AP article for your reading pleasure... http://www.wistv.com/story/24129679/las-vegas-mall-modeled-on-istanbuls-grand-bazaar

A spice market, really??? Butcher shop? Would people really grocery shop on the strip?

"...rolled out on the Strip this year include an Eastern European glass factory-themed theater and a China-themed casino, which is expected to include a replica of the Great Wall of China and house live pandas"

Has anyone heard about either of these and if so, where they are located?

The old Stardust site will house the Asian themed casino. No idea on the glass.

too bad they are going to clog up one more block on the strip. Glad they waited until I got smart and discovered downtown and the off-strip joints.

There are hotel rooms with kitchens in them on The Strip, plus condos and timeshares. Could also be they want to draw in some locals, either making it part of their day out or coming off work at one of the other casinos.

I'm looking forward to the changes. That dated area in front of Bally's badly needed to do something different.

I would like to know what is going to happen to the street people who jump around and bend their arms behind their heads or the well dressed goon who solicits limo rides to a local strip joint? I hope they set aside an area for the bums who use to panhandle right before the moving sidewalk, it just will not be the same without these Vegas landmarks!

Interesting part to me is the China themed property with Pandas, if they are referring to Giant Pandas. I could be wrong, but I seem to remember that every Giant Panda in the world "belongs" to the Chinese government, which leases them out, at great expense, to zoos. I wonder if the Chinese government would be interested in leasing a highly prized, highly endangered animal like that to a casino in Las Vegas and if the casino company could afford it.

Bally's will probably have Security keep things in line. The homeless and others could still hang out on the public walk area on The Strip but would not be able to enter Bally's Bazaar unless Bally's allows it.

If you go to Container Park, Security is not allowing the homeless in, panhandlers, or people with drinks in their hands. And, sales reps are excluded too. When it's private property, the owners can be as tight as they want to be on this issue.

    Bally's Grand Bazaar construction status?

I just switched my upcoming trip from Paris to Bally's. (Both are comped, but I like the location of Bally's just a little bit more--it's 10 minutes closer to Ellis Island, for one thing.)

Now I read that they have broken ground on the Grand Bazaar in front of Bally's. I'm skeptical, to say the least--the plans look pretty tacky.

My question is, for those who are there: how much of an impact is the construction having in this early stage? Is there a lot of equipment? Noise? Congestion? Or is it still pretty minimal? I was hoping to tip at the front desk for an upgrade to the new Jubilee tower, which I would guess would bear the brunt of the construction noise.

    Thanks!

I would like to hear more about the Glass Factory Theatre. I'm still trying to get my mind around the value of theming a theatre that way. I could see Italian or Greek architecture having a tie in, but will an unusual glass factory theme make a big difference? There must be more to it, unless they think people will come just because of the uniqueness.

I really haven't looked at the plans for this in detail but I am thinking if they are going to totally redo the front, including the foundation, the early stages of this project is probably going to see a lot of jackhammers and heavy equipment ripping up the concrete and everything out front there...

I stayed at Bally's a couple of weeks ago. Bally's redid the Food Court and it looked great, however, walking to/from the FC back to the casino is and for many years a disaster. There are a few retail stores/kiosks, but for the whole week i was there as well as in years past, is like a barren wasteland.
There are many people coming and going from the eateries, Sports Book, pool, Monorail, etc, but Bally's needs to utilize the space in between to be more user friendly.
I would hope part of the 50 million can be used there as well as the never working escalators/moving walkways at Bally's that haven't worked consistently since 1982.

It's the Chelsea, at Cosmopolitan. The "theme" is something their marketing department is making a big deal out of, but the draw is going to be Bruno Mars, not the design scheme.

I've always liked Bally's entrance. I guess I understand why they would want to make use of that space. I was chastised in another thread last month for always being too negative about the increase in retail on the strip so I'll say no more :)

I can't say I am too enthralled by what they are going to do with the space.
Granted it was not well utilized from a business standpoint. The ducks were the only ones that probably enjoyed the space. The homeless and throngs of street performers were taking over the space in front and in garden area.

Looking at the design, it appears it will be a big POS. I can't imagine the retailers they are going to attract will be a draw to the casino unless they get some boutique style or hip independents. I suspect this space will become what Hawaiian Marketplace is and what old Carnival court area was,
throngs of people trying to get thru a confined space while annoying retailers and hawkers get in your face to make a sale.

I would have much rather seen this turned into a nice mixed use area, with a strip front dinning area and some mixed shopping with some green space.

Looking at the design it will be original by strip standards, but I don't see it as hook for the customer base Bally's has typically marketed to. Not sure if this is another step in which Bally's is trying to re-invent themselves.

I think its a fine idea. way better than the dinosaur skeleton looking thing they have there now.

Once they get the structure there they can always change the theme of it if its not doing well.

The Review Journal has pictures of Artist’s renderings and a more information on the bazaar.

    http://www.reviewjournal.com/business/grand-bazaar-shops-planned-entrance-ballys-las-vegas

"A movable walkway that transports Bally’s patrons to and from the Strip casino will be removed and replaced by more than 150 retail offerings, dining choices and bars. The outdoor setting will resemble the world’s classic bazaars and markets, with colorful mosaic-patterned rooftops that look like tents."

Good riddance to the movable walkway which was broken most of the time.

I think the shops will do well due to the volume of foot traffic in that area. I agree with other comments that this won't drive business into the casino.

I dread another strip construction project and the pedestrian bottlenecks that are sure to come. :grrr:

Thanks for the link. I think it looks ugly as hell.

Those moving walkways NEVER seem to be operational. Agreed that a construction bottleneck on that corner won't be good, especially with the construction going on across the street.

If they want more traffic inside the casino they should just extend the casino out closer to the street IMHO.

I think the concept is probably more like places like Eataly and other "high end" food bazaars. Where you can buy ready to eat cuts of cured meats, cheeses, etc. with wine. All eaten right there. Not like your traditional neighborhood buther shop.

I think its a good idea, there isn't really any of that kind of immerssive retail experience on the strip right now and those types of bazaars are extremely popular in other major cities.

I agree though that the colorful facade from above is pretty ugly, at least in those artist's renditions.

Maybe I've just been lucky, but I've rarely found the Bally's casino to be a complete dead zone. It's generally had a pretty happy, lively, busy vibe--a relaxed and welcoming place for non-hipsters to hang out.

Aside from the moving walkways, I don't think it was broken, so I don't know why they are trying to fix it. (And I know that the answer is, "to make more money." But is that really going to happen?)

I have to agree. I stayed at Rio in October and one of their shuttles goes to/from Bally's so I was in there quite a bit and it was always pretty crowded, especially for weekdays/nights.
