I have a friend who is planning her 1st trip to Vegas, and she wants to stay on the strip, but she's on a tight budget, so she wants to keep it as cheap as possible. Where do you guys recommend?

depends. You want a casino hotel or just a place to sleep?

Literally in the middle of the strip they have a travelodge. Thats is probably one of the cheapest rooms you can get. Also, check out the older hotels (circus circus, flamingo, excalibur, the quad etc.). They are usually cheaper than the new ones. Also try to find promos, can save a lot of money. You will easily find 30-40 $ a night on the strip!

EDIT: I see you have been to vegas a few times! Shouldn't you be able to answer your friends question? (no offense, just wondering)

The cheapest, decent property I have found is the Motel 6 on Tropicana.

Technically it is not on the strip, but it is half a block away, and is right across from the MGM parking lot. Less than a 5 minute walk and you are in the MGM lobby.

If good location and lower price are what your friend is looking for, I would start by checking out Flamingo and Bally's. If those are still a bit pricey, try Harrah's or the Quad. These four are the probably the cheapest (major) hotels that are mid-strip.

EDIT: Since this is your friend's first trip, I would strongly recommend one of the big casino/hotels over something like a travelodge or motel 6, in order to get the true Vegas experience.

Depends when they want to go
If it's their first time then I'd say Flamingo due to the location
If they don't really care about location and more about price I'd say Riviera or Excalibur

It may be the cheapest but I would never ever recommend a first timer to stay at a Motel 6 in Vegas.

She needs to be careful about dates. Rooms at some places can range from $80 a night to $500+. Most of the strip hotels have calendars for the month.

First time visitor - STRIP ONLY!

Low end of price; Quad, Ballys, Harrahs with CET
    Excaliber, Luxor with MGM
Tropicana has some deals from time to time

1.) Sign up for a CET card
2.) Check out rates on the calendar, you can usually score like $30 per night at Quad/Harrahs/Bally

For cheap eats, there's a LOT of new sign-up promos which will net you $$ (via suckout on video poker) then you can use that to eat on..
For an ABSOLUTE FIRST TIME visitor, Vegas can be VERY cheap and VERY exciting.

Excalibur is a good choice, even with the resort fee, it is one of the cheapest. Definitely she has to use the calendar.
Something important: tell her to stay away from the Ewxcalibur buffet. It is the worst on the Strip.

Cheapest hotel in a good spot should be The Quad, followed by Excalibur. I'd be ok with recommending Excalibur to someone, it's not glamorous, but it's clean enough, and decent, there is stuff to do, close to other hotels. I think you'd still get a good Vegas experience there. I'm being realistic here, no Motel 6, nothing shady.

Dates are 100% the most important, rates fluctuate a TON. The cheapest months in general seems to November, December and the first part of January. Also right before or after a major holiday. Think the day after Labor Day, Memorial Day.. You can get some REALLY good deals if you pick the right dates.

You can see the Quad for $15 a night plus resort fee, and Excalibur I've seen for $20 plus resort fee. I've stayed at Flamingo for $20... you just gotta make sure you do a little research before you book.

I would suggest also looking at Southwest at their vacation packages. Have booked 3 times this way to Vegas after scouring the net and trying to find the best combo on flight/hotel.

Yes correct!! Jetblue does too. I know lots of people that have booked that way and have saved. (yea obviously if you have a lot of deals and things from gambling it's different, but just a regular tourist, it's usually a good deal) They've been having good flight deals to Vegas in general, I got my flight for next month from the small LA airport for $96 roundtrip.

Just spent 4 nites at The Quad and I'm kinda embarrassed to admit that. room 313....peeling wall paper, dirty worn furniture, carpet looked like it had been in a dumpster for a while, musty odor, elevators dirty. They should be paying us to stay there. I asked for upgrade or a change and they said they were full. If I'd had the money I'd have been out of there. Casino was remodeled and fine. Granted it's a good location but have your friend stay somewhere else or she will be disappointed with a part of her first Vegas experience.

To Re-iterate, Bally's, Harrah's, Flamingo. The Quad is will be very crappy until they remodel rooms. There are some places south strip as well, Tropicana, Luxor, Excalibur. Try pricing the CET places online at totalrewards.com. Usually very reasonable during the week and on weekends not so bad.
