I am aware that lots of casino dealers share "tips". Meaning that all tips are pooled and divided between all dealers. My question is: If I (example roulette) place a bet for the dealer and bet wins---does this go into tips. I am trying to find a way to tip a dealer directly if and when I want! I obviously can ask a dealer on my next trip but I thought someone on board my be able to give answer.

Yes, betting for the dealer is a tip. And in most places that means you're making a bet for all the dealers since tips are generally shared.

Note: One major exception to this is live poker dealers.

Unfortunately this is true. I hate that crappy/unfriendly dealers get the same tips as the good/friendly dealers.

Is there any way to discretely tip a dealer short of getting the dealer in trouble!

Yes, wait until their shift is over and follow them to the parking lot. This could get you arrested, though. But I've seen a couple people do it for poker dealers after hitting the bad beat jackpot.

I used to work at a casino and what people would do was hand a sealed envelope saying open this when you get home. But who really carries envelopes. That is an option even with it not being practical.

    Gift-cards work.
Wait for her to go on break or the end of her shift...hand it to her in passing and say something like "this is for you...I had a great time when you were dealing", and keep moving afterwards.

I know at the Silverton the dealers keep their own tips (they aren't pooled). Explains why they have some of the nicest dealers around.

One time I was playing BJ at the Westin and my dealer went on break before I had a chance to tip him. I was walking outside to the parking garage and spotted him outside smoking. I asked if it was okay for me to give him a tip and he said it was all good. Don't know why I was so paranoid about it.

Many years ago at the MGM there was a BJ dealer that put me on a CRAZY run. I just couldn't lose. I was up $35k and right before I colored up I asked her what time she gets off. She said 7am, I told her in a very discreet way "8am, Boardwalk Casino, Front entrance, be there".

Sure enough she arrived and I bought her breakfast and handed her $2k cash. She also came back to my room.

All the tips/wins go into a box at the table. Dealers for obvious reasons can not put stuff in their pocket.

I always tip by placing bets for the dealer from time to time (pass line for craps and an occassional hardway). If the bet loses most dealers will say "thanks for the bet". If they don't I don't do it again.

When playing BJ, I give the dealer a choice. I always ask them if they want the tip straight up or if they want it wagered. Almost always they want it wagered.

For me it makes the game a little more exciting when I am tipping. I want the both of us to win, the dealer wants both of us to win, and even if I lose the hand I usually get a thank you for putting something out there for them. And if I can coax others at the table to tip their dealer as well then the more the merrier.

This is exactly how I do it and my thoughts on the process as well. I would certainly like to be able to insure that my tips went just to the dealer in question, but I realize that is not the way the system is set up, for the most part. I have heard stories of people circumventing that, but I don't play large enough for it to be an issue for me.

That's my only regret about tipping...its "pooled", and its probably 80/20 (shitty vs good dealers)
But really, I only tip in hand shuffled BJ, the rest of us, the dealers just are there to watch and have no interaction with the result.

I HATE how all the tips are pooled together. The dick head dealers get to benefit from the dealers who actually care about their job and are fun to play with. If I'm at a fun table but a shitty dealer comes in, I'll just sit out till they're done. I may take an extra long piss break, or step back and have a smoke or two.

I use to always ask too, but I came to the conclusion that 99% of the dealers want you to wager it so I don't even ask anymore.

Here is coming from a dealer perspective.

Some nights I wish we did not pool the tips but in reality it's the only way to make it fair for all and it really does average out. I don't pick what game I am going to deal and by nature some games have very few tips coming in, especially on my shift since I am on grave. If your on that table or, for instance today when I was on three card poker and it was dead six of my eight hours I would have went to work for next to no money while the cute girl with poor attitude dealing blackjack made a few hundred just for being cute. Sure it sucks sharing with the asshole dealer who does nothing to earn tips but there are nights he still makes more than me, and I usually go out of my way to make it fun for rye players because he maybe on a hot game.

As for direct tip over betting for the dealers, at my property if I am asked which I prefer I am suppose to take it since it is pooled and therefore not my money to gamble. Typically I prefer the direct tip anyways since it seems that is the time the players lose their hands. Actually I like it when I'm dealing a game like three card and the player gives me the choice of what spot I want the bet placed on since I look at what they hit the most if and it works out. I have a few player who won't ever bet for us just because they would rather ensure the crew gets the money and not the house.

As for giving direct tips to dealers, I know at my property it's nearly impossible and if caught the dealer would be fired. First if by chance you used the envelop method as mentioned above, I'd have no place to put it as I cannot place my hands in my pockets on the floor. At the table I can only take cash which after changed must be dropped in the box, I can only take chips which either goes in the rack or the toke box, I can only take players cards which goes on a designated spot on the table. Anything else and the eye in the sky gets suspicious and starts making phone calls. If you meet me on the way to the stairs and you are observed handing me something it raises flags and you can bet someone will be watching. I can accept gifts from players but no cash or chips and anything over a specific and rather low dollar amount I am required to report to my shift manager. There are obvious reasons why those policies are in place, one big one is to ensure I am not on the take in some way but several others as well.

I wonder if tipping directly to the dealer without having to share would help improve the attitude of some of the other dealers.
