walking to downtown

Curious if it would be a foolish thing to walk from Planet Hollywood to fremont. Im not trying to save money on the cab just have never walked it. didn't know how long it would take and if its a safe walk during the day. also what things you pass by that might be something to check out.

 

It a safe enough walk, but dammmmmmnnnnnnn it's a long ways... especially once you pass Encore, there's just nothin' up there, but the Riv, then The Stat a ways past that... then a bunch of old motor lodge motels... you'll see the OG Strip Club...then lots of nothin' till you pass the Pawn Star's Gold and Silver Pawn Shop... by then you're just about into the downtown area and will pass some courthouses, etc. and then up to Fremont. Man it's a long-haul... if you're into walking' and got the time OK, but I think you'd be bummed taking the time to go past Encore.

 

Its a long walk, a few miles.

once the strip casinos end it just a bunch of seedy pawn shops, a courthouse and the things and people you would expect to see around both.

Its as safe as the courthouse/ bailbonds district in any bigger city.

I have walked it a couple of times, stopping at pawn shops and other businesses along the way. Sadly, most pawn shops now have very little in the way of merchandise. Mostly just fronts for payday loans.

 

take the bus. It's cheap and life too short to waste vacation time on a crummy walk like that.

 

That's a good walk! 4.6 miles according to Google maps. I wouldn't do it in the summer but in moderate weather it's very doable if you're used to walking.

 

That is a far walk. I have never heard of someone walking to old vegas from the strip. Taxi is about $20-25 each way.

Save your feet and take a taxi.

 

Walking is good for you but you walk your butt off in LV even if you're trying your darnest to avoid any more than necessary. Save your energy, take the bus and look at the thing or two that might be of interest out the window.

Thats a long walk i would do it till riviera/circus circus and then take the bus

 

I decided to give it a try in late June one year. Started at Planet Ho, got to The STRAT , and my shoe bottoms were melting. Cabbed it from there, and ended up with some of the worst blisters ever because of the heat coming thru my shoes. Made the rest of the trip a bummer. I wouldn't recommend it during summer, for sure. Winter or early spring, it could be done, but like others have said, nothing much to see once you pass the Riv since the Sahara is closed now.

 

I did it the other way round, downtown back to mid strip,to the Del Rey (Now fatburger I think!!) but that was over 30 years ago, it was October, I can remember thinking "not much further now" when I was,nt even half way, I think it took around 3 hours, but that was stopping a couple of times for a drink and a look around a few casinos that are no longer with us.

Good idea... though I sincerely think the route is reasonably safe, in no small part being the heavy traffic along Las Vegas Blvd. The area around the Strat north to downtown has it's share of the "ner-do wells", but a lot of the apartments they inhabited a few blocks off the strip have been torn down, when it was thought the area was gonna be redeveloped in 2006/07 then came the recession and nothing happened.

A lot of them have moved on... they go where the money flows and few people walk that route, so you don't run into many of them. Used to be the area of the Del-Mar and the Oasis (south of Charleston) brought out lots of street walkers and hence their wanna be pimps and hangers-on's, but that's all changed now.

 

Walk to NYNY and take the WAX bus downtown for $2.

 

I have a friend that is a police officer in Vegas , tells me if you value your life it's not a good walk.

 

Well that's pretty compelling and I'd agree well after dark, but mid-day I still think its fine. I've spent a lot of time in that area from Sahara up past Charleston to downtown, as I used to have an office/warehouse just north of Charleston and a couple blocks off LVB... an officer would certainly know how many calls for service are in the area however.

 

Good decision, you will save yourself a lot of time and energy.

If you really want to see what it's like you can use google maps street view and do a virtual walk. You can do it from the comforts of your home and drink as much as you want.

Also google maps is from 2011 so some of the renos (IP, Sahara) have not begun and so you will see them on your walk, it's kinda like time travelling.

 

One of our early trips, we walked Main Street from Freemont to Gamblers' General Store then crossed to the Strip. Seemed to me that this area was quite run down and there was no place to catch a cab until we got to the Strat. I didn't feel comfortable enough to try it again!

 

We walked from DT to the old Boardwalk years ago when we were younger. I'd do it just to say "been there, done that". We didn't feel unsafe, had time on our hands and enjoy walking.
