Got back late Sat after a whirlwind three night trip at Ballys. Hubbie, son and daughter related a story told to them at a blackjack table Friday. Apparently, an underage patron, age 19, was with his father playing blackjack. Played through three dealer changes, never carded once, which was odd, because my 25 year old daughter got carded every ten feet just walking thru any casino. Anyway, no one caught on until he went to cash out his chips at the cashier and was finally carded. He obviously lost his winnings, which were substantial. The gaming board was called in, and Ballys was fined half million dollars and was told the next time it would be a million. I am just repeating what a dealer told my group

Moral of the story? I guess don't get so cocky that no one cards you at the tables, and try to cash in chips being underage. He should have just given his chips to his dad to cash in. Just kidding, who brings their underage son to vegas and gambles with them?

I'm 25, and I've been carded cashing in chips at Ballys as well (this is the ONLY casino I've ever been carded at the cage for).

I think I actually got a little snippy with the lady when she asked for my ID. I'm fine with being carded at the table, but at the cage it just feels like one more way for them to prevent you from getting your money.

Two years ago when I was 26 I got carded maybe once the entire trip. In September I got carded at least three times a day. Things are changing.

I dont doubt you were told that story but I do doubt the story itself. If the underage gambler was with his father either the father is the stupidest person in the world or the Kid is just as dumb. Give the chips to Dad to cash out.

Ballys in NJ has been fined couple of times for

Underage gambling but for amounts far less than a half million and nothing shows up on google for Vegas so I highly doubt the story also

It really depends on how old you look...I was in vegas for my 21st and barely got carded...my 30 year old sister however was carded all the time.

I have never been carded at the cage...or by a CW.

I fear you underestimate just how stupid the world is. With my bleak view on how intelligent the general public is I'd call that guy average. :wink2:

Not that I'm defending him. He's a total freaking moron and is infuriates me just how many more there are.

I only remember being carded in Las Vegas once, when I was about 27 at the old Silver Slipper.

However, I do know that the local casinos occasionally catch underage people sneaking in and when it happens the casino gets fined and the guard who let him/her in usually gets suspended. At the local casinos they usually card anyone who looks like they may be under 30 and still a few sneak in.

An interesting anecdote ... A few years ago I was at the local Ameristar and I saw what appeared to be about a 12 year old girl playing a sit-down slant-top slot. I kind of flagged down a security guard and said "this is probably none of my business but I think you have somebody underage playing a slot" and such. He said "If that's the person I'm thinking of, we've checked her out thoroughly and she is of age." so looks are not always accurate.

    Oh well ... :)

you can gamble at 18 or 19 in a lot of states at the indian casinos. maybe they were used to that and didnt realize it was 21 in vegas. im not defending them but if your used to your casinos allowing 18 you might think its the same everywhere and not check.

You got snippy when they carded you at the cage? Really?

Did you get snippy at the Detroit airport where you had to show that same I.D. twice before boarding the plane as well as force you to take off your shoes, belt, and empty your pockets?

Or did you just yuk it up with your friends as you anticipated a fun trip to Vegas?

I've noticed that the worst of the casino personnel are generaly a lot more courteous than your typical TSA agent.

And I've never had a casino conficstate my pocket knife, nail clippers, bottle of water, or cigarette lighter.

(Then again, I've never been in that scene from "Casino" that featured the Skill saw and ball-peen hammer, either.)

I live near Pechanga, Pala, Pauma, Harrahs, Valley View and only one is 18 and up and many people assume that since they know one is 18 and up, others are too. I used to get carded in Vegas my first trip, not anymore, and I am told I look younger than my age of 26, so who knows..

    Yes, really.

Why are you comparing a casino cashier to a TSA agent? The analogy doesn't work.

I consistently got carded well into my 30s at anyplace that had a 21 age requirement. I was always getting pegged in my late teens. Even has a state trooper question my DL. Then the grey hairs started showing up and put a stop to the carding. I was in my late 40s before I visited my first casino, but I suspect they would have carded me, too.

In vegas, there is no clear place for id checks. Its everyones responsibility to check. When I went to vegas at 21 I was asked for id at both the table and cage about 9 times in three days. Im 33 now and last trip I was carded along with my 29 yr old gf at outback ffs when ordering water w our meal because its apparently illegal to sit at a bar underage even when ordering water to drink. And last week my anal local casino asked for my birthday, middle name, and address while they stared at my id. Pretty ridiculous but they have obv got busted hard in the past.

I'm 30 and carded about 25% of the time at the tables. Couple weeks ago saw a kid throw $1000 on the table and told his female friend he was going to show her how to win.

Got carded and dealer threw the card right back at him without looking. Why? I guess in CA if you are under 21, you get a vertical card vs horizontal for over 21. He goes to the CA Indian casinos which is 18 min age. Looks like he made the 4 hour drive for nothing!

Dealer informed the pit boss who then made a call upstairs and they watched him as he lingered around. Security showed up a minute later and they were escorted off the casino floor.

Depending on the casino, the cage will ask you where you were playing sometimes when you are cashing in a nice stack of chips. I always say, "I was playing here, that's why the chips have your casino name printed on them". LOL. Then I tell them what pit and they call over to make sure you are legit I guess.

I was just in Vegas in September on a solo trip. I am 32 and while I may not look 32, I definitely look 21. I was sitting at a slot machine when two young guys pulled up the seat next to me and ordered drinks. The waitress carded them and me (even though we both said I was not with them nor was I ordering a drink). She said that they have been cracking down and that everyone is on high alert - that if I wasn't of age and was sitting there and she hadn't asked, it would be her job on the line. I noticed that I was carded considerably more times in September than I have ever been in Vegas. So maybe things are changing.

Never had to show my ID when cashing out and personally Id be more than a little annoyed if they asked. Whats next, putting my ID in the TITO machine to get my money back? I have no problem being carded walking in or at the tables. Carding at the cash out is pretty shady imo.

    THIS.

I agree. That's why I got snippy with the lady at Ballys when she asked for ID. It just seems like a way to prevent you from actually cashing out. I'm 25, and no one in their right mind would think that I look 21 or under, but had I not had my ID on me, would that really have justified them not giving me my money?

Carding at the tables is absolutely necessary to prevent underage people from gambling. Carding at the cage is a waste of time: it won't prevent anyone underage from gambling and it'll piss off everyone else.

If the OP's story is correct, Ballys would have better off just letting the kid cash out the chips without carding him. They never would have known they just let a 19 year old gamble and would have saved half a million in fines.
