I am planning on moving to Las Vegas at the end of January, or early February.

I have been attempting to research places to live online, but it seems that every review I see is either complaining about roaches, crime, or is clearly written by management trying to make it seem like a nice place.

I will be moving by myself, so I would be looking to rent a room from someone, a studio, or 1 bedroom apartment. I will have a car so although I would prefer to live close to the strip, safety is more important to me. I also like golfing so being near an inexpensive golf course would be nice too.

I will be in town to look at places in early December so any help I can get so I know what to look for will be great.

I like the NW, Summerlin and S. Summerlin, and there are others that like Henderson just as much. Southern Highlands, Mountain's Edge and Anthem are also very nice. I looked at all these areas before buying in the NW. These communities are either family orientated or well to do or both and new and clean for the most part. If you stay to the south of the 215 or west of Rainbow Blvd you are good(further west to the mountains the better). There are countless condo communities where there are plenty of affordable rentals. There are also some nice neighborhoods closer to the strip, but someone else will have to chime in.

If all utilities and cable/internet are included I can afford around 800 a month, or else less depending on what needs to be paid for still.

Meridian suites are nice, but I'm not sure what utilities are included.

I plan on checking it out and possibly staying my first month there, but I have heard that the area is not safe at night

Those are real nice but more than I can afford

Well, unfortunately that's Vegas. Lot's of "good" areas turn sketchy at night. Anything near the strip will be that way.

My advice is to avoid the extended stay type hotels and cheap apartment complexes especially the ones near the strip.

It's going to be tough finding a place with all you want on your budget. Check the Las Vegas Craig's list classifieds and look into roommate options in a nicer house in a good area.

I lived in Spring Valley for ten years before moving to the Silverado Ranch area. Both are far less expensive than the most desirable areas like Green Valley, Anthem and Summerlin. Both are nice areas and generally "safe". Break-ins and petty crimes are pretty common and no part of Valley is void of them.

My brother has lived behind the Palms for a year and just resigned a 14 mo lease. Sure there are less desirable areas near the strip, but not all are bad.

I've personally never had a problem. My brother did have his scooter stolen when he left it unlocked one night. Friends have had their homes broken into in Southern Highlands and near Flamingo/Jones in broad daylight. My husband's co-worker had her car stolen from her garage in gated community in Red Rock Country Club. It goes to show you run a risk anywhere.

Best advice is use http://www.crimemapping.com/map/nv/lasvegas and search any address you are considering. You'll quickly notice if crime trends in one area over another.

Oh, and even the nicest golf courses run good deals for locals. So, no sweat there.

Thanks for the link, the crime numbers are staggering but like you said there is risk everywhere. I have lived just outside Chicago my entire life and have never been a victim of a crime to this point so hopefully that trend will continue.

Ok I''m not a local really, we bought a condo two years ago near 215 and Rainbow and stay in it a few weeks a year. 89113 area code, when I showed the condo to my Nephew who has worked for Metro for 20 years he was impressed by the area and safety. He even said he would allow his daughter to live there. Rent for a 1 bed is about $650 2 bed approx $750. Minimum 6 month lease. Gated community with roving guard at night and on site management. Takes about 15 minutes to get to a casino on the strip, 215 makes it easy to get anywhere except NE Vegas. Only drawback is the bus service is minimal. I love this area, everything is a short drive away for shopping and dining. I can't wait to get back.

We lived in the 89131 zip. Nice area, always felt safe, but it was a drive to downtown and so even further to the Strip.

But really, once you are living there, you'll forget all about going to the Strip. The only reason to go there is to take visitors. At least that was our experience.

The closer to the strip the older the apartment building for the same price. Southwest area sounds best for you. I would give up the whole renting a room from somebody idea. In Vegas you could wind up living with anything from Saint to serial killer and you wouldn't be able to tell one from the other until it was too late.

Rancho del so? He really likes it there uh? how much can one expect to pay on top of rent?

Can you post some recommendations for apartments?

OP, im in the same boat. Im budget is around the same, im looking for a 2br since I need an office. Whenever I find something that looks good, all the reviews are bad, pointing to crime and bugs. Its a never ending circle. I wish I knew someone local!!

Yes, mostly casino employees as neighbors. only complaint is no w/d in unit. Pay on top of rent? For utilities? Gas and water is included. A friend lives nearby at Camden Cove. He's been there a few years, again mostly casino employees as residents.

Southwest and Silverado Ranch areas run about the same, 2 beds start about $850. Less for no w/d. More for extra bath, garage, etc. Don't rule out Condo rentals. Bella Vita on Decatur/Flamingo would be in your price range.
