resolutions Beejay! I enjoyed my trips more playing less over the past two years. I'm running out my CET comps while limiting play to live poker (they have a few decent guaranteed tournament pots and not the sharpest competition).

I took a bad hit playing high variance multistrike and ultimate x (with not so great paytables to boot) last trip. I'm not playing thousands of hours a year like Bob Dancer, so it make sense to limit play, make your bankroll last and enjoy the drinks and game vs. going through the bankroll quickly and hoping to be bailed out by a premium quad w/ kicker.

#1 Three trips this year (instead of zero last couple of years): 2 two-night trips in spring and autumn and a longer one in summer...

#2 One trip at Aria (spring); after that in lower budget hotels...

    #3 Learn to play craps...

#4 check out as many slot games as possible and find new favorites (therefore short sessions on low stakes until I find something I love)

    #5 Limit BJ play

#6 Learn to play VP (or better: learn how not to play VP badly)

Much of mine is similar... quick backstory, I took two trips in 2013 and got brutally hammered gambling-wise in each. Two trips scheduled this year, but bankroll has been slow to regenerate.

    So based on BeeJay's list...

#1 - Reducing VP play. I get all jiggy reading about VP hits and people who spend entire vacations playing VP. All I get is the variance. The negative side. In 2013 I had two hits on VP (AAAA3 on a $.25 DDB progressive in Colorado for $526 and quad Aces on a 10-credit $.25 game at the Mirage for $400). But I spent well more than $926 firing at more hits. I'm not falling into the Gambler's Fallacy that "This machine is due" but I do get caught up in its corollary "Since everyone else seems to win at VP, I just need to ride out the variance". Phooey.

#2 - Eliminate carny play. This is not a big one for me. I will play Let it Ride now and again with a buddy who loves that game, but I can easily walk past these tables when alone.

#3 - Focus on craps, and especially more odds bets than props. I love craps. And I was so guilty in 2013 of shredding my craps bankroll on video poker... I didn't play nearly the amount of craps that I had wanted to. That will change this year.

#4 - Enjoy pool/spa. They have those in Vegas?

When we go on our fall poker tournament trip, when other guys fall out of a tournament, they can go into a sports book and watch a ball game or grab a drink at the bar with no problem. But when I get knocked out, all I can think of is "I am an a casino" and I run around like Clark Griswold skipping out of breakfast to find a roulette table. I gotta learn to stop that, too.

Good idea for a thread! Especially since I have a trip next week.

    1. Stick to my win and loss limits per session
    2. Not watch any TV in the room
    3. Place my football bets on the first day so I don't have to scramble to get them in on time the morning of
    4. Eat a decent meal or two instead of a random slice of pizza or steak special
    5. Pace my drinking so I'm not hungover. Order a water once in a while.
    6. Eat at the Wynn buffet finally

For me it's to steer clear of anyone or any persons who might disrupt my Vegas vacation.

In my stage in life, my Vegas vacations are too precious for it to be ruined by anyone. The way I see it, a previous trip might be my last trip, you never know. That's why every trip is special to me.

Get to Vegas twice this year. (Going in Feb so half way done)
Try a new place to eat each trip.
Make a $100 hardway bet at Craps.
Get a W-2 at the slot machine.
Get my wife to play the $10 Blackjack table.
