Hotel changes

How many times would you change hotels on one trip?

 

Preferably never.

 

Changing hotels mid-trip is not for us. We did that one time and did not like anything about it. It wastes time ~ packing, checking out, getting to new hotel, checking in, unpacking ~ whew!. Once I'm settled in, I'm not moving.

I’ve done it a few times because of travel problems: one time there was a freak April snow storm on the East Coast and once the plane had mechanical issues and was delayed all day. Since I had already packed and gone to the airport, going to a different hotel would have been no more hassle than going back to the same one.

Of course, my trips are never more than three or four nights. I suppose if I were to stay longer than a week, I might consider it.

 

No more than 3 times in a 8-9 night trip, it is not too much bother for me, as I travel pretty light. I would only change because of comp nights or if it were crazy expensive on a weekend. Normally stay in 2 places over my 8 or 9 night trips.

 

I like chunks of 3-4 night stays within my usual multiple changes per trip. My trips are usually 10+ days. However, I have done back-to-back-to-back one-night changes. I would change as many times as makes sense for me for a particular trip.

I am all about frugality. But I change hotels for more than just piecing together comps and stringing nice rates/deals together, though this is indeed the height of the fun of it.

I like to experience new rooms and multiple changes per trip satisfies that curiosity. I have been known to switch rooms in the same hotel for the next night just to see a different room. By trying new places, I find which places I love and desire to stick to.


A hotel change gives me a new scenery, which I found makes me feel like I am on a brand new vacation within my vacation (the same is true when I make side trips from Vegas). I spent 11 nights once at a hotel and before the 11 nights were up, I left for a new hotel because it became mundane. Changing hotels quickly revived me.

But back to the cost savings side: I also get increased value when I plan well. With due diligence, I can get the opportunity to pay the price of a 2 star Vegas hotel for a 4 star Vegas hotel. Or, critically low rates off-set higher prices.

For the logistics of it: Sometimes I forget to check out and they automatically check me out, so no big deal there. I usually don't unpack, so I do not have that experience. Check in can be a monster though with long lines and the hotels who decide you must check in at 4pm (and so you have to wait until that time). But I weigh the benefits far over these issues, particularly because my trips are long and I can afford leisurely time.

 

I did an 11 night trip last year and stayed at 4 different hotels.

It's pretty common for me to do 2 hotels on a 5-7 day trip.

Comped rooms are one of the reasons. Getting someplace cheaper for the weekend is another reason.

I also just like trying new places.

 

Zero. It isn't worth the hassle and we only stay 2-3 nights/trip anyway.

Zero. One check in is enough. One of the worst parts of the trip is the check in line and process.

 

We normally only stay in one place per trip, but one time we wanted to hotel hop around a little. We were there for 10 days and stayed in 4 hotels..

1 nite at Sunset Station
3 nites at TI
3 nites at Mandalay Bay
2 nites at South Point

We wer originally scheduled for only 9 nights, but I got an extra day off from work so we added Sunset Station in...

We just wanted to stay at a "Locals place", a Mid Tier Place, and a Higher Teir place. We used to say we wanted to stay at all the hotels on the Strip, but we have grown weary of the gaming conditions and DB types on the Strip, so we stay at Orleans now and hit DT while we are in town....

I don't mind changing once but wouldn't do more than that.

 

I think 2 is about the max for me. I did stay at 3 hotels one trip and was fine with that.

In the end I like the how changing hotels breaks up the trip a bit.

 

The answers are mixed, and many are missing the rationale.

If you are only 1 night, then of course you do not change.
If 2 nights, pretty rare there would be a reason.

Once you hit 4+ nights, there are some decent reasons. Mainly, comp room situation.

Of those that said NO WAY, how many were less than 5 nights?

 

Zero. We are one and done people. I like having a home base to return to every night. If I want to try somewhere new, I just book another trip.

 

We will usually switch hotels once during a trip, staying for three nights at a center strip location and then three nights at a south strip location.

The most we've done is three hotels in one trip (2 nights at Harrah's, 2 at Golden Nugget, 3 at Monte Carlo and then 3 nights at Harrah's, 1 at Fremont and then 3 at Aria) and we've never really had a problem with long waits to check in.

We like switching hotels because it gives us a chance to gamble around where when we do three nights at Harrah's we will do all our play there and at the surrounding casinos and then when we move to Aria or Monte Carlo do three nights there and the casinos around that.

But like others we don't like having to unpack and then repack stuff so what we do is bring two bags along where one is the bag for the first part of the stay and that will also have our toiletries and such, and then when that leg is done everything gets put back in that bag and thats it, the second bag has all the clothes and such we need for the second stay.

Personally, I find that the switching of hotels makes it feel like the trip is lasting longer and with the hotel switch it almost feels like the start of a fresh new vacation within a vacation...

 

Usually no but for longer trips yes. We had a 7 or 8 night trip over the summer and switched hotels midway through. I had higher tier cards at both casinos so there was no wait to check-in. It was nice, sort of like starting a new vacation.

The only pain was packing, but I don't unpack a whole lot in the first place. My girlfriend is a different story, her shit was all over the place. But we had a car so didn't really need to pack all that properly anyway. Plus we used the time between checking out of one place and checking into the next to go out to the outlets to do some shopping and stuff. It worked out well.

 

I've done it once - it was because the Fremont only offered me 2 comped nights. I asked if they would add a 3rd and they said I could ask a host when I checked out.
I told them that I would just use a Golden Gate offer instead (fully expecting them to cave when I mentioned it). They didn't bat an eye. Girl just said, "I understand".
So, after two nights at Fremont, I checked out early-AM and made the very-easy stroll to Golden Gate...they had a room available, so I was able to check in.
The changing-of-hotels only took me an extra 15 minutes total time.
So, if I ever find myself in the same situation (downtown), I'll do it again.
