It's a rant about how his feelings were hurt when someone called him a thief for stealing bananas and coffee. I feel like he's sunk to a new low with this one.

Yeah basically, and a new low for him seems like it would be hard to find. He wrote an entire column trying to justify his stealing breakfast from his motel by comparing it to people cheating on their taxes by not claiming all their gambling winnings.

The funny thing is, based on other columns of his I've read, Bob Dancer comes across as exactly the type of sock-sniffer who would steal breakfast from a motel in the first place. The fact that he did it isn't really a big surprise.

Here's the link to the column, which hasn't been posted in this thread yet: http://www.lasvegasadvisor.com/bob_dancer/2013/1210.cfm

Yeah, IMO that's crossing the line. I'm not a big VP player, and therefore I don't follow Dancer much, but the parallels he attempts to draw in his example aren't accurate.

If a hotel charges an extra $10 for breakfast, and you know that, but choose to forego paying the fee, and still take breakfast (whether it was a banana and coffee or a three plate feast is irrelevant) it's stealing. You can rationalize it away if you want, but it's pretty unethical. Furthermore, to first brag about it, and then later vehemently defend it makes it even worse.

His parallels are so off ("stealing" shampoo from hotels isn't the same thing, those are complimentary and included in your room rate), it's not even funny. This is where someone being frugal crosses the line to being cheap. I can appreciate frugality, although I'm fortunate enough to be financially well off that I'm not worried about going out of my way to save $2, but to be proud of intentionally avoiding paying for a service or product that you are knowingly using is pretty pathetic.

It's funny that he also points out that someone wrote him to thank him for this new "advantage play". :rolleyes2:

If people like Dancer spent half as much time and effort trying to obtain more wealth as they do trying to figure out ways to save a dollar or two, they'd be better off.

Again I have nothing against frugality, but intentionally not paying a fee for a service or product you intend to use anyways is not frugality. Perhaps his next article could be entitled "How to save $2.00 by asking for a water cup at Chipotle but filling it with soda instead". Followed by "Sharing a Plate: how to always eat 2 for 1 at an All-you-can eat buffet"

Just read his post - WOW!

Did he really read that himself before posting?

He outright stole. No two ways around it. And, because of people like him, they will soon charge one rate (the higher one) to everyone because they are tired of people stealing food.

Comparing this to anything else is downright illogical and wrong.

BUT - I have to comment on the freeplay or $1,000 discussion. Freeplay has no value and is therefore not taxable. Plain and simple. If you do win some money from those free pulls on the slot machine, that money is taxable of course.

    What an idiot!

Yeah and let's be intellectually honest here, people don't like W-2Gs because they make doing your taxes a pain in the ass and can potentially open you up to an audit which is also a pain. The majority of the time, people have enough gambling losses to offset any gains and the wins are therefore not taxable anyways.

I also laughed at the FP comment. $1,000 cash I can do anything with. I could buy something, put it in the bank, go out to a bunch of dinners, or I could gamble it. $1000 in FP I can do nothing but gamble it, it's not cash. It's not the same thing.

    From his article:

Says the guy who devoted an entire article defending himself for stealing "a cup of coffee and a banana".

    Pot, meet Kettle.

    Right on!

    Exactly!

I am thinking Mr Dancer should run for office (not going to pick a party - doesn't matter - and no politics here, right?)

Yeah, its not really an "advantage play" when the options are "room with no breakfast" or "room with breakfast" and you pick the room with no breakfast price but then go in and eat the breakfast anyway... it would be like if I went to the bookstore and found two books I want but going up to the cashier I only pay for one but tuck the other in my jacket.

It would be an "advantage play" if they had one room rate and offered the breakfast to all guests and then he said "Instead of going to the coffee shop and shelling out $20 for breakfast for both of us we went to the free continental breakfast"

It was kind of shameless for him to publish this (esp since I'm sure he could afford the extra $10)
But I did think he had a point about people taking advantage of the VIP lounges. Tropicana Laughlin used to have a refrigerator with water and coffee and maybe a few treats in their lounge. We saw people going to the refrigerator with grocery bags and carrying the bottled water out. Pretty sure they weren't VIPs. I think that benefit is gone now.

I'd make a joke about him not tipping at restaurants as another example of his 'advantage play,' but considering this (which is pretty much outright theft) I'm pretty sure he does that already.

Why not take everything from the minibar, it's in the room you paid for??

The GN offers this for $25 for the entire stay. Easy check-in and check-out, free water, juice and some food treats too. Not a bad deal, especially knowing that no matter how bad of a flight you have into LV at least the check-in will be painless. Stopped in every day a couple of times to grab a couple of bottles of water. Thankfully I never came across anyone emptying out the refrigerator ....:peace::beer:

that preferential check-in would be a nice benefit esp if you fly in and have your luggage. We drive from CA so even tho we always get disappointed if we can't check in when we arrive, at least we have our stuff in the car so we don't have worry about having someone hold it for us.
