Gold SPike

After UFC was all done last night a friend said come down to GoldSpike. This was a place a few years ago i thought was going to be torn down. Its a pretty cool little place with crown and jack drinks at $8 and tons of cool adult sized kid games. If you guys are near downtown and partying, this is a place to check out

 

8 bucks is kinda high isn't it? Why stop there, they should charge $15 - $20 and pretend they are even higher end.

Well,for vegas $8 is nice.

 

Basically the games mentioned above. Couple of tables people were playing fish and other card games. Lounge chairs and bean bag chairs, dj spinning inside with live band outside. They have that faux ice skating ring out back that is pretty cool.

 

Maybe on the strip or in a real club, for downtown it's really high. By "real club" I mean a hopping place with woman, not a few dudes playing video games.

 

I have some fond memories of the Gold Spike. I remember booking a "suite" there on a Saturday night. When we arrived, the 2 guys I was with were giving me really dirty looks like I had stabbed them in the back. I don't think they ever quite forgave me making them stay there. I loved playing blackjack there and the drinks were strong. For a few bucks you could feel like a pretend High Roller. The dealers and waitress were very very grateful with the constant tokes. I miss that place.

 

$8 for drinks and shuffleboard? No thanks. I'll return to the Spike when they bring back the $3 sexy blackjack.

Wait...are beers cheaper?

 

The Spike in it's current incarnation is what it is. Tony Hsiehs overflow housing for his employees with a bar and grill thats open to the public. I too have fond memories of the spike. It was indeed Cheapo Vegas' stomping grounds and I got my LV start by reading all that they had to offer and I emulated them well. Except for one facet. I actually showed up at The Spike in a stretch limosuine a couple of times. My first few trips to vegas I would always book myself a limo because it was cheaper than a taxi and more classy. Plus you could make unscheduled stops for things like in 'n' out and liqour.

You didn't need to impress anyone at the old spike. Now I feel like I'm struggling to fit in with the hipsters and $ earners from zappos.

I'm glad it's still open to the public....but I sure do miss the good ol' days.

 

It's a shame what the Spike has become. It was a great place after it's renovation, but they just could never get over the hump. Some of it was self inflicted, like hand pay slots, but I think people could never get over the stigma of the old smokey, hobo filled Spike and never gave it a chance.

Everybody was really friendly there, and it was just a fun place to play blackjack. The Spike deserved better. It really did.

I recently visited the Spike to see what the hubub was all about. The place was indeed busy with mostly youngster types (20 and some 30 somethings) hanging out with music and games and other activities.

I think the place was a reprieve from the hotels and casinos and gambling, where the younger crowd can hang out and not spend a lot of money except for drinks. Unlike the night clubs the place was open enough and not as noisy (except when the band was playing) that people can hang and have actual conversations with others. There was also nice furniture where people could sit (or lay down) and just chill out.

While it was a nice place to visit I doubt us older folk types (over 40) will visit the place much unless we want to try to relive our younger days IMHO. I visited the place once and probably won't ever go back there again since I would rather relax and chill when I get back home.

I used to love this place before they revamped it. Now its a hipster hub, that's not really my scene. I miss the cheap eats and drinks lol. Oh well.

 

Nah, the kiddies were still on their phones texting while talking to others.

To me it seems that this texting thing is causing everyone (esp the younger crowd) to be ruder and maybe even have dimished interacting abilities (JMHO).

 

I stayed at the Spike once. Back in 1994, I was a Vegas virgin, and had only played the slots a couple times in my life. We had enough FF miles on US air for free tickets for 3 of us. Back then, the internet was in its infancy, and I had no access. I got a magazine about Vegas, looked at hotel prices, saw the $19.99 rate for the Spike, and cheapo that I was [am] booked it over the phone. Now, it would have been fine if I was travelling alone, but I was with my wife, 2 kids age 8 and 5, and her parents! And we get there about midnight, and that was back when all the 'characters' hung out there. Needless to say, we moved on to the Fitz. the next day. I mean, I couldn't realistically stay there for the 6 nights I had booked, not with little kids. But I still have fond memories of that first night in Vegas.

 

Gold Spike Now

It appears they've had some success in repurposing the place as a hang-out and night spot. We wandered through last Thursday during the day and it had a coffee shop vibe with what looked to be a couple of small-group Zappos meetings going on.

Last Friday night there was a fairly long line waiting to get in, with doormen holding people back and checking IDs. Don't know if there was a cover charge, but there was a band and the music went until at least 1 am (we were facing the Gold Spike in the Downtown Grand). It was nice to see the downtown nightlife extending outward from Fremont Street.

 

Sounds like a great place...

Sounds great, except for the $8 drinks. There's a place like this in the town where I vacation, but it's an excellent, small-batch craft brewery with GREAT beers. The space is full of comfortable furniture, dart boards, and board games. The pints of beer are $4-5.

Nope, sorry, there's no way I'll pay $8 for Crown in downtown...ugh, hipster places.

 

Unfortunately that's the going rate unless ya want the neighborhood bars or private clubs. If ya go the "nightclubs" expect to price MUCH higher prices..........
